UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERWIN MAURER, OF JAMAICA, NEW YORK.
BROODER.
Application filed June 12, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ERWIN MAURER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jamaica, Long Island, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have 1nvented certain new and useful Improvements in Brooders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to brooders, and has for its object to produce a more even temperature throughout the inclosure for the chicks.
Another object is to economize fuel, that is to say, provide a brooder which may be maintained at the desired temperature with the use of a minimum quantity of fuel for producing the heat.
Other objects are to simplify the construction of the brooder and to lower the cost of its manufacture.
The invention will befirst hereinafter described in connection with the accompanying drawings-which constitute a part of this specification, and then more specifically defined in the claims at the end of the description.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters are used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views :-F igure 1 is a central vertical section through a brooder constructed substantially in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a view part plan and part horizontal section, and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary horizontal section through the inner end portion of the heat outlet pipe and adjacent parts of the brooder.
The outer casing 1 of the brooder is preferably cylindrical in form and is provided with a closed top 2 in which a suitable ventilator 3 is placed, while its bottom is open and supported or raised upon legs 4. A curtain 5 depends from the lower edge of the casing 1 for inclosing a space for the chicks, as usual. Within the casing 1 and spaced equidistant from its walls is a closed drum 6 which is supported from the top 2 of the outer casing by rivets 7 or other suitable hangers. A heat inlet pipe 8 leads from a source of heat generation (not shown) into the lower portion of the drum 6, while a heat outlet pipe 9 leads from the upper portion of said drum 6 to the outside of the casing 1. Another drum 10 is arranged inside the drum 6, being hung or supported in position so as to leave a narrow space be- Specification of Letters Patent.

tween the drums by means of hangers or rivets 11. It will be noted that the heat inlet and outlet pipes 8 and 9 are on the same side of the brooder. In order-to prevent the heated air entering through the pipe 8 from passing directly out again'through the pipe 9 without circulating around the inner drum 10, a flange or strip 12 is placed horizontally between the two drums about half Way between said pipes 8 and 9. This flange 12 is provided with perforations 13 of restricted area to permit the heated gas to pass into the upper portion of the space between the drums after it has thoroughly circulated in the lower portion of said space. -There are preferably none of the perforations 13 in the portion of the flange arran ed immediately between the inlet and out et pipes, so as to make the circulation more complete and the heating of the drum 6, which radiates heat to the chicks below, more uniform.
To further aid the circulation of the heated air entering through the pipe 8, said pipe has its inner end flared, as at 14, Fig. 2, and a V-shaped projection or spreader 15 is arranged on the inner drum 10 opposite said flared inner end of the pipe 8. By means of this construction, the heated air is divided into two currents which are guided around opposite sides of the inner drum. The inner end of the outlet pipe 9 may also be flared, as at 16, Fig. 3, for facilitating the escape of the air from the upper portion of the space between the drums, but in this case no spreader is necessary.
It will be observed that the inner drum takes up most of the space within the outer drum and thus serves to greatly reduce the space for the circulation of the heated air, so that the outer drum may be kept at the desired t perature with less consumption of fuel. fflhe inner drum 10 should have a few per orations 17, preferably in its bottom as shown, for counteracting the expansion of the air in said drum under the action of the heated air around it. Were it not for these perforations 17, the expansion and contraction of the air confined in the inner drum would cause a knocking and banging noise which would frighten the little chicks.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A brooder comprising a casing, a heating drum in said casing, means to supply heated air to the bottom portion of said drum, air outlet means communicating with the top portion of the drum, filling means occupying the middle portion of the heating drum and having side walls arranged near to the corresponding walls of said drum leaving only a narrow circulating space in the drum around the filling means, and a perforated plate extending across'this space from the side wallsof the filling means to the corresponding walls of the' heating drum, the perforations in said' plat'e being of restricted area and arranged at intervals around the greater part oftn'e filling means,
the portion of said plate between air inlet and outlet being imperforate.
2. A brooder comprising a casing, a drum therein, another drum occupying the cen tral portion of the space Within the first drum and leaving only a narrow space around it and Within the outer drum, and means for circulating heated air through said space,'saidinner drumhaving a few perforations therein for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to "this specification.
