UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BOBERSON ARNOLD, OF SUFFOLK, VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, WILLIAM B. WELLONS, AND EXUM B. BRITT, OF SAME,PLAOE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BEE-HIVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,894, dated September 12, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Beitknown that I, RoBEEsoN ARNOLD, of Suffolk, in the county of Nansemond an d in the State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bee-Hives; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a bee-hive with a passage clear through, underneath the brood-chamber, for the miller, so as to prevent the same from entering the brood-chamber.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referringto the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section, and Fig. 2 is a front elevation of a bee-hive with my improvement.
I do not claim any novelty in the construction of the main portion of the hive, and therefore deem it not necessary to describe the same.
A is the broodchamber, provided with a false bottom, B, a suitable distance above the base or main-bottom C of the hive. ais the entrance on the front side of the hive, made high enough so as to allow the bees to pass in and out above the bottom B, the front edge of which, at the entrance, is beveled, as shown in Fig. l. The sides of the space between the bottoms C and B are filled up so as to form a passage, b, under the bottom B, clear through the hive, of the same width as the entrance c. The miller in trying to ef feet an entrance into the hive will pass into this passage and there lay the eggs, which are easily removed by inserting a slide, D, from the rear side. This slide will then entirely clear this passage of anything deposited therein. At certain times of the year there is no necessity for having this passage open, when the slide may remain therein.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the brood-chamber A, of the false-bottom B with bevels m a: on its end, passage b, and slide D,'all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of December,
ROBERSON ARNOLD. Witnesses:
C. L. EvEET, J. E. HUTcHINsoN.
