To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, SETH DEMPSTER and CHESTER SKAccs, citizens of the United States, residing at Snohomish, in the county of Snohomish, State of Washington, have invented a new and useful Paint-Scraper, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to paint removing devices and more particularly to that type in which the paint burning and scraping instrumentalities are embodied in the same device.
An object of this invention is to provide a paint remover to which various scraping blades may be readily secured, and also having means for conveniently detaching the said scraping blades.
Another object of this invention is to provide a paint remover having an adjustable flame projecting mechanism, whereby the flame may be accurately projected to the scraping edge of the scraping blades, irrespective of the length of the said blade, and also permitting the operator to project the flame to any part of the material upon which he is Working, as he may determine is advantageous.
A further object of this invention is to provide a paint remover of generally improved construction, whereby the device will be simple, durable and inexpensive in construction, as well as convenient, practical, serviceable and ellicient in its use,
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, theinvention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention has been illustrated in its preferred embodiments in the accompanying drawings wherein a r Figure l is a side elevation of the. paint remover, partly in section. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through the generating chamber. Fig. 6 is a fragmental longitudinal sectional view taken through the valve casing and generating chamber. F ig. 7 is a detail perspectlve view of the generating chamber, controlling valve and priming cup, depicting the priming cup separated from the generating chamber. Fig. 8 is .a fragmental side elevation of the invention, showing a modified scraping blade.
In carrying out the present invention there is provided a fuel container or barrel 1, for the reception of gasolene, kerosene or any suitable fluid fuel, The rear end of the fuel container is provided with a wall or closure 2, which has an axial threaded aperture formed therein for the reception of a threaded sleeve 3, that supports a pressure pump 3. This pump 3, which is of ordinary construction, communicates with the interior of the fuel container in order that the fuel may be subjected to suficient air pressure to force the fuel from the container 1.
A closure is provided at the forward end of the container 1, and has a short pipe section or elbow 41: secured thereto, which communicates, with the interior of the container .1. That terminal of the elbow. t which is remote from the container 1 is pivotally or rotatably secured to an elbow 5, through the instrumentality of a flanged nipple 6 and a union nut 7, thus forming a tight swivel joint J, which allows the elbows 4: and 5 to move with respect to each other.
The upper end of the movable elbow 5 extends through an aperture 8 formed in a priming cup 9, and is then threadedly secured to a generating chamber 10. A sinuous or circuitous passage 11 is formed within the generating chamber 10, and communicates at one terminal with the movable elbow 5, while theremote terminal of the pas sage 11 communicates with the interior of a valve casing 12,. which is threadedly secured to a threaded boss 13, that extends from the generating chamber 10.
- The valve casing 12 is provided with a relatively long aperture 14, which communicates with the sinuous passage 11, through the instrumentality of a transverse aperture 15 and a relatively short aperture '16. A. needle valve 17 is threadedly secured within thevalve casing 12 and extends through the aperturelt, and is adapted to cooperate with a tapered valve seat 17, to thus effeet a closure for a relatively small port 18,

A scraper holder is provided which is in the form of a plate 22, having apertured ears 23 extending laterally therefrom, for the reception of the terminals of a. U-shaped strap or yoke 24 which extends over that end of the fuel container '1 which is adjacent the burner B. Nuts'or other suitable securing elements 25 are screwed upon the 7 terminals of'the yoke 24 and thus securely clampthe plate 22 to the fuel container 1.

Pressure is then applied to the interior of the container 1, by the instrumentality of the pressure pump 3. Now, the device is ready for use, and when the valve 17 is opened the fuel will flow through the elbow 4:, nipple 6, movable elbow 5, through the sinuous passage 11 formed in the generating chamber 10, then through the apertures 16, 15, 14 and port 18, thus finally through the nozzle 21 and into the priming cup 9 where it is ignited and, therefore, heats the generating chamber sufliciently to generate gas or vapor. It will be observed that the rear end of the priming cup 9 is entirely surrounded by a wall 39, so that if any of the fuel should fall between the nozzle 21 and port 18, it would be re tained in the rear end of the priming cup 9 and assist in heating the fuel. After the gas has been'generated, a flame is projected through the nozzle 21 and forward end of the priming cup 9, and since the entire burner is adjustable, owing to the swivel joint J, theref0re, the operator may direct the flame as he sees fit. I
When it is desired to remove or substitute a blade, the operator oscillates the cam 30 by the manipulating handle 32, thereby releasing the blade so that another may be readily attached.
Having thus described our invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A paint remover including a fuel container; a pressure pump communicating with said container; an adjustable burner; a scraper holder; a yoke adapted to rigidly secure the scraper holder to the fuel container; a scraper detachably secured to the said scraper holder; and a cam pivotally secured to the said scraper holder and adapted to detach the said scraper from the scraper holder. 1

A paint remover including a fuel container; a pressure pump; an adjustable burner; a plate having lateral ears formed at opposed sides thereof; a yoke embracing the fuel container and adapted to secure the said plate to the fuelcontainer; fingers ex tending from the said plate and adapted to engage the fuel container; a tapered portion extending from the said plate; inwardly projecting flanges formed on the said tapered portion; a scraper blade adapted to be received between the said inwardly proje'cting flanges; a cam pivotally secured to a the said plate and adapted to engage the said scraper blade to detach said scraper blade from the inwardly extending flanges; and a -manipulating handle extending from the said cam. v y

A paint remover including a fuel container; a'scraper holder; a scraper detachably secured to the said scraper holder; means for detaching the scraper from the said scraper holder; a generating chamber having a circuitous passage formed therein and communicating with the interior of the said fuel container; a valve casing secured to the generating chamber and having communicating apertures and a relatively small port formed therein which communicates with the said circuitous passage; a needle valve adapted to control the fiow of the fuel through the said port; a priming cup secured beneath the said generating chamber; a transverse partition formed in the said priming chamber; an aperture formed in the said partition; and a nozzle secured within the aperture and in alinement With the relatively small port.
4. A paint burner including a fuel container; a burner communicating with the said fuel container; a swivel joint interposed between the said burner and the fuel container; a scraper holder secured to the fuel container; a scraper; a tapered portion formed at the inner end of the said scraper and adapted to be detachably secured to the scraper holder; an upstanding arm extending from the said tapered portion; alongitudinal arm extending from the said upstanding arm, and having an aperture formed therein which is adapted to permit the flame to pass therethrough; and a downwardly extending arm projecting from the said longitudinal arm.
