To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHAnLns II. JULL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Riplay, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saws; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to saws, and particularly to butcher-saws, wherein the saw-blade is removably secured in a form which is provided with mechanism adapted to stretch the blade taut.
The object of my invention is to provide a saw with detachable tension mechanism which may be removed bodily from the saw-frame when it is desired to change the same, and also to secure the tension lever to said mechanism so that it will not fly out of the hand of the operative when removing the saw-blade from the frame; also to provide means to adjust the tension of the saw-blade when desired.
These and other features of my invention are hereinafter described and pointed out, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, is a side view of a saw embodying my invention. Fig. 2, is a like view of a portion of the same, partially in section, enlarged. Fig. 8, is a bottom view of a portion of the same. Fig. 4C, is a perspective view of the tension mechanism of my invention removed from the saw-frame. Fig. 5, is a side view of a portion of the saw-frame, and a portion of the handle in section thereon, after the tension mechanism is removed therefrom. Fig. 6, is a bottom view of the tension mechanism shown in Fig. i.
In these drawings A, indicates a metal sawframe, and A, indicates a handle which is provided with a slot A (see Fig. 2) into which the frame A, is inserted and secured by screws a, in the usual manner. A portion of the end of the frame A,.which is inserted into the slot A is cut away at B, and has a short slot or recess B, (see Figs. 2 and 5) which extends into, or is inclosed by the Specification of Letters Patent.

G11 one side of the recess B, I provide a shoulder or hook b, which tends to retain the removable tension mechanism hereinafter described, from accidentally falling out of the recess or pocket B, when a saw is being removed from or being placed in the frame. Into this recess or pocket B, I insert a bar G, which is of substantially the same thickness as the metal of the frame A, and is provided with a rounded end C, which acts as a bearingfor said bar to pivot upon, as hereinafter described.
The bar G, is provided with an under-cut shoulder a, which removably engages the shoulder or hook b, in the recess B, and is thereby prevented from accidentally falling out of the recess B. When it is desired to remove the bar C, from the pocket B, there is sufficient clearance between the rounded end C, of the bar C, and the wall of the recess B, to permit the bar C, being unhoolred from the shoulder Z), when the bar C, is swung sufficiently away from the frame A. The bar C, is also provided with an adjusting screw G (see Fig. 2) which passes transversely therethrough and engages the frame A, so that by turning the screw C the lower end of the bar C can be made to swing with relation to the end of the frame A.
The point end a, of the frame A, and the opposite end o thereof, and the lower end of the bar G, are bifurcated to receive the sawblade A Upon each wing of the lower or bifurcated end of the bar C, I pivot the wings of a bifurcated lever I), by means of inclependent or separate pivots D D (see Fig. 6). The wings of this lever D, are provided with hooks (Z (Z, (see Figs. 3, 4: and 6) to receive a transverse stud-pin (L in the end of the saw-blade A so that when the blade is in place, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, it will be taut, and should there be a slight difference in the length of the saws, the necessary tension can be secured by adjustment of the downward from the handle A, as shown in Fig. 4, and the transverse stud-pins a removed from the hooks (Z d, of the lever D, when the opposite end of the blade can be disengaged from the point a, of the frame as usual. After the saw is thus removed, the bar C, the lever D, pivoted thereon, and the guide-plates E, can be bodily removed from claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s p In a saw, the comblnation of a frame having a recess in one end thereof, a bar bodily and removably fulcrumed in said recess, interlocking means to prevent the accidental moving of said bar from said recess, and a tension lever pivotally attached to said bar, substantially as described.
