BE. KRUMBEIN.
DIRIGIBLE LAMP. 1 APPLICATION FILED MAR. 4, 1915- Patented June 13, 1916.
Inventor Attorneys lurs ELMEB E. KRUMBEIN, OF WOMELSDORF, PENNSYLVANIA.
nmrorsnn LAMP.
Nam I Specificat on of Letters Patent.
Patented June is, isle;
Application filed March 4, 1915. Serial No. 12,048.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Emma E. KRUMBEIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Womelsdorf, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Dirigible Lamp, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to dirigible lamps especially designed for .use in connection with motor vehicles, although it is to be understood that the same can also be used on other forms of vehicles.
()ne of the objects of the invention is to provide a lamp of this type having a stationary casing,- the lamp and its support being revoluble within the casing, thus to cast the light rays in a desired direction.
A further object to provide a lamp which, in view of the fact that the casing thereof does not stir, can be made of any attractive shape.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details or construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the pre- .ferred fbr'm of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings :Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lamp embodying the present improvements, a portion of a inud guard and of a steering knuckle of a motor vehicle being shown, Fig. 2 is'an enlarged vertical longitudinal section through the lamp. Fig. 3 is a section on line A-B Fig, 2.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference G designates a portion of a front mud guard of a motor vehicle and K designates a portion of a steering knuckle.
The housing of the lamp constituting the present invention has been indicated at 1 and can be of any shape and proportions desired. This housing is fixedly mounted on the mud guard G and is provided with ventilating openings 2 in its top, While the front of the housing is rounded and has an opening 3 extending through approximately 180 degrees.
A cylinder i is mounted for rotation in the housing, there being bearing faces 5 Within Hector 12.
having a tiered open the housing for engagement with the outer surface of the cylinder and said housing bemg also engaged and retained by shoulders candescent lamps, indicated at 8 and these lamps project into a hood 9 the front of which is disposed back of an opening 10 in the Wall of cylinder 4 and has a lens 11. The hood 9 is provided at its back end with re- A ventilating opening 13 may be provided in ventilating opening Ll may be provided in the top of cylinder 4.
A downwardly-extending stem 15 is connected to the center of the bottom of-cylinder 1 and is adapted to be rotated when the front wheels of the vehicle are turned. about their knuckles K. nect the stem. 15 to the running gear, a lazy tongs 1G is preferably provided, the upper end of the lazy tongs being attached to the stem 15 while the lower end is attached to the knuckle K in eny preferred manner whereby when the .lrnuclrle is turned, the lazy tongs 16 and the stem 15 will also be. turned.
The parts are so positioned that when the front wheels are arranged to travel straight ahead, the hood 9 light rays directly forward through the opening in the housing 1. When the front wheels are turns, to the right or to the left, a corresponding movement will. be imparted to the cylinder 4: and the hood 9 so that light rays will be correspondingly turned to the right or to the left. As the frontolt' the housing is formed with the elongated opening 3 extending through approximately 180 degrees, it will be apparentthat this turning of the lamp will not result in the light rays being obstructed by the housing 1.
What is claimed is The combination with a lamp supporting structure, of a housing fixed upon saidstruc ture and having a front opening extending from one side to the other, a cylinder rhount-- ed for rotation within the housing and ham ing an opening in the wall thereof at ts this support being indicated at 7. Thesaid support-may carry one or more inln order to properly" conis located to throw the the top of the hood and another front and a. heat outlet openingin iw upper,
end, a hood secured within said'cylinder andend extending about the opening in the front of the cylinder, a,
