Description
E. P; FOWLER.
NASAL DOUCHE.
APPLICATION FILED Dsc. To. 1909.
Patented June 6, 1916.
INVENTOR EDMUND P. FOWLER, 0F YORK, N. Y.
.. NAsAL DOUCHE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 10, 1909. Serial No. 532,355.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, EDMUND P. FowLnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, Ahave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nasal Douches, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to improvements in doucliing and spraying` devices, andV the same has for its object to provide a simple, efficient and reliable nasal douche or sprayer which is adapted to be. operated by blowing into the body thereof to create an air pressure upon the fluid therein. v
Further, said invention has for its object to provide a device which is so constructed that when the nozzle thereof is properly in position within the nose, the aperture in the body thereof will be in position to be engaged by the lips of the operator.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide a device which shall'be easy to operate, convenient to handle, and composed of the smallest number of parts pos`y parts, Figure 1, is a side view showing one form of douche or spraying device constructed according to and embodying my said invention; the same being shown in the hand of the operator and in position for use; Fig. 2, is a top view of the atomizer;
Fig. 8, a front view thereof; Fig. 4, a'sec-` tion taken on the line 4-4 of lFig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view showing a modied construction.
In said drawings 10 designates a doucheY or spraying device formed of glass, or other suitable material comprising a bulbous rereptacle or body portion 11 having an up' wardly projecting vtapering nozzle 12, and within said receptacle or body portion 11 is arrange a tube 13 which is secured at its upper end to the end of the nozzle 12 and provided adjacent to said end with small .apertures or foramna 14 14. The lower en@ of said tube 13 is curved and extends to a point adjacent to the bottom of the receptacle or body portion 11. Y
The receptacle or body portion 11 is provided at one side at a point directly below the end of the nozzle 12 and in'a vertical plane with the end thereof (Fig. 4) with an aperture 15 having a flange 16 surrounding the same and extending outwardly therefrom to form a mouth piece, which also serves as a means for the` introduction ofV fluid into said receptacle 11.
In the modification illustrated at Fig. 5 the receptacle or body portion 20 is construct-ed essentially as hereinabove described, except that in this instance the end of the nozzle 21 is open, and provided along its outer surface adjacent to said end with screw threads 22, and upon said threaded end is fitted a. cap 23 to which is secured a tube 24 having its free end extending downwardly into said receptacle or body portion 20. l
The operation of the device is the same in both constructions. To operate the same it merely becomes necessary to fill the body portion or receptacle to a-point just below Patented. .time e, ioie.
the lower edge of the aperture 15, and insert tacle '11 the fluid therein will be causedto rise in the tube 13 and issue from the upper end thereof. Where no perforations are provided in the upper end of said tube the Huid will be discharged in the form of a stream, but where apertures or foramina 14 14 are provided in the upper end of vsaid tube the stream of fluid as it issues from said tube will be broken yup or atomized, and then forced into the nostril. Any fluid which may pass from the nozzle downwardly upon the outer surface of the receptacle will be prevented from contacting with the lips or mouth of the user owing to the arrangement and construction of the flanged mouth-piece surrounding the opening in the side of said receptacle.
It will, of course, be understood thatalterations in the shape of the 'receptacle or body portOIl of the device may be made without changing the relative positions of the nozzle and mouth-piece.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the character described, comprising a receptacle having an opening in the side thereof, an inclined nozzle p0rtion extending upwardly from the top of said receptacle and having its end terminating in a vertical plane above the opening in the side of said receptacle, and a delivery tube having its open upper end secured to the end of said nozzle and the remainder of said tube free from said nozzle extending downwardly into said receptacle, substantially as specilied.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a receptacle having an opening in the side thereof, a nozzle projecting from the top of said receptacle, and a tube having its open upper end secured to said nozzle and provided adjacent to its upper end with apertures, and its other end extending downwardly into said receptacle.
3. A device of the character described, comprising a receptacle having an opening in the side thereof, and a flanged mouth Apiece surrounding said opening, an integral tapering upper portion forming a nozzle having its end arranged above and in a vertical plane with the opening in the side of said receptacle, screw threads provided upon the end of said nozzle, a cap adapted for securement to the threaded end of said nozzle, and a tube having its upper' end secured to said cap, and its lower end extending downwardly into said receptacle, substantially as specified.
Signed at the city ofvNew York, in the county and State of New York, this 3d day of February, nineteen hundred and nine.
EDMUND P. FOWLER.
