SPLIT-HUB LOCK.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEs'r L. TEIoH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, county of Hartford, State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Split-Hub Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in split hub locks, and has for its object to provide a lock having a split hub, one part of which is dogged by a night latch in the ordinary manner, and the other part of which is always free to be rotated by the innerknob, said hubs forming parts of independently acting rollbacks, said lock being so constructed that angular displacement of the mortise in the door relatively to the outer surfaces of the door can be compensated for by angular displacement of the spindle relatively to the split hub. Heretofore, locks having hubs for single rollbacks have been so constructed as to have this compensation characteristic but so far as I am aware there has been no provision for compensation in looks having split hubs and swivel spindles.
By means of my invention a spindle in a split hub lock can be so positioned relatively to the look as to compensate for an angular position of the mortise.
The following is a description of an embodiment of my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a plan view of the lock with certain portions in horizontal section; Fig. 2 is a side and end View of the inner end of one portion of the swivel spindle;
Fig. 3 shows similar views of the other end,
Fig. 4c shows a longitudinal section of the swivel spindle; Fig. l shows a side elevation of one of the hubs; Fig. 5 shows a modified form of spindle section; Fig. 6 shows a modified construction, in which the swivel spindle is of uniform cross section and the compensation is permitted by the shape of the holes in the hubs. Fig. 6 shows an end view of one of the hubs of Fig. 6.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 represents a section of a door having a mortise therein which is at a slight angle with the external surfaces of the door, the
angular position being necessary when the edge of the door is not at right angles to the lateral surfaces of the door as shown in Fig. l, in order that the face plate of the lock may be flush with the surface of the end of the door and sometimes occurring on account of error by the carpenter.

-l is the hub of the outer roll-back con trolled by the outer knob. 5 is the hub of the inner roll-back controlled by the inner knob. The roll-back 4 is dogged by the night latch in the ordinary manner.
6 is a section of a swiveled spindle connected to the outer knob. 7 is a swiveled spindle section connected to the inner knob. These two sections are swiveled in the ordinary manner, one being provided with a screw threaded projection and the other being provided with a screw threaded cavity for the same. As in ordinary practice these spindle sections are foursided. They are, however, each of them provided with foursided inner end portions which taper outwardly. The surfaces of these tapering portions, in the form shown in Figs. 1 to l, are formed bytapering caps which are clamped upon the inner ends of the spindle sections, the inner ends of the spindle shanks being so shaped as to conform to the inner surfaces of these caps. The hubs of the roll-backs have holes therein, which are square in cross section and at their inner ends correspond to the largest dimensions of these tapering surfaces. With this construction the axis of the swivel spindle may lie at an angle to the axis of the holes of the roll-backs without materially interfering with the operation of the look so that the angular position of the lock relatively to the outer surfaces of the door will be compensated for and permit the spindle to be at right angles to those outer surfaces, the
larger ends of the tapering portions fitting closely the swiveled ends of the holes.
As will be evident, the tapering angular surfaces may be provided either as shown in Figs. 1 to 4, or they may be formed directly upon the spindle shank, as shown in Fig. 5. Furthermore, the spindle may be made of uniform cross-section and the compensation secured by tapering the holes within the V roll-back, as shown in Figs. 6,6? In these Figs. In all cases the space between the end of a spindle section andits hub, on account of the shaping ofthe opposing surfaces, is shaped so that it expands as the outer face As will be evident to those skilled in the art, my invention permits of other modifications without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.
WVhat I claim is:
1. In a lock, the combination of a divided roll-back, a swiveled spindle having relatively movable portions for actuating each part of the roll-back independently of the other, the opposing surfaces of each spindle section and the hub co-acting therewith being shaped so as to form a space between saidsection and its roll-back hub which excopies of this patent may be obtained for pands as the outer face of the roll-back hub is approached.
2. In a lock, the combination of a divided roll-back, a swiveled spindle having portions for actuating each part of the rollback independently, the'opposing surfaces of each spindle section and the hub co-acting therewith, being shaped so as to form a space between said section and its roll-back, which expands as the outer face of the rollback hub is approached, said spindle sections having upon their inner end angular portions which increase at cross-section as the end of the spindle section is approached.
3. In a lock, the combination of a divided roll-back, -a swiveled spindle having portions for actuating each part of the rollback'independently, the opposing surfaces of each spindle section and the hub co-acting therewith, being shaped so as to form a space between said section and its roll-back, which expands as the outer face of the rollback hub is approached, said spindle sections having upon their inner end angular faces which increase at cross-section as the end of the spindle section is approached, said surfaces being provided by angular caps carried by the ends of said spindle sections.
