To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that .l. HENRY ALmnrr ()LssoN. a citizen of the United States, and a resident of incinnati, in the county of llamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lli'uslrMai-hines. of which the following is a full. clear. and exact description.
This invention relates to brush machines and more particularly to improved brush machines for drilling and filling brush backs or blocks simultanemisly. such as shown and described in my co-pending application filed Mar. 19. 1913. Serial No. 755,344).
The principal object of the invention is to provide an improved brush machine of this character in which the back or block sup porting members (sometimesreferred to as supporting or clamping templets or platens) may be automatically positioned so that the brush backs will be moved from hole to hole without the aid of specially cut cams.
Another object of this invention is to provide a brush machine of this character which eliminates the ditlicnlty experienced in the so called cam machines when dismantling them. which isnecessary when changing from one set of cams to another, by providing improved mechanism whereby the changing from one pattern or style of brushto another am he quickly and accurately effected by adjustment only.
A further object of the invention is to provide a machine which will be universally adjustable so that a brush with tufts driven into the blocks on more or less slant. or no slant at all. can he made on one and the same machine without the replacement of parts or cutting of eams. but simply through adjustment.

when they are presented for boring and filling at various angles, and no matter how great the desired angles, either sidewise or endwise, the holes are bored in the brush back to a uniform depth without the use of cams and adjustment of parts.
All of these objects I attain through the parts, combinations of parts, and details of construction which will be more fully described in the following specification, which shows a preferred construction of amachine constructed in accordance with my invention.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side view of this improved machine. Figs. 2 and 3 are front and plan views respectively thereof. Fig. .4 is a cross section taken substantially on the line H of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section taken approximately on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a section taken approximately on the line 6-6 of Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a plan view of the brush back supporting member employed in my invention. Fig. 8 is a sectional view through one of the brush back supporting members as shown in Fig. 7. Fig. 9 is a fragmentary side view of the machine illustrating the mechanism for coupling the brush back supporting members of the machine together. In the present machine two work supporting members A and B are provided, each a duplicate of.the other. Each of these members comprises a T shaped base 20 having a slot 51 in the head portion-53 thereof and slots 49 and 50 in the tail portion 52 thereof, transverse of each other, and

In a brush machine, the combination with work supporting members, of'means for moving said members in straight paths in horizontal and vertical planes, said means eomprising' a reciprocating and rotating pat tern drum, push bars mounted thereon, sl1dable members operating thereby and mechanism connecting said slidable members with said work supporting members.

In a brush machine. the combination with work supporting members. of means for moving said members in arcs in horizontal and vertical planes. and straight paths in horizontal and vertical planes. said means comprising a pattern drum rotatable -upon reciprocating bearings. a series of push bars mounted thereon. said slidable members operated thereby. and mechanism whereby said slidable members are connected to the work supporting members and operate same.
9. In a brush machine, the combination with work supporting menlbers. of means for moving said members in arcs in horizontal and vertical planes, said means comprising a pattern drum capable of a recipro ating movement, means for rotating said drum during a portion of its cycle of reciprocation, said pattern drum having push bars mounted thereon, said push bars being adjustable along the line of their length, slidable members engaged thereby, and mechanism whereby said slidable members operate said work supporting members.
10. In a brush machine, the combination with a Work supporting member, means for moving said member in an arc and in straight paths, said means comprising a pattern drum capable of reciprocation, means cooperating therewith for ettecting int-ermittent rotation of said pattern drum, push bars cooperative with said drum, slidable members operated by engagement with said push bars, and mechanism between said slidable members and said work supporting member whereby movement of the slidable members is imparted to said work supporting member.
11. In a brush machine, the combination with work supporting members, of means for moving said members in arcs and straight paths. said means comprising a rotary pattern drum. pushbars mounted there.- in and capable of longitudinal adjustment, actuating means intermediate s-iid drum and said work supporting inen'iber whereby the engagement of said push bars ailects the movement of said work supporting members. and means whereby said pattern druni. ro-- tated. st p by step to bring each push bar into contact with said intermediate actuating means.
12. In a brush machine. the combination with work supporting mcmlu-rs. of a pattern drum capable of a rotating and rcciproeating mo\'ement intermediate mechanism between said pattern drum and said work supporting members whereby the. movement of said drum operates said work supporting members in arcs and straight paths, push bars mounted on said drum and adjustable longitudinally on said drum, said push bars engaging the said actuating means when the said drum is reciprocated thereby ell'ecting and controlling the arc shaped and straight pathed movements of said work supporting members.

In a brush machine, the combination of work suppor ing members, of a pattern drum,.a series of push bars mounted thereon and adjustable longitudinally. intermediate actuating mechanism between said pattern drum and said work supporting members. said push bars having their ends beveled to engage said actuating mechanism and said pattern drum being capable of rc ciprocatory and rotary movement.
1- In a brush machine, the combination with work supporting members, of a pat tern drum. push bars mounted thereon and adjustable longitudinally, said pattern drum capable of a reciprocating and rotating movement. said push bars mounted in radially disposed slots around the periphery of said pattern drum, intermediate mechanism between said pattern drum and said work supporting members, said mechanism actuated by engagement with the said push bars thereby controlling the movement of the said work supporting members.
15. In a brush machine. the combination with work supporting members, of a series of push bars capable of a reciprocating movement and ot' a step by step movement for bringing each push bar into operative position, intermediate mechanism between said push bars and said work supporting members, said mechanism controlled and operated by said push bars, said intermediate mechanism c n'iprising sliding members engaged by said push bars for effecting the movement of said work supporting members.
16. In a brush machine, the combination with work supporting members, of a pat tern drum capable of a rotating and reciprocating movement, push bars mounted thereon, intermediate mechanism cooperating between said pattern drum and said work supporting members, said actuating nnwhanism including sliding members, said sliding members ha ring contact. extensions thereon for engagement with said push bars, said push bars forming a lock against further movement of said sliding members when in engagement therewith.
17. In a brush machine, the combination with work su1iportirig-members, of a pattern drum. a series 1" push bars longitudinally adjustable thereon, intermediate mechanism between said pattern drum, and said work supporting members said mechanism being controlled and operated by engagement with said push bars, said pattern drum capable of a reciprocating movement.
