BUST-SUPPORTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 30, 1916.
Application filed June 6, 1914. Serial No. 843,417.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KATHERINE. M. FLATER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Bust-Supporter; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to womens apparel, and particularly to a bust-supporter, but is not restricted to such use, as it may be used in any connection for which it may be adapted or appropriate.
The object of my invention is the provision of a supporter of this character which is composed of a minimum of parts, is simple and inexpensive to make, and fits the figure perfectly without any binding or uneven drawing action.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a pattern for making a practically two-piece supporter of this character, which pieces are devoid of seams, tucks, darts, or the like, and are laced or otherwise secured together in front and back, thus enhancing the practicability and commercial value of articles of this nature.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, and while, in its broader aspect, it is capable of numerous modifications, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figures 1 and 2 are front and rear views of a bust-supporter embodying the invention as it appears on a figure, and Figs. 3 and 4 are views of the pattern pieces from which the two parts of the supporter are made.
Referring to the drawings, 1, 1 designate the side members or halves of my improved bust-supporter, each of which extends from front to back and has straight front and back edge strips 2 and 3, respectively, which may form stays or not as desired. The rear edge strips 3 are preferably adjustably secured together at the center of the back by a lacing 4, or in any other suitable manner. The front edge strips 2 are preferably secured together by two sets of lacings 5, 5 which are connected through the medium of two narrow'la-cing strips 6, 6 that are in turn separably connected by hooks and eyes 7 at the center of the front.
My invention particularly resides in the form of the pattern for each member 1 whereby it is possible for such member to be made in a single piece, fit closely and perfectly to the form, and be devoid of any darts, tucks and seams. The side members 1, 1 being of duplicate form, the same pat tern may be used for both. In Figs. 3 and 4 is shown the same pattern in right and left positions. In this pattern 8 designates the straight rear edge to which the rear edge-strip 3 is sewed, and 9 the convexedly curved front edge. The top edge of the pattern is formed with the two spaced upwardly extending front and rear strap portions 10 and 11, respectively, said portions being connected by the curved edge 12, which fits under the arm. The rear portion 11 is considerably higher than the front portion lO, and it is preferable to make that part of the edge 12 which defines the front edge of the part 11, longer and more gradual in its curve than the part of the edge 12 which defines the rear edge of the part 10, as shown. The rear edge of the part 11 is designated 13 and is preferably slightly concaved fro-m a straight line and extends rearward and downward to the upper end of the rear edge 8. The upper end of the rear edge 8 is preferably so disposed that a line at extending at right angles therefrom falls slightly above the lowest portion of the arm curve 12 and slightly below the upper end of the strap part 10, as shown; whereas the upper end of the strap 11 is considerably above such line. In the present instance, the height of the strap 10 above said line is approximately one-third the height of the strap 11 above such line. The front edge of the strap 10 is designated 14 and extends downward from the upper end of saidstrap in substantially a forwardly inclined straight line which terminates in an outward offset or shoulder 15 at the upper end of the front curved edge 9. The front edge 9 may, however, if desired continue in a curved line to the top of the strap 10, as indicated by the dotted line 14'. Such form does not, however, give such a pleasing appearance when the bust-supporter is on a figure.
The front edge 9 curves downward and rearward becoming gradually straighter and terminates at a point which is disposed prising a single piece of material, which,
in a plane considerably below the lowerend 3* over and firmly support the bust. It is plane of the rear edge 8 and in a vertical line b which intersects the arm curve 12 substantially midway of its ends. 'The point of termination of the lower end of therear edge '8 preferably bears such relation to the front edge 9 that a line 0 drawn at right angles from such point intersects the front edge at the bust covering portion thereof, or near its upper end. The waist line of V thepattern is designated 16 and is of inwardly curved form extending upward and rearward from the lower end of the front edge 9 to the lower end of the rear edge 8, as shown.
The sewing of the curved front edge 9 of each member 1 to the respective straight front-edge strip 2 causes a fullness in the front portion of the member over the bust, such fullness being greater at the upper end portion of the strip than at the lower end portion thereof due to the greater curvature ofthe upper end portion of the edge 9. When a bust-supporter embodying the members 1,1 is placed on a figure of suitable size each sidemember fits closely around the respective side members of the figure and the front portion thereof fits over and conforms to the shape of the bust without the necessity of taking any tucks or darts, as
1 has been necessary with all other single piece side members of this character with which I am familiar. The waist line 16 also fits closely around the waist, and the straps l0 and 11 are connected over the shoulders H preferably by elastic connecting straps 17.
It is preferableto provide a stay 18 in .the rear portion of each member '1, such stay extending from the'lower edge or waist line .16 of the pattern, near the rear edge thereof, up to the upper end of the rear strap 11, as shown in Fig. 2. c i
If desired a seam may be provided under each stay 18, as indicated by the dotted line 19 in Fig. 3, when it is desired to economize in material by utilizing small strips of goods for the extreme rear portions of the side members. The provision of a seam at this point does not in any way effect the perfectfitting of the side members under the arms and over the busts, in which portions of the supporter the invention really resides. The reference herein .to tucks, darts and seams means at the points where it has heretofore been customary to provide them in order-to enable the supporter to fit the form;
flt'is evident that each side member isv not only free from darts and tucks but is alsofree from seams by reason of its comdue to the manner of cutting the same, en-
. ables itto conform to the figure and to fit found in practice that my supporter is admirably adapted for use by fleshy persons what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
.1. A bust-supporter having duplicate single piece side members extending from front to back and each adjustably joined at their respective edges, each member having a straight upright rear edge, an inwardly curvin Waist line extendin downward and forward therefrom, a front edge extending in an outer curve upward and forward from said waist line and the top edge being shaped to form front and back shoulder embracing portions, a shoulder strap connecting said portions, and a straight front edge strip secured to the curved front edge of the side member to cause a fullness of such member over the bust.
2. A bust-supporter having duplicate side members extending from front to back and joined. together at their respective edges, said members being free from tucks, darts and seams, and each having a substantially straight rear edge, an inwardly curved Waist line extending downward and for ward from the lower end of said rear edge, an outwardly curved front edge extending upward and forward from the forward end of said waist line, said front edge having its curvature increasing toward its upper end, and a top edge forming front and rear shoulder embracing straps with the front strap disposed below the upper end of the rear strap, the lower end of the rear edge being in position for a line drawn at'right angles thereto to intersect the bust covering portion of said front edge, and the point of connection of the waist line and front edge being disposed in a vertical line which intersects the top edge substantially midway between the front and rear straps, and a straight pliant edge strip secured to the curved front edge of each member to cooperate therewith to form a fullness over the bust.-
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
