Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS STANLEY Romans, a subject of'the Kingdom of Great Britain, residing at Apollo Works, Moseley street, Birmingham, in the county of Warwick, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Audible Electric Signaling Devices, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention comprises certain improvements in audible electric signaling devices and the like, and has for its purpose to generally improve the construction of such devices so as to render same more effective and satisfactory in operation and also enable the parts to be assembled in a particularly rigid and secure manner.
The signaling device comprises broadly a diaphragm carried by a suitable casing or part and adapted to be vibrated in order to give the necessary sound, the vibration of said diaphragm being effected by a plunger member operated by one or more electromagnets and a suitable armature to which magnet or magnets electric current is adapted to be supplied.
In the present invention a frame or member containing or carrying the electromagnets, armature and plunger is adjustably and detachably secured in'position by means of an externally screw threaded rim, annulus or flange furnished at a circumference corresponding substantially with the major or largest circumference of the frame or member, which externally screw threaded rim is screwed in relation to an internally screw threaded portion of the casing or part carrying the diaphragm or to a member adapted to be secured to said casing or part. In this manner any vibration of the frame in relation to the casing or part carrying the diaphragm is prevented and an exceptionally clear, distinct and definite note is produced when the device is in operation.
Means are also furnished for securely locking the frame in its position of connection by suitably expanding the externally threaded boss or rim or a part of the circumference of same so as to more tightly grip or have a locking engagement with the internally threaded part with which same engages.
In this invention also a contact breaker in the nature of an adjustable screw con-' tact member is V furnished with improved means for securely retaining same in any adjusted position, the adjustment of said contact member effecting an increase or decrease in the vibration of the diaphragm as desired.
In order that this invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into practice, reference may be had to the appended explanatory two sheets of drawings, upon which Figure 1 illustrates one form of signaling device according to this invention, showing the outer casing in section. Fig. 2 is a side view of a modified form of this invention showing the adjustable frame removed from outer casing. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section illustrating the method of assembling the screw contact member. Fig. 4: shows in an enlarged section a further method of assembling the screw contact member. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail View in perspective showing one method of locking the adjustable frame in position. Fig. 6 shows a further method of locking the adjustable frame in position.
In a convenient embodiment of this invention a frame is provided comprising upper and lower disks or plates 1 and 2 connected by vertical pillars or posts 3, advantageously three in number. A T-shaped armature 4 is suitably hinged or pivoted to an upstanding member 5 upon the lower plate 2 which will hereinafter be referred to as the base-plate, said armature 4: having a suitable flat or plate spring member 6 upon its under face. This T-shaped armature 4 extends transversely beneath the poles of two electromagnets 7 arranged side by side and disposed to one side of the center of the frame, said magnets 7 being secured to the upper plate or disk 1 of said frame.
Centrally articulated to the armature 4 is a plunger or spindle Shaving around same a coiled spring 9 which presses on the one hand upon the upper disk 1 and on the other hand upon an enlargement 10 on the plunger 8, said plunger passing freely through a central aperture within the upper disk 1, upon which disk the electromagnets 7 are also secured.
In the form of device illustrated in Fig. 1, of the drawings, the upper disk 1 of the frame is furnished at its periphery with an plunger 8 upon the armature 4 is adapted to engage when the device is in operation.
The frame member is assembled with that part 13 of the device carrying the diaphragm 14 by screwing the externally threaded rim or part 11 at the periphery of the upper plate 1 of the frame into the internally threaded boss, rim or sleeve portion 12 of the part 13 carrying said diaphragm, the internally threaded rim 12 being advantageously disposed adjacent to the diaphragm 14, so that when the frame member is assembled the screwed connection between the two members or parts is positioned in close proximity to the diaphragm, and this arrangement coupled with the large diameter of the connection insures a joint of an anti-vibration character.
To securely lock the frame in the assembled position the upper plate or disk 1 having the externally threaded rim 11 is su1tably split or formed with a cut or slit 16 extending from the periphery to a suitable distance on the face of same and advantageously terminating in said face with a circular aperture. At a suitable position along said slit 16 within the plate 11 an internally threaded aperture 17 is provided advantageously at a position near the periphery of the plate or disk 11, the aperture being divided into two halves or parts by the slit 16.
Adapted to engage with this aperture 17 within the split plate or disk is a suitable spindle or rod 18 which passes freely through an aperture within the lower plate or disk 2 of the frame, the engaging extremity 19 of which spindle 18 is of conical formation and externally screw threaded, which conical extremity 19 is adapted to engage with the aperture 17 within the upper or split plate 1 in such a manner that by screwing said spindle 18 into the aperture 17 the slit or cut 16 in the plate 1 is caused to be widened and in this manner the externally threaded rim 11 of the plate is expanded or pressed outward so as to tightly engage or look with the internally threaded rim 12 of that part 13 of the device carrying the diaphragm 14. The out 16 within the plate 1 is advantageously such that when the locking spindle 18 is tightened or screwed up, a substantially small segmental portion at the outer part of the plate 1 is pressed outwardly, which portion returns to its normal position when the spindle 18 is released. The locking spindle 18 may be formed with a wing nut or other means for facilitating the turning of same.
The contact member 20 which is passed centrally through the lower plate or disk 2 of the frame is adapted to make contact with the plate spring 6 upon the under face of the armature 4 and is secured in position by means of a suitable sleeve portion 21 which is passed centrally through the plate member 2 of the frame part of Said sleeve21 be ing externally threaded and furnished with a flange or enlargement 22 at its outer or lower extremity in such a manner that when in position the flange 22 is disposed upon the under face of the plate 2 and a suitable nut 23 is assembled over the sleeve 21 upon the screw threaded portion of same at the upper or inner, side or face of the plate 2. This sleeve member 21 is internally threaded to receive the screw contact member 20 and a suitable portion of the upper part of the sleeve member 21 is cut away transversely as at 24, in such a manner that the upper or inner part 25 of the sleeve 21 constitutes an overhanging internally threaded annulus or collar connected integrally by a segmental portion with the lower or main part of the sleeve. The inner or upper annular portion 25 of the sleeve 21 is suitably pressed or forced toward the lower or main portion of said sleeve to a suitable degree in such a manner that when the screw contact 20 is inserted therein the screw threads upon said contact 20 are caused to lock or bind to a certain degree with the threads within the annular or inner portion 25 of the sleeve 21, by reason of the fact that the threads within said portion 25 have been pressed somewhat out of alinement with or caused to assume a different inclination or pitch to the remaining threads of the sleeve 21 and to those upon the screw contact 20 and in this manner the said screw contact is effectively retained in its adjusted position within the sleeve, the inner extremity of same engaging with the contact on the spring member 5. However that part of the sleeve 21 which is free from external screw threads and is furnished with the transverse slot 24 may project from the underside of the flange or abutment 22 as shown in Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawings, that is to say on the exterior face of the disk orplate 2, the annular portion 25 in this case being at the lower or outer extremity of the sleeve instead of at the upper or inner extremity.
An aperture 26 is disposed within the casing or part 13 carrying the diaphragm 14 from which the vibratory sound caused by the strokes of the plunger 8 upon the diaphragm is emitted, and a suitable horn shaped member or part 27 may be furnished extending from the aperture 26 for more effectively transmitting the sound.
The lower plate or disk 2 of the frame may be suitably serrated or milled at its periphery for facilitating the turning or rotation of same when being assembled or disassembled.
When the frame is assembled with the part 13 carrying the diaphragm 14 a suitable cover member 28, advantageously of cylindrical formation and having its one end closed, is adapted to be passed over the frame so as to inclose same, the internally threaded rim portion 12 within which the frame is screwed being also externally threaded so as to permit the cover 28 to be screwed over same. A central aperture 29 is provided within the closed extremity of the cover 28 for the passage therethrough for the electric conductors.
In the modification shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings an externally screw threaded annular rim or flange 30 is furnished at the periphery of the lower or base plate or disk 2 instead of on the upper disk 1 as pre viously described, said rim 30 projecting either upwardly or downwardly as desired. This rim 30 forms the one connecting element of the connection between the frame and any suitable form of outer casing or cover furnished with an internally screw threaded part so that the frame and casing can be screwed in relation to each other for enabling said frame to be secured 1n position. The casing containing the frame is adapted to be suitably securely fixed tothe part 13 or other suitable part carrying the diaphragm 141. The diaphragm may if desired be fixed firmly between a flange or like part on the cover containing the frame and a correspondin flange upon the part 13. In this modifiec form of the invention the slit 16 is advantageously furnished in the base plate 2 instead of the upper plate 1, and in this case a small screw member or stud 31 (see Fig. 6) of substantially conical formation is inserted in the aperture 17 so as to effect the locking of the frame in position in the manner described with reference to Figs. 1 and 5.
The terminals for the electric conductors to the device may be of the usual character comprising suitable stud or like members 82 passed through the lower plate 2 of the frame, one of the said terminals being con nected with the central contact member 20 by means of a suitable plate or the like.
The contact member 20 and terminals 32 are insulated from the lower plate or disk of the frame in any desired manner.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. An audible electric signaling device comprising a diaphragm, 'a' plunger, an electromagnet from which said plunger is operated for vibrating said diaphragm, an adjustable contact breaker in the form of a screw, a stationary internally screw threaded sleeve into which said contact member is screwed for determining the degree of vibration, a number of the internal screw threads of said sleeve being pressed out of alinement with the remaining threads for assuming a different inclination to said remaining internal screw threads and to the threads on the screw contact so as to have a binding or looking engagement with the screw threads on the contact member for securely retaining the same in its position of adjustment.
2. An audible electric signaling device comprising a diaphragm, a plunger, an electromagnet from which said plunger is operated for vibrating said diaphragm, an adjustable contact breaker in the form of a screw, a stationary internally screw threaded sleeve into which said contact member is screwed for determining the degree of vibration at a suitable position so as to leave an overhanging portion at one extremity, adapted to be pressed toward the main sleeve portion to a certain degree for causing the internal threads of the overhanging portion to assume a different inclination or pitch to those of the main portion.
