Description

' A. N. BAKER.
EYE-SHIELD. APPLICAIIION FILED n Ec'.2s, 1915.
1,12 7%- Patented May 9,1916.
A TTORIVEVS ARTHUR N. BAKER, OE LOG-ANSPOBT, INDIANA.
earse.
1 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR N. BAK R,
a citizen of the United States,'and a resident 1 of Logansport, in'the county of Vass and State of Indiana, have invented a new and- Improved Eye-Shield, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to eyeshields and particularly to detachable shields designed to coact with the vizor of a cap or other headgear.
Another object in view is to provide a shield which may be quickly removed or applied to the vizor of a' cap and when applied may be readily moved to an operative or inoperative'position by-a pressure on the shield itself.
In the accompanying drawingi Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional view through Fig. 3 on line 1 -1; Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. l but showing the shield folded; Fig. 3 is a front view of a cap provided with a vizor and a shield embodying the invention applied thereto; Fig. 4 is a detail perspective .view of the shield removed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings bv numerals, 1 indicates a cap of any desired kind and 2 a vizor while 3 represents the shield, said shield being arranged to be quickly applied and removed. Spring members 4 and 5 are provided for. gripping the vizor 2, said members 'beinggpreferably formedfrom the ends of the crossbar 6 bent for producing bottom loops 7 andf'8, respectively, and top loops or tongues 9.- and 10,
- respectively, saidloops 9 and 10 each merging into a ring. The cross bar 6 may be straight or slightly bowed as desired and is arranged in a loop 11 of the plate 12which is bent over the translucent guard 13 and held in place thereon by having parts stamped therefrom or by suitable rivets 14. The plate 12 is arranged so that loop 11 will fit rather tightly against bar 6, whereby the friction between the parts will hold the guard 13 in any adjusted position, as for instance, in either of the positions shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Guard 13 may be made from celluloid, glass, metal or other material frosted or provided with coloring matter and may be made translucent or partially transparent, as may be desired, so 'as to check or reduce the glare of a strong light. Also, if desired, the guard may be made transparent and used as a wind shield.
Specification of Letters Patent.
see the Patented May a. rein.
Application filed December 28, 1915. Serial No. 89,680.
In operation, the members 4; and 5 are forced on to the vizor so as to occupy'the' po-' sition substantially shown in Flg. 2 and member 13 and associated parts moved to a folded position, as shown in Fig. 2. Ordinarily the device is worn in this position so that there will be an unobstructed view continually. 1 In case the driver or person using the device approaches a strong light, as for instance, a headlight of an on-coming automobile, he can quickly and easily move the member 13 and associated parts pivotally down to-the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3, whereupon he may look through member 13. Thls will effectively protect his eyes while allowing him to easily road beneath member 13 if he so desires. When the light has been passed member 13 and associated parts may be again folded. It will. be noted that the device may be quickly applied and removed and also quickly moved-from an operative to an inoperative position.
.What I claim is: p
1. In an eyeshield. of the character described, abar having the ends bent for producing a pair of loops and a resilient tongue, said loops and said tongue being adapted to grip the vizor of a cap when the device s in an operative position on the cap, a partially transparent guard, and a clamping member for connecting the guard and said connecting bar, said clam ing-member fitting the bar sufficiently tight to hold the partially transparent guard either in elevated or in lowered position.
2-. In an eyeshield of the character described, a supporting bar, aclamp arranged on each end of the supporting bar whereby the supporting bar may be connected to the vizor of guarding member for the eyes, and a metallic plate clamped to said and encircling said bar, said plate gripping the bar to such an extent as to produce su cient friction to hold the partially transpar-v ent guard in any adjusted position. v In testimony-whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
v ARTHUR N. BAKER.
