To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Gnonen O. Lnoronn, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Hand and Power Feed Mechanism for Drilling-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My, invention relates to certain improvements in feed mechanism for drill presses of the comparatively small type which are preferably operated by power.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple means for operating the feed mechanism by hand, as well as automatically by power. This obfect I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, is a front view of the upper portion of a drill press illustrating my invention; Fig. 2, is a side view of the upper portion of a drill press; Fig. 3, is a plan view; Fig. 4c, is a sectional view on the line H, Fig. 1; and Fig. 5, is a sectional view on the line 5-5, Fig. 1.

2 is the feed screw.
3 is the spindle which is driven in any suitable manner from a power shaft 1. In the present instance, I have shown a bevel gear wheel 5 on the power shaft through which the spindle is driven.
The above described construction forms no part of my present invention.
The feed screw is loose on the spindle 3, but is connected with it so that on turning the feed screw the spindle will be raised and lowered. The feed screw is adapted to a threaded opening in the bearing 1 on the frame 1 and secured to the upper end thereof is a beveled wheel 9 and a ratchet wheel 10. The ratchet wheel, in the present instance, is separate from the beveled wheel and both are forced onto the reduced portion of the screw. On turning either the ratchet wheel or the beveled wheel the screw will be turned.
11 is a standard secured to the frame 1 and arranged to slide on this standard is a block 12. The spindle 3 passes through this block and is held thereto by a screw 13. Between the block and the ratchet wheel is a cam 14:, Fig. 4:, which is splined to the spindle so that it turns therewith.

15 is a pawl carrier pivoted at 16, the pivot pin extending from the block, in the present instance, and mounted in the carrier 15 is a spring pressed pawl 17, which can be turned by means of the arm 18. The
point of this pawl is beveled on one side, but
is straight on the other so that it will feed the ratchet wheel in either direction as dictated by the position of the arm 18. On the frame 1 is a fixed shifter 19 with which the arm comes in contact as it reaches its lowest point so as to automatically throw out the power feeding mechanism.
Carried by the block 12 is a horizontal spindle 20 on which is mounted a beveled gear wheel 21 which meshes with the beveled pinion 9 on the screw 2. At the back of this gear wheel are sockets 22 in which are mounted the handles 23 by which the gear wheel is turned so that, on turning the gear wheel 21, the screw can be raised or lowered independently of the power mechanism when the pawl 17 is in such position that the screw can be turned.
It will thus be seen that I provide means carried by the block 12 by which the spindle carrying the drill chuck can be raised and lowered by hand when it is necessary to adjust the drill to the work, without interfering with the automatic mechanism for feeding the drill when power is applied.

The combination in a drilling machine, of a frame; a spindle; a feed screw mounted on the spindle and connected therewith so that the spindle can be raised and lowered on the turning of the feed screw; means for driving the spindle; a gear Wheel and a ratchet wheel secured to the screw, the whole forming a feed mechanism; means connecting said feed mechanism with the spindle so that the screw will be turned by power; a block on the spindle; and a hand gear Wheel meshing with the gear wheel on-the screw, said hand gear wheel being carried by the block and movable vertically with the screw.

The combination in a drilling machine, of a frame; a spindle; a screw adapted to a threaded opening in the frame and connected to the spindle so that the spindle will be moved longitudinally with the screw, but will be free to turn independently therein; a standard projecting from the frame; a block on the standard to which the spindle is connected; a cam splined to the spindle; a carrier inclosing the cam, said carrier being pivoted to the block; a pawl mounted on the carrier; a beveled gear wheel and a ratchet wheel secured to the screw and located under the cam; a pawl on the carrier arranged to engage the teeth of the ratchet wheel; a spindle projecting laterally from the block; a beveled gear wheel on the spindle and meshing with the gear wheel on ratchet wheel so that when the pawlis disengaged the spindle can be turned in either 15 direction by hand and when the pawl is in engagement the screw will be fed by power through the spindle.
