Application led .'l'uly 13, 1
T 0 all whom t 'may concern:
Be it known that I, ALVIN J. GRUENEN- FELDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Highland, in the county ot Madison, State of lllinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Ties; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. f
This invention relates to improvements in railway rail ties.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a tie which will effectively hold the rails without use of spikes.
Another object is to provide a tie which will firmly hold the rails in proper spaced relation and prevent sliding thereof.
Another object is to pro-vide clamping means which can be quickly and easily aplied or removed.
Other objects and advantages will be apwhen taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
1n the drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view of several ties made in accordance with my invention and the rails secured thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawings, 10 represents the tie which is preferably made of metal on which are suported the rails 11 and 12. Formed integrally on the upper side of the tie are the lips 13 and 14 which extend in the same direction and engage with the corresponding sides of the bases of the rails 11 and 12. On the opposite side of each of the rails, and

disposed vertically through the tie is a bolt 15 provided on its upper end with a head 16 for engagement with the base flange of the rail. In one side of the tie is formed a recess 17 in which is disposed a nut 1S through which the threaded shank ot the bolt 15 passes. The head 16 of the holt is Jformed for engagement by the wrench, the recess 17 being of proper size to prevent rotation of the nut while the bolt is being turned down into clamping position with the rail. The adjacent tie 19 is formed with the lips 2() and 21 extending in a direction opposite to that of the lips 13 and 14, and engaging the bases of the rails Lfrom the opposite side thereof. The tie 19 also carries bolts 15 and nuts 18, but these are disposed respectively at the outer side of the rail 11 and inner side of the rail 12. By an inspection of Fig. 1, it will be seen that the lips ci the alternate ties extend in the same direction. By staggering the lips, the rails are firmly clamped against lateral movement, this being further insured by the clamping bolts 15.
What is claimed is:
A railway tie comprising a hollow metallic body formed in its sides with outwardly opening recesses having vertically alined apertures in their upper and lower walls, nuts non-rotatably seated within the recesses and registering with said. apertures, and bolts inserted through the apertures and threaded in said nuts, said bolts extending beyond the upper face ot the tie to clampingly engage an adjacent rail base.
