1 '0 all to ham it may concern Be it known that we, PAUL F. DUSHA and ANTON Fern, citizens of the United States, and residents of the city of New York,
borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Stock-Holding Device for Button-Cutting Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a machine for cutting pearl button blanks, and has to deal more particularly with a combined gage, steadying device and support for the stock from which the blanks are cut.
The invention has for its general objects to provide a device of the character referred to which is of comparatively simple and inexpensive construction, durable and eflicient in use, and so designed as to enable stock with the greatest economy and without liability of the stock turning and injuring the operator.
A more specific object of the invention is rest for the stock from which the button blank is out, there being combined with the said support a finger that serves as a gage to engage in the recess left by a prior blank cut whereby another blank can be cut in close proximity to the said recess with the smallest possible waste of material, and whereby the gage prevents the stock from turning with the cutter.
With such objects in view, and others which will. appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be set forth with particularity in the following description and claim appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates one embodiment of the invention and wherein similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of a blank cutting machine with the combined StOCK support and gage in position: Fig. 2 is a front view of the combined support and gage; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the support and gage device with the cutter in the act of cutting out a blank; and Fig. 4: is a perspective view showing the process of cutting a blank from the shell stock.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates a rotary cutter which is mounted in a chuck 2, the cutter being of usual form and consistlng of a hollow tubular body having edge cutt ng teeth 3. Cooperating with this cutter is a combined support and gage device A which forms the subject matter of the present invention. This is mounted in the tall stock of the machine and comprises a cylindrical body a formed in its end face with two rows of circular teeth 5 and 6 separated by an annular recess 7 which alines with the cutter 1 so that the latter can enter the recess when a blank is completely out from the stock B. This device A has an annular flange 8 to which is fastened a short metal piece 9 in the form of a finger extending parallel with the axis of the cutter but to one side thereof. This finger projects beyond the serrated edges 5 and 6 of the body 4. and operates as a gage and steadying device for the stock B. The nearest portion of the gage 9 is spaced at a slightly greater radial distance from the axis of the cutter 1 than is the radial dimension of the cutter, so that the cutter can pass the gage 9 without the latter interfering as the blank is cut from the stock. There is but a slight clearance at 10 between the cutter and the gage finger 9, so that there will be a minimum amount of waste of material as the blanks are cut out. The gage 9 is suitably shaped according to the cut or curve in the material. It does away with the necessity of the operator holding the stock after it is clamped between the cutter and back support A, as the finger 9 prevents the stock from rotating, and the cutter and support are moved relatively toward each other to perform the cutting operation.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and method of operation will be readily understood by thoseskilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while we have described the principle of operation, together with the device which we now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, we desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made when desired as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
