. WAGON-BOX.
Y b (/15 whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BowDnY MGHA'ITON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Odessa, in the county of Lafayette and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Boxes; and I do declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willenable others skilled inthe art, to which it appertains to make anduse the same,.reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters andffigures of referencemarked thereon, which form a part of this specification. I
My invention relates to wagon boxes, and has for its object to provide a light, substantial, sheet'metal box, having slidable, interlocking joints connecting the different parts, that especially adapt the'box for hauling of loose grain, or the like.
In accomplishing this object, I-have pro? vided the improved details of structure hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure I is a perspective view of a wagon box embodying my invention. Fig. II is a longitudinal, vertical sectional view of the box. Fig. III is a front elevation of the box. Fig. IV is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. V is an enlarged detail perspective, showing the slidable, interlocking joint between the side members and end gates. Fig. VI is a sectional perspective, showing the overlapping flanges of the end gate. Fig. VII is a vertical sectional view of one of the central side members.
Referring .more in detail to the drawings: 1 designates a wagon body embodying my invention and comprising front and rear cross sills 2, and central cross sills 3, on which are mounted the various box members consisting of a bottom 4, which is preferably formed of a single piece of sheet metal, lower and upper side members 5-6, and lower and upper'end gates. 7- 8, all of which parts are held together by interlockingjoints and the end cross rods 9.
The cross sills 23 consist of downwardly opening, channeled, metallic beams riveted, or otherwise secured to the bottom plate 4t, and having their ends projecting beyond the sides of the box and provided near the ends with apertures 10 for receiving rods 11, which are bolted thereto and to I Specificationof Letters Patent.
the side member 5, to. brace and strengthen the latter.
In order that there may be a tight, g'rainwhich theside edge of the bottom plate tis projected, and sealed therein to form a tight closed joint. On the lower edge of the upper s de members 6 is an outturned, inte- I Patented May 9, 1916. Application filed June 27, 1914. SeriaLNo. 847,662.
grally, formed flange let, which is adapted for slidable mounting within the inwardly opening slot 15 of the upper flange 16 of i the side-board 5 to form a closed joint."
The end members 7-8 have at each end an outturned flange 17 slidably mounted within an inwardly opening. slot 18, formed by oilsetting a portion 19 of plates 19 which are secured on the inner face and at the ends ofjeach .sidemember, the endmen bers being supported in position by angle members 20 that are spaced from the oflset plates 19 and secured to the side members. The lower end member 7 consists of a single sheet metal plate having its upper edge bent outwardly and 'backwardly upon itself forming a flange 21. The upper end member 8 is a single piece of sheet metal having a beaded upper edge and having its lower edge turned inwardly and downwardly and then turned back on itself to form a lip 22, and continued horizontally and turned downwardly to form an outer lip 22, thus forming achannel 22 for receiving the laterally turned flange 21 of the lower end member 7 After the end gates are placed in position,
they are held secure by the end rods 9, which project through alining apertures in the side members and the flanges 19, and the outturned flanges 17 of the end gates, which hold the various parts firmly together forming a very rigid body. It will be seen that the flanges of the various side and end members not only serve as joining parts, but also serve as stiffening members for the box, thus making it rigid and substantial.
On each side of the box are placed spacers 23 for engaging the standards of a running gear, and a central side step 24, which is formed between the central cross sills 3 by an outwardly projecting portion of the bottom plate 4: and an overlying outturned per t me of the flange 12 of the lower side memward or forward sliding movement of the box between the standards. I also provide a reinforcing strip 26, which is secured on the under side of and adjacent the back edge of the bottom plate 4, having its outer ends turned upwardly then inwardly, thus over,-
i lying the flanges 12, and secured to the side members 5, and the inner edge of said strip 26 is curled to form a sleeve 26 forreceiving 'a rod 27 on which is hinged a downwardly opening, shoveling door 28, and
which mayalso be used to support a skid,,
or the like I also provide oppositely disposed seat supporting members29'secured to the side members, and a seat 30.
'Presuming the parts to be constructed and assembled as described, they maybe placed on any ordinaryrunning gear and either a single, or a plurality of tiers of side members may be used, as desired. It
will be seen that by so constructing the box a substantial, rigid body is secured comprising members that will not warp orsplit and which are joined by interlocking closed joints that especially adaptthe wagon box to hauling grain or any loose material of a sifting nature. Having thus described my invention, What I claim' as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. In awagon box the combination wlth a bottom plate, of lower side members inter- 2. In a metallic wagon box, a lower end member. having a lateral, reversely turned flange on its upper edge, and an upper end member having a beaded upper edge and having itslower edge turned inwardly and downwardly then back on itself, then 'continued horizontally then downwardly, forming a. channel for the seating snugly of the upper end member on the lateral flange of the lower end. member. i
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
