The object of the invention is to rovide a new and improved convertible ed arranged to permit of conveniently extending the parts lengthwise to form a bed or to fold the parts to take up little room and to allow of using the bed when in folded position as a davenport or a divan, at the same time making provision for convenient storing of the bedclothes or other articles. 0

In order to accomplish the desired result, use is made of a bed spring frame, made in pivotally connected sections, a head on which one of the sections is pivoted to' swing up into an upright position or down into a horizontal position, a foot and seat support adapted to move toward and from the said head and links connecting the said foot and seat support with the outer frame section to support the latter in raised horizontal position above the foot and seat support and to allow the said outer frame section to rest on the said foot and seat support to form a seat when the parts are in folded position,-

thus providing a divan or davenport.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

The head support A of the convertible bed may be in the form of the tranie ot a divan, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 6, or in the form of the vframe for a davenport, as shown in Figs. 7 and 8, or in the form of the head of a bedstead, as shown in Figs. 9 and 10. In the arrangement. disclosed in Figs. 1 to 6, inclusive, use is made of a bed spring frame formed of a head section B, a middle section B and a foot section B. The head section B of the bed spring frame is provided ateach side near the forward end with a depending lug B provided with a. transverse stud B normally resting in the bottom of an angular slot 1E formed in the bracket E attached to the corresponding side of the head section B. By the arrangement described the head section B may be swung upward into an upright position, as shown in Fig. 6, or downward into horizontal position, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.

In order to prevent the stud B from accidentally passing out of the slot E on swinging the bed frame section B into upright or into horizontal position, use is made of a dog F fulcrumed at F on a In E extending upwardly from the bracket The dog F is provided with a slot F inclined in an opposite direction to the slot E, and the open ends of the slots E and F are in register with each other so that the stud B should it pass out of the slot E passes into the slot F The dog F has'a slight, upward swinging motion, that is, sufficient to raise its free end a distance above-the bracket F to allow the stud B to pass out from under the dog F when the latter is swung upward at the time it is desired to disconnect the bed spring section B from the head support A for shipping or.other purposes.

The sides of the middle sections B and C are pivotally connected with each other at their adjacent ends by links G formed on the upper ends of a leg frame Gr for properly supporting the said sections B and C from the floor whenever the parts are in extended position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2., lhe

outer end of the middle section C is connected b v pivots II with the upper ends of posts I of a foot and seat support I adapted to travel on the floor toward or from-the head support A, as hereinafter more fully explained. The rear ends of the sides of the middle section are provided with detachable extension pieces J to which the forward endsof the sides of the foot at each side by a link L with a link L fulcrumed at L'-- on the foot and seat support I. The free end of the link L'- is adapted to rest on a stud L held on the foot and seat support I to support the foot section D of the bed spring frame in a horizontal position and in alinement with the middle section C and the head section D, as plainly shown in Fig. 1. The top .posts I of the foot and seat support I extend a distance above the top of the said support so that the foot section D when in extended position is a distance above the top of the said foot and seat support, as plainly shown in Fig. 1, but when the parts are in folded position, as shown in Fig. 6, then the foot section D rests on the top of the foot and seat support I to provide a seat for a divan or a davenport, as plainly shown in Figs. 6 and 7. It is understood that when the parts are swung into folded position the extension pieces J cause a downward movement of the foot section D so that the latter seats itself on the foot and seat support I, as above explained and shown in Figs. 6 and 7. WVhen the parts are in the extended position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and it is desired to move the same into a folded position to form a divan then use is made of a catch 0 pivoted at each side of the foot section D and adapted to be seated on the rear edge of the corresponding piece J to hold the foot section D in the angular position, as shown in Fig. 5. The user now bears down on the foot section D to cause the sections B and C to swing and the foot and seat support I to travel forward between the sides of the head support A until the parts finally reach the position shown in Fig.6. It will be noticed that when the parts are inthis folded position the section D rests on the foot and seat support I thus forming the seat for the divan, while the sections B and C extend upwardly and form the back for the divan. The catch 0 moves out of engagement with the pieces J on the parts moviug into final folding position. The foot and seat support I is preferably provided with a receptacle N open at the top for the reception and storage of bedclothes and other articles.

For a davenport, the head section ll is dispensed with and the middle section C forms the frame section and is pivotally connected at each side by a link I with the correspomling'side of the head support as plainly shown in Figs. 7 and 8. The forward end of the section C is supported on a leg frame G", pivotally connected with the section C and by a link Q with the foot and seat support I to allow the sections and l to readily swing into upright, folded position, as shown in Fig. 7, or into an extended position, as shown in Fig. 8. It is understood that when the sections C and D are in-folded position. the section 1) forms the seat for the davenport while the section C forms the back thereof.

In the modified form shown in Figs. 9 and 10, use is made of a bed sprin frame having the three sections B, C and I), the same as above described in reference to the convertible bed illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 6, but in this case the head section B is pivotally connected at its forward end with brackets R attached to the sides of the head support A, and on the lower ends of the said brackets R are pivoted braces S pivotally connected with the middle section C adjacent to the links G of the leg frame G. By this arrangement the sections are guided into posi-' tion when moved into folded position or into extended position, as will be readily understood by reference to Figs. 9 and 10.

The head supports A, the foot and seat support I and the leg frame G are preferably provided with suitable casters adapted to travel on the floor.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A convertible bed spring having a bed spring frame made in pivotally connected sections, a foot and seat support on which one of the said sections is mounted to swing and the other section is adapted to be seated, and connecting means connecting the said support with the other bed spring frame section to hold the latter in raised position and in horizontal alinement with the firstnamed section at the time the sections are in extended position and to allow the said other section to be seated on the said support at the time it is in its lowered position and the parts are in folded position.

2. A convertible bed having a bed spring frame made in pivotally connected sections, a foot and seat support on which one of the sections is pivoted at a point spaced from the pivotal connection of the sections, and connected links of which one is pivoted on iio riaoeae the said support and the other link is pivotally connected with the other outer frame section. p

nected links of which one is pivoted on the said support and the other link is pivotally connected with the other outer frame section, and a locking catch carried by the outer frame section and adapted to engage the adjacent frame section to hold the said outer section in inclined position relative to the firstnamed frame section.

4:. A convertible bed, comprising a head support, a foot and seat support movable toward and from the said head support, a bed spring frame made in pivotally connected sections of which one is the head section and another the foot section, means pivotally connecting the head frame section with the said head support, a link connection connecting the said foot section with the said foot and seat support, and a pivotal connection between the said head frame and the said foot and seat support.

5. A convertible bed, comprising a head support, a foot and seat support movable toward and from the said head support, a bed spring frame having a head section, a middle section and a foot section, the sections being pivotally connected with each other, pivots connecting the head section with the said head support, links connectlng the foot section with the said foot and seat support, and a pivotal connection connecting the said middle section with the said foot and seat support.

A convertible bed provided with a bed spring frame sections, a foot and seat support having front posts rising above the top of the said foot and seat supports, one of the said bed spring frame sections being pivotally connected with the upper ends of the posts and having rearward extensions connecting the bed spring frame sections with each other in the rear of the pivot connecting the firstnamed bed spring section with the said pivoted on the said foot and seat support and the other is pivotally connected with the said other bed spring frame section.

A convertible bed provided with a bed spring frame made in pivotally connected sections, a foot and seat support having front posts rising above the top of the said foot and seat support, one of the said bed spring frame sections being pivotally connected with the upper ends of the posts and having rearward extensions connecting the bed spring frame sections with each other in the rear of the pivot connecting the first named bed spring section with the said posts, connected links of which one is pivot'ed on the said foot and seat support and the other .is pivotally connected with the other bed spring frame section, and a stop on the foot and seat support so disposed to limit the downward swinging motion of the said connected links, and support the section pivotally to the upper ends of the posts in parallel relation to the seat section and above the same.

10. A convertible bed provided with a bed spring frame made in pivotally connected sections, a foot and seat support having front posts rising above the top of the said foot and seat support, one of the said bed spring frame sections being pivotally connected with the upper ends of the posts and having rearward extensions connecting the bed spring frame sections with each other in the rear of the pivot connecting the firstnamed bed spring section with the said posts, connected links of which one is pivoted on the said foot and seat support and the other is pivotally connected with the other bed spring frame section, and a catch pivoted on the said other bed spring frame section and adapted to engage the said extension connecting the said bed spring frame sections with each other.

11. A convertible bed, comprising a head support, a foot support movable toward and from the said head support and provided at the forward end with posts extending above the top of the foot and seat support, a bed spring frame made in head, middle and foot sections, of which the head and middle sections are pivotally connected with each other and the middle section has its rear end pivotally connected with the said posts, the

14. A convertible bed, comprising a head support, a bed spring frame provided at the forward end with a stud, a bracket attached to the said head support and provided with an angular slot adapted to be engaged by the'said stud, and a dog fulcrumed on the said bracket and provided with an angular slot adapted to be engaged by the said stud, the said slots being inclined in opposite directions and their open ends being adapted to register with each other.
