Description

VAN VANDERBURGH, OF BACON HILL, ASSIGNQR TO HORATIO WARSAW, NEW YORK'.
.NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GRAVES, oE
IMPROVEMENT IN AGITATORS FOR WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,074, dated August 15, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VAN VANDERBURGH, of Bacon Hill, in the county of Saratoga and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Agitator for VVashii1gl\/[achines5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled inthe art to make and use the same,
reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a plan or top view of my improved agita-tor for washing-maehines. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same taken on the plane of the line a' a', Fig. l.
Similar letters ofreference indicate correspon ding parts.
rIhis invention relates to a new rota-ry agitator for washing-machines and wash-boilers, to be used for disturbing the suds and causing them to properly strike the articles to bc cleaned. The invention consists chiefly in providingl said rotary agitator with a projecting ilange or rim and open loops, which produce currents in the water.
A in the drawin g represents a circular disk or plate suspended from a shaft, B, to which it is rigidly or removably affixed in suitable manner, the shaft being suitably hung in the suds-box or boiler. The disk A is made of metal or other suitable material, and perforated, as shown at a a in the drawing, Tubular ribs b b are secured upon the surface of the disk A, radiating from the shaft. These ribs are open at their outer ends and perforated at the sides, or open at their the clothes on the disk and to prevent them from being caught between the edge of the disk and the suds-box. The ilange c will also serve to keep the suds better agitated, as it prevents their rapid escape from the top of the disk. From the inner face of the ilange c project loops d d, which are open at both ends to form countercurrents in the suds-boX, and thereby aid in the operation of washing. The loops d are of suitable size, and four, more or less, of them inay be employed. Y
I am aware that perforated rotary disks in washing-machines, combined with radial hollow and perforated arms, are not new to the publie, and therefore I have no desire to claim these as part of my invention.
What I do claim, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
In combination with perforated disk and perforated hollow arms, the upwardly-projectin g rim c, arranged around the circumference of the disk, as and for the purpose specified.
VAN VANDERBURGH. Witnesses ARCHIBALD S. WAsIIBURN, GEORGE WAsHBURN.
