Description
ITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR-CHECKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,063, dated August l5, 1871.
a longitudinal and central section of 1ny said in Vention, Fig. 3, a longitudinal and central section of a door-check, as heretofore made.
My invention relates to that class of doorchecks which has an India-rubber pad or cush ion projecting from its outer end, the same, when used, being affixed to the side of a room, in such position as to impinge against the door when the latter is thrown back, in order to prevent the noise and injury which might otherwise arise by the concussion of the door against the mopboard or` wall ofthe room. My invention is found in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the device or door-check, as hereinafter described-that is to say, it consists of a iianged elastic cushion, against which the door is to impinge when thrownopen and back; a knob, having cylindrical holes at its opposite ends, of diii' erent diameters, to receive the said tlanged' cushion, and a plug or base, which contains a screw, by which the device is to be affixed to the side of a room, such plug being inserted in the larger axial hole ofthe knob, and serving to retain the said cushion in its normal position therein.
In carrying out the same, I form the rubber cushion A of a semi-spherical shape and with an chamber extending nearly through the said part, as seen in Fig. 2. The rubber cushion is to be inserted in this chamber, and is to be pushed up through it, and so that its convex en d shall project irom the end of the part 13;' the iiange a of the cushion impinging against the bottom of the chamber limiting its degree of protrusion. The part C has its upper portion made of a size to lill the said chamber b. From the base of the said part C, and axially thereof', a hole, having the same diameter of the shank of the screw D, is bored, such hole extending about one-third through it, while from the upper end of the said part another hole, d, is made, having the same width as thehead of the said screw, such hole communicting with the shank-hole and forming a prolongation thereof. The screw is next introduced into the top of the said part C and its head forced down into contact with the bottom of the chamber c, the entering end ofthe screw proj ccting beyond the base, as seen in the drawing. A cylinder, F, of wood, is next inserted in the hole d and forced down upon the head of the screw, such plug or cylinder entirely iilling the said hole. The part C is next forced into the chamber b and iirmly glued therein. The article in this state is complete and ready for use.
I do not claim, broadly, a door-check havin g an elastic or rubber cushion extending from one of its ends, as I am aware that such is not new.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and as an improved article of manufacture, is-
My said improved door-check, as composed of the flanged elastic cushion A, the tubular knob B having openings at its opposite ends of different diameters, and the plug or base part C containing the screw D, and serving to retain the cushion in its normal position, the whole being constructed and arranged substantially as shown and described. l
