HENRY R. DUDLEY, 0F BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR 0F O1\TEHALF T0 DAVID W. THOMPSON, 0F BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
TURN-DOWN COLLAR.
Application filed September 23, 1914.
To all lLo/om it may concern.'
Be it known that I, HENRY It. DUDLEY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements; in Turn-Down Collars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a turn-down apparel collar adapt-ed to permit a four-in-hand necktie to slip freely endwise between the neck band and the turndown or outer portion of t-he collar so that the tie may be adjusted endwise in knotting it without the usual difliculty due to the binding of the collar on the tie at the back portion of the wearers neck.
The invention consists in the i1nprove ments which I will now proceed to describe and claim.
0f the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification: Figure 1 represents a view of the inner side of a turn-down collar embodying my invention; Fig. 2 represents a side view of the outer side of the collar, a part of the turndown portion being broken away; Fig. 3 yrepresents an enlarged section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. si repre sents a sectional view showing the parts of the collar in the relative positions they occupy during the laundrying operation; Fig.
` portion of the tab which is then the lower' 5 represents a view similar' to Fig. et, showing the tab hereinafter referred to bent outwardly and downwardly from the line of its attachment to the neck band of the collar.
The same reference characters indicate the same or similar parts in all the views.
In the drawings, 12 represents the neck band portion of aturn-down collar, and 13 represents the outer or downwardly turned portion of the collar, sometimes called the iiap portion, the collar being, excepting as hereinafter specified, of ordinary or any suitable construction, and the neck band portion being provided with the usual end buttonholes 111 and central buttonhole 15.
In carrying out my invention I apply to the neck band 12 the tab 16 preferably of fabric similar to that used for the neck band. Said tab is narrower than the neck band and is i'irst laid flat upon the latter in the position indicated by Fig. il. That edge Specification of Letters Patent.

edge portion is then united to the neck band by a. longitudinal row of stitches 17 extending lengthwise of the band and about midway between its upper and lower edges and close to the said lower edge portion of the tab. The width of the tab is such that its free or unattached portion extends from the stitches 17 nearly to the upper edge of the neck band 12, its attached edge portion being considerably above the rear buttonhole 15.
rIhe tab occupies the position shown by Fig. 1lwhile the collar is being laundried, so that the side of the tab which is outermost is rendered smooth and anti-frictional by the laundrying iron and the starch with which the collar is treated. After the laundiving operation the free portion of the tab is bent outwardly and downwardly along a. line close to and parallel with the stitches 17, as indicated by Figs. 3 and 5, to form a tie-guiding fold located below the upper edge of the neck band 12 and below the usual fold of the collar, and a tie-guiding lip projecting downwardly from said tie-guiding fold between the parts 12 and 13 of the collar. The said tie-guiding fold and lip prevent a necktie 18 from rising to contact with the fold of the collar. The side of the tab on which the anti-frictional face is formed by the laundrying operation constitutes a continuous antifrictional tie-guiding surface which bears on the upper edge and outer side of the necktie when the tab is adjusted for use, so that the necktie is adapted to slip freely endwise while in contact with the tab.
The tab 16 constitutes a flexible guard rib carried by the neck band portion as a permanent part thereof, said rib being arranged intermediate the height of the neck band portion, and spaced a substantial distance from the upper and lower edges thereof. In other words, the said flap or guard rib is located a substantial distance between the line of connection between the band portion and the flap portion where the fold of the collar is made and also located a substantial distance above the lower edge of the neck band portion.
IIaving described my invention, I claim:
1. A turn-down collar having a tie-guiding tab adapted to lie flat against the upper portion of the outer surface of the neck band and attached to the latter by a longitudinal row of stitches passing through that edge portion of the tab which is the lower edge portion when the tab is fiat, the exposed side of the fiat tab being adapted to be rendered antifrictional by an iron during the laundrying operation, the tab being bent along a line close to and parallel with said stitches to form a tie-guiding fold located below and parallel with the fold of the collar, and adapted to prevent the tie from rising to Contact with the collar fold, and a tie-guiding lip projecting downwardly from the tie-guiding fold between the neck band and the outer portion of the collar, the said fold and lip having a continuous antifrictional tie-guiding surface formed by the antifrictional laundried side of the flat tab.
2. In a turned-down collar, a neckband portion and a flap portion, a flexible guard-y rib carried by the neckband portion as a permanent part thereof and arranged intermediate the height of said neckband portion and spaced a substantial distance from the upper and lower edges thereof.
3. In a folding collar, a neckband portion, a iap portion, a flexible guard-rib permanently connected to the neckband portion and at the outer side thereof, said guard-rib being located a substantial distance below the line of connection between the band portion and the flap portion where the fold is made and also located a substantial distance above the lower edge of said neckband portion.
In testimony whereof I have afiXed my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY R. DUDLEY.
