To @ZZ whom t may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES WV. BOOTH, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Car-Door Stop and Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combination door stops and fasteners for boX cars.
The object of the invention is to provide a combination door stop and fastener for box cars which shall be reversible, that is which may be used in connectio-n with a door opening either to the right or to the l5 left.
To this end a combination door stop and fastening member of my invention comprises the various features, combination of features and details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring now to the drawing A designates the body portion of a box car, B the car door and C the door stop, as a whole, said door stop comprising end section C1 made of wood and an intermediate metal section C2, preferably made of cast-iron. As
shown, the ends of the wood sections C1 of the door stop are rigidly connected to the intermediate metal section C2, the ends of said wood sections being preferably mortised into the endsof said metal section G2 and being secured thereto by means of bolts c, which, as shown, are the bolts whereby the adjacent ends of the wood and metal sections of door stop are secured to the body portion of the car.
In order to reduce the weight of the metal section C2 of the door stop said door stop is preferably recessed on its rear side, as shown at c1, and for reasons presently apis formed through the metal section C2 of the door stop, said opening c2 being located centrally of said door stop, and being substantially symmetrical onboth sides of the transverse center thereof. Formed in the outer side of said metal section C2 at the ends. of said slot c2 are recesses o3 which are adapted to receive the heads of bolts c4, which with the bolts c secure the metal section C2 of the door stop to the body portion A of the car. Said recesses c3 are only slightly larger than the heads of the bolts c4r so that the sides of said recess will closely embrace the heads of said bolts, thus securing said bolts against turning and eectually preventing the removal of the instal sections C2 of said door stop from the outside of the car. The metal section C2 of said door stop, is reinforced and strengthened by means of a bracket D rigidly connected thereto and preferably formed integral therewith, the outer end of said bracket being provided with a bolt hole to provide for bolting it to the side of the car body.
Preferably, also the metal stop section C2 comprises a lip E, preferably formed integral therewith, which projects inwardly from said door stop so as to engage the edge of the door as said door is closed and to guide and hold said door` iirmly against the side of the car, when said door is in closed position. As shown, also, the metal stop section C2 is utilized as the base or support of one member of the door fastener, said stop section C2, as it relates to fastening means for the door, being so constructed andv arranged that it may be used with either end of said metal stop section C2 uppermost, thereby rendering said stop reversible and adapting it for use with doors which open away from said stop either to the right or to the left. As shown, also, the structure of said metal stop section C2, as it relates to the fastening means, is of the type in which the locking bolt is confined and is freely movable endwise in suitable guide bearings formed in lugs which project outwardly from the front side of said metal stop section C2, and is adapted to be inserted into its bearings in said lugs from the back side of said metal stop section through a suitable hole or opening formed therein.
As shown, the locking pin 1 is mounted so as to be freely movable endwise in guide bearings formed in a center lug 2 and in the lower of two similar hasp lugs 3 and 4L, which are symmetrically located on opposite sides of the center lug 2 at a distance therefrom and in line therewith.
As shown, the bearings for the locking pin l in the lugs 3 and t consist of holes 5 formed therein to which the body portion of the locking pin 1 is fitted so as to be freely movable therein, and the bearing for the said locking pin in the lug 2 is formed by 'the outer section of a slot 6 in said lug,
4 said slot 6 forming a continuation of the slotted opening c2 in the body portion of said metal stop section C2 and, with said slot c2 provides a continuous opening extending from the back side of said metal stop section to the outer end of said slot 6.
The bearings for the locking pin 1 in the center lug 2 is formed by the outer section of the slot 6, said locking pin when inserted into its bearing in said center lug being confined therein by projections 7 formed on opposite sides of the slot 6 and which extend inwardly toward each other, and the adjacent ends thereof being separated from each other by a space which is smaller than the normal thickness of said bolt 1. To provide for inserting the locking pin l through the opening c2 and the slot 6 past the projections 7 into its bearing in the center lug 2, notches 8 are formed in opposite sides of the locking pin 1 which are somewhat wider than the width of said projections and are slightly deeper than the height thereof, so that when said notches 8 are brought into register with the said projections 7, said locking pin will be narrower than the space between the ends of said projections 7, thus permitting said locking pin to be inserted past the projec tions 7 into its bearing in the outer end of the slot 6.
Disengagement of the locking pin 1 from its bearings in the center lug 2 and in either of the hasp lugs 3 or 4 is prevented by a head or hook 9 formed on the upper end of the locking pin, contact of which with the lug 2 limits the downward movement of said pin, and the hasp lugs 3 and 4C, which are of such size and are so positioned relatively to the center lug 2 that the lug 3 or 1, between which and said lug 2 the headed end of said bolt is positioned, will form a stop which will limit the upward movement of said locking pin and will prevent its withdrawal from its bearing in said lug 2.
The opening c2 is made of such length that the distance from the end of said opening to a line extending through the centers of the projections 7 will be slightly greater than the distance from the extreme upper end of the locking pin 1 to a line passing through the centers of the recesses 8 in said locking pin. Also, the locking pin 1 is designed and adapted to be inserted into its bearings from the rear side of the stop section C2 before said stop section is secured in position in the car body at the side of the door opening. Vith the described construction, when the locking bolt 1 and the securing bolts c4 are inserted into position in the metal stop section C2, the heads of the bolts o4 will close the ends of the slotted opening c2 and will thus prevent the locking bolt l from passing into said opening c2 after said metal stop section has been secured to the car, which would render it impossible to operate the same.
As shown, the locking pin 1 is longer than the opening c2 and to insert said pin through said opening c2 into its guide bearings it is necessary to irst insert the small end of said locking pin through said opening 2 a suiiicient distance to bring the recesses 8 in said pin into register with the projections 7 on the sides of the slot 6, which will permit said pin to pass said projections into engagement with its guide bearing in the lug 2 and the headed end of said locking pin to clear the end of the opening c2, all as heretofore described.
The described manner of inserting the locking pin 1 through the slotted opening c2 past the portions 7 on the side of the slot 6 and into engagement with its guide bear ing in the outer end of the slot 6 is illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawing, which shows the pin in dotted lines in two positions, designated, respectively, 11 and 12, 11 showing the position of the locking pin at .the beginning of the operation of inserting said locking pin through the opening 02, and 12 showing the position of the locking pin when it has been inserted through the opening 02 a suflicient distance to bring the recesses 8 into register with the projection 7. The locking pin 1 is shown in full lines in engagement with its guide bearings.
Thehasp lugs 3 and 4L correspond to the staples of an ordinary hasp and staple lock, and with my improved combination door stop and fastener, the fastener hasp is secured to the car door A substantially in line with the lower hasp lug 3, in such position that it may be readily engaged therewith.
In locking the door, the locking bolt 1 is lifted so that its lower end will be above the hasp lug 3, the hasp 10 ,is then placed over the lug 3 and the locking bolt 1 is lowered or dropped into engagement with the guide bearing 5 in said lug.
To provide for sealing the lock or fasten-s ing` means, a slotted opening 11 is formed in the locking pin 1 in such position that it will be below one or the other of the lugs in which said locking pin is confined and in such proximity thereto that when said locking pin is raised, the sealing means will contact with the adjacent lug before said locking pin is raised a suficient distance to disengage it from its bearing in the hasp lug 3 and to permit the door hasp 10 from peing moved out of engagement with said In the preferable construction shown, the sealing means for my improved combination door stop and fastener comprises similar f lugs 12 and 13 which are arranged in pairs on opposite sides of the center lug 2 and at opposite sides oit the opening 02, said lugs 12 and 13 being preferably formed integral with said lug f2 and extending lengthwise of the slotted opening c2. Formed through said lugs 1Q. and 13 are openings 14: and 15, the relative positions of said openings being suoli that when said metal stop section is secured to the car body, the lower of said openings will register with the opening 11 in the locking pin 1 when said locking pin is in full locking position, as shown in full lines in Fig. 1 in which the openings 14 are in register with the opening 11 in said locking pin 1.
The construction shown is adapted for use with the familiar form of car door seal consisting of a thin metal band adapted to be inserted through the registered openings 11 and 1A and the ends thereof connected by means of a lead or other soft metal seal. ln the drawing, in which l have shown a seal of this character, 16 designates the metal band inserted through the openings 11 and 14, and 17 the seal which connects the ends of said band.
Obviously, by substituting for the metal stop section or body portion C2, a iiat web or plate, a reversible door fastening member would be provided adapted for use with any usual form of door stop.
I claim 1. A locking member for car door fasteners, comprising a base provided with an opening which extends through the same from back to front, a lug on the front side of said base which extends across the opening therein and is provided with a slot which forms an extension of the opening through said base, a locking bolt, a projection on a side of the slot in said lug which defines a bearing for said locking bolt at the outer end of said slot, a hasp lug on said base provided with a bearing for the locking bolt, said locking bolt being provided with a recess to permit its insertion from the back oi said base through the opening therein, past the projection on the side of the slot in said slotted lug into engagement with its bearing in said lug, withdrawal of said locking bolt from its bearing in said slotted lng being prevented by contact of rigid parts of said bolt and base, substantially as described.
2. A locking member for car door fasteners, comprising a base provided with an opening which extends through the same from back to liront, a lug on the front side of said base which extends across the opening therein and is provided with a slot which forms an extension of the opening through said base, a locking bolt, a projection on a side of the slot in said lug which defines a bearing for said locking bolt at the outer end of' said slot, a hasp lug on said base provided with a bearing for the locking bolt, said locking bolt being provided with a recess to permit its insertion :trom the back of said base through the opening therein, past the projection on the side of the slot in said slotted lug into engagement with its bearing in said lug, withdrawal of said locking bolt from its bearing in said slotted lug in one direction being prevented by Contact of the head of vsaid bolt with said slotted lug and in the opposite direction by contact of the headed end of said bolt with a rigid part of said base, substantially as described.
3. A combination door stop and fastening member for box cars, comprising a body portion provided with an opening extending through the same from back to front, a lug on the front side of said body portion which extends across the opening therein and is provided with a slot which forms an eXtension of the opening through said body portion, a locking bolt, projections on the sides of the slot in said lug, which deiine a bearing :for said locking bolt at the outer end of said slot, hasp lugs at opposite sides of said slotted lug provided with bearings for the locking bolt, said locking bolt being provided with recesses to permit its insertion from the back side of said body portion through the opening therein, past the projections on the sides of the slot in said intermediate lug into engagement with its bearing in said lug, a head on said loclring bolt, withdrawal of said locking bolt :from its bearing in said slotted lug in one direction being prevented by contact of the head of said bolt with said slotted lug and in the opposite direction by contact or the headed end of said bolt with the hasp lug between which and said slotted lug the headed end of said bolt is positioned, substantially as described.
