Description

fig. 1' PATENTE AUG 15 18V-:L

' Mmmm:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN EGG AND FRUIT-CARRIERS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,988, dated August 15, 1871.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH TAYLOR CORN- EonTE, of Kansas City, inthe county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a new and uset'ul Improvement in Egg and Fruit-Packing Gase 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part or' this spcciica-tion.
My invention relatos to egg and fruit-cases constrlufted of paper or liexible material, and consists in the improvement hereinafter fully described and clearly specified in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents a vertical cross-section through the case, taken on the line Fig. 2 is a top or plan View.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the box, or the sides and ends of the case, (for it is made without bottom or top,) in which I construct the cells of the case. B represents the cells or compartments. rlhere may be holes through the sides or ends of the case, and also through the cell-walls for Ventilating the Case, as seen in Fig. I; but I do not coniine inyseli' to any particular mode of ventilation. The cells B are formed of one or more strips, C, of paper, card-boardor any other material which may be bent to the required shape, of a width to correspond with the width of the sides of the case. Each cell is formed of two semicircles, and each row of two corrugated lengths of the strips O. In this example of my invention the cells of' the entire case are formed of a single corrugated strip of pasteboard or paper. It may be of wood, with the corrugation formed in a mold, when the Wood is properly prepared 5 but I do not confine myself to making all the cells of a case of a single piece, yet it may readily be'done with paper board, so that the cells will retain their shape and be suiiciently rigid to protect the contents.
In packing and transporting the cases I start on a platform or bottom, and place the cases on top of each other with a plate or sheet of stii' paper board or of wood between the boxes, the arrangement being such cases. No weight is allowed to bear upon the fruit or other article contained in the cells. These division-plates m ay be perforated with holes, so that there may be a circulation of air upward through the cases. By this mode oi' packing, each egg or piece of fruit or other article is kept separate from the rest and subject to no pressure.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The series of cells B, formed of ilexible and corrugated material O arranged in a case, A, as and for the purpose speciiiec.
