Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. t8, i916.,
Application led May 10, 1915. Serial 310,213,979.
To @ZZ whom it may concern Be it known that l, llnwziun D. VARNUM, a. citizen oli the V1United States, residing at San Dietro. in the county of San Diego and State or" California, have invented certain new and useful Improv nents in Oil-Burners,.ot' which the it'ollowingis a specification.
My invention relates to oil burners in which oil and water are mixed for use as a iuel more particularly crude oil or distillate.
The objects of my invention are, first and primarily, iniproven'ients' in crude oil burners, over iny application of January l, 1915, Serial Number d-3l, principally to make the lnlrner inore eliicient and durahle and-to render its feed portion liable to clog. l
`With these and other objects in view as will appear` hereinafter iny invention consists of certain novel features of construe tion, conil'iination and arrangement of parts as will hereinafter be described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters o'lf reference thereon which torni a part of this specification, in which:
Figure l, ofthe drawing,r shows a sectional View ot' my burner complete, and F 2.1. a top view olf the oil feed cone.
vThe burner plate lv iced cone 2, water feed pipe 8. hood and oil conductor l, fuel feed piece 5, tl-.uue control (3, oil pipe 7, air intake 8, support f), hood l0 and inain hood ll, constitute the principal parts of 4my burner.
rlfhe air intake S a bell shaped casting' open at the top end and it is provided with lugs 8 for supporting it on the support i). Upon the top edge ot this air intake piece 8, is mounted the hui-ner plate 1, which is provided with a hole "l and a shoulder lb to set over the top and when pressed down forms atight fit thereon. the shoulder lb preventing' the oil :troni running' toward the center of the burner plate l. rl`he support 9 is a spider with extended arms 9 and it is screwed onto the water feed pipe 3, which is in two parts and connected together by said support. 4 inside this water pipe is mounted the oil pipo 'Z which is a smaller pipe. Upon the upper end of this oil pipe 7 is screwed the 'fuel feed piece 5 which is provided with a partition 5a and with a. recess in its upper and lower ends and the up er end is provided with a plurality of holes 5b for oil feed and in the lower end thereof with a plurality of holes 5 for the water feed., This feed piece is threaded and screws into the end of the feed cone 2 which is threaded in its lower end adapted to screw on to the top end of the water pipe 3. This cone 2 is provided with a` plurality of slots 2a therein extending from its apex to near the outer edge and each slot is vprovided with a pipe 2b for conducting the fuel to the. burner plate l. The outer edge -is provided with a. projection 2C, adapted for the llame guide ring 6, which is a ring of approximately the saine diameter as the burner plate l. Over this cone 2 and screwed on the feed piece 5, is the hood and oil conductor 4,' which fits closely to the cone allowing; the water to run down over the cone beneathsaid hood and through the pipes 2" to the burner plate l. Sonie distance from the center .thereof7 and on the top end of the steed piece 5 is the hood l0 which extends down over the hood and oil conductor 4,
some distance and mounted on the plate 6- and covering the iteed parts is the main hood 11.
It is obvious that with this `construction there is provided an oil burner for burning a mixture of oil and water in which the oil and water are thoroughly distributed upon a plate upon which the mixture is burned; that the two plates. l and 6, spaced apart provide means for guiding the flame; that the feed piece 5. provides means for separately distributing the oil and water which are kept separate by ineens of the hood and oil conductor d but finally uniting toward the outer edge ot' the iced cone- 2 and then conducted to the plate l where it is burned between the plates L and 6, the draft comingr up through the piece 8. v
Having thus described my invention what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: l
l. In an oil burner, the combination of an air intake piece, vater and oil feed pipes extending up through said air intake piece, a burner plate mounted on said air intake piece7 a cone for distributing oil and water onto said burner plate, and means for sepaw rately conducting the oil4 and water to said cone.- j v 2. In an oil burner, the combination of an air intake piece, a burner. plate mounted thereon, `water and oil pipes extendngup through said air intake piece, a cone protra ineans in its periphery for dis.`
` tributingpil'and Water on-said burner plate, means for separately. conducting Waterv and weil tos'aid' cone, another plate spaced aparty 'above 'saidburner plate, and a hood coveringl rhe central 'part of said plate, said cone, and separating means.
-Inpaifilfburner the eombination of' an `hrough vsaid air intake piece, means mount- "ed on the 'upper end of said Water' and oil pipes for distributing Water and oilv onto Saidburner plate, and another plate-spaced 'apartaboye said'burner plate.
'airintake piece, 'a burner plate mounted. thereon, Water'and oil pipes extending up4 y.41.Inan oil burner the combination `of an the watersupply pipe, a feed piece mounted inthe upper end of said cone, and means for keeping the oil `and Water separate during a portion4 of its course to the burner 25 plate.
5. In an ,poil burner the combination of' an' air intake piece, a' burner plate mounted thereon, 'Water and voil pipes extending up through said air intake piece, a cone pro vided .With-a plurality of grooves in itsup: per surfacemounted on the upper end 0L the Water supply pipe, a feed'piece mountt ed in the upper endof said cone, means for keeping the oil and -Water separate duringa 35 portion 'of its course to the burner plate, and hood means for'covering the vfeed mecha-i msm.
` In testimony whereof, IA have hereunto vset` my hand at San Diego, California, this 23rd 4o day of April, 1915.
