POTATO-KNIFE AND HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed December 2, 1915. serial No. 64,734.
of this kind which may be positioned in an accessible manner with respect to the op.- erator. 7
Another object of the invention is to pro-' vide novel means whereby the knife holding table may be disposed at'various angles.
A further object of the invention is to provide novel means whereby the angle between the knife and the surface of the table may be changed.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a device of the type described, acombined means whereby the knife is held at different angles with respect to the table, and whereby the table may be held at different angles with respect to the horizontal.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
I With the above and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combina- 35 tion and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing :-Figure 1 shows the invention in side elevation; Fig. 2 is an end elevation; Fig. 3 is a section taken approximately on the line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a top plan of the foot plate.
In carrying out the present invention there is provided a base 1 which may be a box, a bench or other object upon which the operator may sit, the operator ordinarily straddling the base 1.
The invention comprises a support embodying a foot plate 2 provided with openings 3 adapted to receive securing elements 5.5 (not shown) whereby the foot plate 2 may be assembled with the base 1 near to one end of the base. The footplate 2 carries an upstanding lug a enlarged at its forward end as shown at 5 to form inclined shoulders 6L The invention includes a standard which preferably but not necessarily comprises spaced strips 7, the lower ends of which bear against opposite faces ofthe lug 4:. A combined clamping and pivot element pref.- erably in the form of a bolt and nut structure 8 passes through the lower ends of the strips 7 and through the lug 4.
The invention comprises a table composed preferably of a pair of angle members 9,
embodying horizontal, oppositely projecting flanges 11 and vertical, depending flanges 10. The ends of the strips 7 which go to make up the standard, lie against the outer faces of the vertical flanges 10, and through the upper ends of the strips 7 which go to make up the standard and through the vertical flanges of the angle members 9 passes a combined clamping and pivot element, preferably in the form of a bolt 12. The bolt 12 passes through the lower end of a blade 14, the lower end of the blade being located between the vertical flanges 10 of the angle members 9.. The blade 14 preferably is sharpened as shown at 15 on both of its longitudinal edges, so that the blade may be reversed, the blade being sharpened also upon its end, if desired, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 ofthe drawings;- The anglemem bers 9' which go to make up the table are connected at their ends by means of a bolt 16 or the like, passing through the vertical flanges 10 of the angle members.
In practical operation, the standard com prising the strips 7, assumes the inclined position shown in Fig. 1, and projects beyond one end of the base 1, the strips 7 abutting against the shoulders 6, to prevent a downward swinging movement of the strips 7. However, it is possible by tightening up the bolt 8 to hold the strips 7 in a position approaching the vertical more closely than indicated in Fig. 1. The table embodying the angle members 9 may be tilted on the bolt 12 until the table assumes the desired angle with respect to the horizontal, whereupon the bolt 12 may be tightened up. The bolt 16 serves to prevent relative movement between the angle members 9 and maintains the horizontal flanges 11 of the angle members in a common plane. The blade 14 may be tilted to assume any desired angle, the blade swinging on. the bolt 12-. However, after the bolt 12 has been tightened up, the blade 14: will remain in its adjusted position, being bound between the depending, vertical flanges 10 of the angle members 9.
In practical operation, the operator sits astride of the base 1 and slides the potato which is to be out along the tabledefined by the horizontal flanges 11 of the angle members 9, the'potato coming into contact with the blade 14 and being severed thereby. After the potato has'been cut to a suflicient extent the parts of the potato may be permitted to drop downwardly off the table,
into a suitable receptacle (not shown), it being observed that, owing to the fact that the standard composed of the strips 7 projects beyond one end of the base 1, the operation above described may be carried out readily.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is i V 1. In a device of the class described, a base having a smooth upper surface adapted to serve as aseat for an operator straddling the base; an inclined standard secured at its inner end to the base and projecting outwardly beyond one end of the base, the space below the outwardly projecting end of the standard being open and unencumbered; a table mounted on the outer end of the standard and having a flat and unencumbered supper face; and a blade projecting upwardly from the table.
2. In a device of the class described, a supporting structure; an inclined standard projecting from the supporting structure; a table carried by the upper end of the standard; a blade mounted to swing in a substantially vertical plane with respect to the table, for adjustment; and means for holding the blade rigidly in adjusted positions with re- I spect to the table. 4
3. In a device of the class described,' ;a{
supporting structure; a relatively fined standard projecting from the supporting structure; a table mounted to tilt on the up-' per end of the standard; a movable blade upstanding from'the table; and means for holding both the blade and the table fixed with respect to the standard.
4 In a device of theclass described, a
standard; a table mounted to tilt on the upper end of the standard; a blade mounted to swing in a substantially vertical plane with respect to the tabl'e; and a common 5. In a device of the class described, a
table composed of a pair of angle member's embodying vertical and horizontal flanges;
a connection uniting the vertical flanges of the angle members; a blade havingits lower 7 end engaged between the vertical flanges of the angle members;a standard; and a. combined clamping and pivot device uniting the 1 upper end of the standard, the vertical flanges of the angle members and theblade In'testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signa- V ture in the presence ofa witness.
