Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES P. BAILEY, OF ZANESVILLE, OHIO.
RAILROAD-CAR SEAT.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 11,772, dated October 10, 1854.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, CHARLES P. BAILEY, of Zanesville, in the county of Muskingum and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reversible CarSeats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part thereof, and which represents a perspective view of the seat.
I am aware that a chair has been made, with the back, seat, and foot rest, so hinged together, as to adapt themselves to the p0sition of the person occupying it, whether sitting erect, or reclining. But this is not applicable for car seats, because the back cannot be reversed, and if even this could be done, the scat is not susceptible of a motion both ways from a point drawn through its center, vertically. Such a chair I lay no claim to whatever.
The nature of my invention relates to the so hinging of the back, seat, and feet rests, of a car seat, as that the back may be reversed, and the seat and feet rests swing both ways of a vertical line drawn through its center, so as to make it equally epplicable as a seat, without regard to which end of the car goes foremost.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawing.
A, A, represent the supports of the seat,
which may be permanently attached to the car. To these supports are pivoted at 1,1,1, &c., the four bars B, B, B (one not being seen). These bars B, are connected at their tops respectively at each end of the seat, by a rail C, which may serve as an arm sup` port-said rail being connected thereto by pins 2, Q, so as to make a free joint. The bars and rails thus connected, admits of the free swinging of said bars, but always with a parallel motion, so that the foot piece not in immediate use, is drawn in under the seat and out of the way. The seat D, is pivoted to the bars B, at 3 both front and rear, the
fulcra of the bars B, being at l, keeps the seat and arm rests, parellel to each other, as one moves forward and the other back, and are always in a horizont-al plane, as they should be to make the seat perfect, and prevent the occupier from slipping down.
E, E, aretwo connecting straps or pieces, pivoted by one 0f their ends to the back F, and by the other ends to the arms rests C, and the bottom part of the back, is furnished with a rod 4, the ends of which drop into recesses 5 at each edge of the seat, and the back swings in between `the bars B, and is reversed without turning it upside down, which is desirable, as when the top of the back becomes the bottom part and vice versa, the dust and dirt which gathers on the bottom, when the seat is reversed brings it up to the head rest.
The occupant can by merely throwing back his body cause the seat to conform to any desirable or comfortable position. And the back may be reversed and the same re` sult in every particular attained, thus making the seat perfectly adaptable to cars, either end of which may go foremost. The back must of course befurnitured, or cushioned on both sides.
Having thus fully described the nature of my invention, I would state that I do not claim an easy chair having a self adapting position to the incumbent, as this has been done before, but
That I do claim as of my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The so hinging together of the back, seat, and feet" rests of a car seat, as that the back may be reversed, and the seat and feet rests swing both ways of a vertical line drawn through their centers, for the purpose of forming a self adjusting seat, applicable alike to the car, whichever endmay go foremost, substantially as set forth.
