To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLIFFORD Y. GULLION, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Hamilton, in the county of Marion and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guards; and I do herebydeclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in tongue and neck yoke guards and has for its primary, object to provide an improved attachment for tongues, whereby the same may be readily connected with aneck yoke to properly support the forward or free end of the tongue in position.
The invention has for another object to provide an improved pole attachment of this character which will prevent the neck yoke ring from slipping from the end of the pole.
The invention has for a still further object to generally improve and simplify the construction and operation of devices of this character and increase the efiiciency thereof and provide a connection which will be strong and durable as well 'as highly efiicient in use, and :still cheap to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in cer-. tain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which a Figure 1 is a side elevation of a' vehicle tongue with my invention applied thereto, Fig. 2 is a detail elevation of the forward end of said tongue'with the outer end of my attachment in section, and Fig. 3 is a transverse detail section on the plane of line 3-3 of Fig.1.
Referring in detail to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates atongue of the form tapering toward its forward or free end and having its forward circular edge 2 beveled, while the downwardly and forwardly inclined holdback ring 3 is formed around said tongue 1 inwardly of the forward end there- Specification of Letters Patent.

My invention consists, however, of a rearwardly inclined bar 4 upon the forward end of which is formed a ring 5 which extends angularly from said forward end of the bar 4 and is of substantially diamond shape in cross section so as to provide an inner beveled edge 6 for engagement against the beveled forward circular edge 2 of the tongue 1, so that inward movement of the ring 5 upon the tongue 1 is prevented by the small inner central portion 7 understood that the ring 5 serves also as a protecting means for the forward end of the tongue 1, as the lower portion of said ring 5 will engage the ground or other surface should the forward end of the tongue 1 drop or move downwardly, and thereby prevent the end of the tongue 1 from being damaged.
The inner end of the bar 4 is secured to the tongue 1 rearwardly of the ring3 which serves to hold back the bar 4 and prevent the same from moving off of the forward or free endof the tongue 1, and in order to secure the bar 4 in proper position upon the tongue 1, I have provided a clamping ring consisting of upwardly curved and oppositely directed arms 9 which project from the opposite sides of the upwardly curved rear end 10 of the bar 4 and have their upper ends enlarged, as shown at 11, and provided with suitable openings extending transversely therethrough to receive the securing screws 12. The securing screws 12 are also passed through the lower flattened and enlarged ends 13 of the semi-circular ring section 14 engaged in said enlarged upper ends 11, it being understood'that said enlarged upper ends 11 are bicurcated to receive said enlarged ends 13 of the semicircular ring section 14. It will be seen'that by securing the bar 4 to the tongue 1 rearof said ring 5. It will be arms 9 and semi-circular ring section 14, to
draw the device rearwardly upon the tongue 1 and tighten the ring 5 against the forward end of said tongue 1. It will further be evident that this device may be readily and cheaply manufactured and will be highly eiiicient as well as durable in use, and may be applied to the conventional form of tongues now in general use.
From the foregoing it will be evident that in use the neck yoke is first slipped over the end of the pole in the usual manner and connected thereto in the ordinary way. The ring 5 is then placed in position so that its beveled edge engages the beveled end of the pole and the bar 4 extends rearwardly along the pole and is spaced therefrom, as clearly illustrated. The curved arms 9 of the-upward extension 10 it will'be apparent will engage the pole in the rear of the ring 3 and the clamping section 14 is then placed so as to straddle the poleto the rear of the ring 3 and secured in place by passing the screws or other fastening connections 12 through the apertures provided for that purpose. in
this position it will be apparent that the ring of the neck yoke can not slip from its position on the pole or tongue and permit the tongue to drop into engagement with the ground, thus endangering the vehicle or parts thereof.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of partsmay be made without departing from the spirit and scopeof the invention as claimed or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
WVhat is claimed is .1. The combination with a tongue having.
a beveled outer end and a hold back ring, of a bar, a. ring formed upon the forward end of said bar and engaged against the beveled-end of the'ltongue, an angular extension on the inner end of the bar, curved arms projecting fromthe opposite sides of said extension, a semi-circular ring section engaged around the tongue rearwardly of said hold back ring and means for securing the ends of said semi-circular ring section to the free endsof said arms.
