FRANK PARDEE, OF HAZLETON, PENNSYLVANIA.
SCRAPER FOR CHAIN CARRIERS.
Application filed February 6, 1913, Serial No. 746,600. Renewed February 11, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK PARDEE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Hazleton, county of Luzerne, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scrapers for Chain Carriers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
In a general Way the invention relates to carriers of various kinds and more particularly to that class of carriers or conveyors which are used at coal mines or coal breakers for getting rid of the slate and impurities taken out of the coal after it comes from the mines, and also for conveying the ashes and other refuse by means of an endless chain working on sprocket wheels and propelled by suitable motive power.
More specifically the invention relates to the scraper which works in a runway of trough like formation with flat bottom and upright sides.
The object of the invention is to produce a scraper which can be attached to the chain carrier and held in operative position by a simple device, While permitting attachment and detachment of the scraper without great inconvenience or trouble. V
The invention consists in a scraper stamped and formed from a blank of sheet metal, the scraper being combined with a retaining clevis, and in the features of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out or indicated in and by the claim.
In the drawings Figure 1, is a perspective view of the scraper, retaining clevis, and a portion of the carrier chain. Fig. 2, is a side elevation, partly in section, of the trough or runway showing several scrapers and ref use materials to be conveyed to the dump heap. Fig. 3, is a front elevation of the scraper and its retaining clevis and shows in section, the link to which the scraper is attached. Fig. 4, is an edge view of the scraper showing one end of the retaining clevis, the full link to which the scraper is attached and a broken part of the connecting adjacent links of the chain carrier.
In the drawings A, represents the scraper B, the clevis and O, the chain. In Fig. 2, the trough D, is also shown.
The scraper A, is formed from a blank cut of sheet metal, of a pattern that will Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 28, 1916.
Serial No. 77,791.
give the scraping part a length adapted to the width of the trough across which it eX- tends. The upper part of the blank is some what narrower than the lower part, being meet from the corners a, a, upward. This upper part is also out out in the center so as to straddle a link of the chain C, and on each side of the chain the metal is turned over and forms knuckles a, a, for admitting the longarm I), of the clevis B, which is preferably of a length to permit of its being bent and turned down at b, as seen in Figs. 1, and 3. The short arm 6 of the clevis B,'passes through a knuckle a formed by rolling over some of the metal which is cut to admit the chain C.
The scraper A, may be provided with flanges a a so that when a vertical link of the chain is admitted in the center space the flanges a a bear broadside along a portion of the link which serves to keep the scraper in alinement across the bottom of the trough D. This, however, may be effected by any suitable means integral with either the clevis or the scraperor separate therefrom, but it is desirable to have as few attachments and parts as may be consistent with practical efficiency. The lower knuckle (a, through which the clevis passes and the corners a, a, afford bearings for the clevis, at the back of the scraper, to aid in sustaining the load carried in front of it, as seen in Fig. 2, but the scraper may be connected with the chain and reversed so as to come behind the link if desired. Then the clevis B, is constructed with one long and one short arm, the long arm is bent over, as shown, and this avoids the necessity for extra securing devices in the way of keys, etc, which may, however, be used if preferred.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A scraper for chain carriers, formed of sheet metal having knuckles with space for admitting a link of the chain between them, in combination with a clevis having one long and one short arm, said arms passing through said knuckles, whereby said scraper may be attached to a carrier chain.
