HEMMER FOR SEWING-MACHINES.-
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 21, 1916.
Application filed January 12, 1915. Serial No. 1,786.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM FoRsYTH, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of Belvidere, county of Boone, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hemmers for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hemmcrs for sewing machines, and has for its object the provision of a simple and eflicient construction of this character which may be manufactured very economically.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is an end elevation of a portion of a sewing machine head equipped with a hemmer embodying my invention. Fig. 2, an enlarged top plan view of the hemmer removed, Fig. 3, a section taken on line 33 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4, a section taken on line 44 of Fig. 2.
The preferred form of construction. as illustrated in the drawing, comprises a plate 5 having a bore extending inwardly and downwardly from the front edge through the bottom thereof. Said bore is formed bv first passing a small drill therethrough and then counterboringthe front portion of the bore thus formed with a larger drill. This forms the bore into an inner smaller portion 6 and an outer larger portion 7 merging into portion 6 conically, as shown. and the metal at one 'side of the bottom of the forward portion of the bore is removed form ing a longitudinal slot extending into said bore at one side and leaving a lip 7 extending outwardly from the other side to turn under the edge of the hem as will be readily understood. A pin 8 is secured to the front portion of the plate 5 on the same side of the bore as lip 7', and'is rebent and extended axially into the bore in said plate, as shown.
This furnishes a simple and efiicient hemmer wllilich may be manufactured very economica y.
A needle notch 9 is formed in one side of the plate 5 perpendicular to the body thereof and extended inwardly just beyond the center to accommodate the needle and permit the passage of the thread. By forming the notch per endicularly, the same may be formed very economically although the thread is then only retained by the needle.
At its rearward end, the plate 5 is provided with an upwardly and rearwardly extending bifurcated flange 10 by means of which the same may be secured to the presser bar 11 of the machine, as illustrated in Fig. 1, and utilized in the usual manner.
lVhile I have illustrated and described the prefered form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my inventionwhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A hemmer for sewing machines comprising a plate having a bore extending inwardly and downwardly from the front edge through the bottom thereof, there being a longitudinal slot extending from the outer portion of the bottom of said plate into said bore at one side thereof, a lip being formed on the other lower side of said bore; and a pin secured to the forward portion of said plate on the same side of the bore as said lip and extending axially into said bore, substantially as described.
2. A hemmer for sewing machines comprising a plate having a straight cylindrical bore extending inwardly and downwardly from the front edge through the bottom thereof, the outer portion of said bore being larger than the inner and joined thereto by a smooth conical surface, there being a axially into said bore beyond said conical 10 surface, substantially as described.
In testirnony whereof I have signed my name to this specificatlon in the presence of longitudinal slot extending from the outer portion of the bottom of said plate into said bore at one side thereof, a lip being formed on the other side of said bore extending two subscribing'witnesses.
transversely to a point adjacent the middle portion of the bore; and a pin secured to the forward portion of said plate on the same side of the bore as said lip and extending WILLIAM FORSYTH.
