To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES DEMPORT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Solvay, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Covering Earthenware Cocks with Lead, of which the following is a specification.-
This invention relates to improvements in apparatus for coating or covering ear-them ware cocks with lead.
The various features and parts of the invention will' be understood from the de-- tailed description which follows, and by reference to the accompanying. drawing in which- Figure 1 is a front-side elevation of the complete device ready for operation. Heretofore, in the manufacture of certain acids, such as nitric and sulfuric acids, lead pipes have been employed for conducting the acids, and in order to be able to controlthe flow of the acids to and from the said pipes, earthenware valves or cocks are em-- ployed, the lead and the earthenware being the only convenient and safe materials, which are not attackedor destroyed bythe acids. I
Inorder to couple orc'onnect the earthen;- ware cocks with the lead pipes, the ends of the lead pipe sections are expanded-by suit able means, particularly by heating the pipes sufficiently toallow the threaded ends of the cocks to be inserted, and securely held in place. This method of attaching the cooks to lead pipes, has always been a tedious, expensive and slow job, and owing to the fragile nature of the earthenware cocks, and the force required to make the said connections, many of the cocks are broken, which entails another large and us less expense. Furthermore, after the ends of the cooks are i 'ise'rted in the lead pipes sleeve or jacket also composed of lead, which generally over-laps the ends of the lead pipes at the opposite sides of the plug of the cock. To properly apply these jackets it requires considerable time, and besides the leadmust be burned, so as to make the joints between the jacket and the ends of the pipe acid tight.
My invention has for its object to provide suitable molds, in which the earthenware cocks are adjustably disposed, and then to pour into said molds molten lead for casting leaden shells or jackets upon and around the Whole cock at a single operation.
A detail description of my improved apparatus follows:
In the drawing, 2 and 2 represent the halves or sections of a split-mold, which are preferably made of suitable metal, as cast iron, or steel, and having hollow sides, which when the sections are placed together, as shown in the drawing, form the mold-cavity 3, in which is disposed an earthenware cock, as 4. Dowel-pins 5 carried by one section and entering sockets in the opposite section, serve to prevent the lateral movement of the sections 2+2 when they are put together before each casting operation. The mold 2-2 preferably" stands up-right during the casting operations, and its lower end is supported by a block or part 6, which has a suitable recess or cavity 7 in its top-side to receive the lower ends of the mold sections, the said recess preferably being circular and large enough in diameter to allow the free insertion of the mold.

Each earthenware cock 4 is hollow throughout longitudinally, and is also pro vided with a transverse tapering bore. or
opening 4, in which is disposed the usual rotatable plug or valve 10, by means of which the flow of liquid or acid to andfrom the cock is controlled. The plug 10, has a handle 10, and may be held in the body by any suitable means. When the cock 4: 1s
placed in a mold 22, it is supported therein by a core or plug 11, having a reduced portion 11 which is inserted in the lower open end of thebody 4:. The part 11 passes l cock verticallyfor bringing the transverse opening 4 concentric to similar,but slightly larger, openings 13 and 14 which are formed concentrically in the opposite sides of the split mold, so that one-half of each of said openings occurs in each of the sections 2 and 2 (see Figs. 1, 2 and 8). The reduced portion 11 substantially fills or closes the bottom end of the cock 4, and prevents the molten At the time lead from entering the cock. the cock is disposed in the mold, and before the molten lead is poured, the valve-plug 10 is removed, and thewhole interior of the cock is filled with sand 15, to prevent the molten lead from flowing into theinterior of the earthen body. After the cock is set in position within the mold, split cores or parts 13 and 14 are inserted inthe open-j ings 13" and 14.,ana these are held in place with their inner ends bearing against the corresponding faces of the body 4, andvcon centrically to the transverse opening 4:, by a bolt 16, the said cores being perforated at 16' for the purpose. The said bolt has a tapering head 16 which enters the countersunkouter face of the core 13. The oppo-v site or threaded end of the bolt 16 receives a nutl7 having a cone-shaped portion which enters a-corresponding socket in the face of the core 14:. The tightening up of the nut 17, draws the cores 13 and 14 tightly against the opposite faces of the body of the cock 4:, and as the said cores are larger in diameter than the opening 4 they not only prevent the lead from enterlng the said;
opening, but also prevent the lead from aps proaching close enough to vthesaid opening to touch and thereby prevent-the plug '10.

The tapered head of the bolt and the tapered nut tend to slightlyexpand the cores l3 and 14, so as to hold them tightly and firmly in place, and hold the earthenware cock from shifting in the mold, as well as prevent the escape of any of the lead at the said points. Before the bolt 16 is tightened-up a second plug or core 18, having a reduced lower end 18, is inserted in the opentop iend of the body 4:, to prevent the molten lead from entering the upper end of the cock, 'as'well as for'coring the extended portion 19 of the lead jacket 19. .The core 18'is held in place by gravity. By referring to Fig. 3, it will be seen that the cores 11 and 18 are smaller in diameter than the openings in the topand bottom ends of the mold 2'2'. This provision is made so that the molten lead when poured in the mold.

.the mold ready for casting the jacket or covering 19 around the cock, one of the operators places the jaws of a pair of tongs against the opposite sides of the mold 2-2, at about the positions or points indicated by the arrows 20 in Fig. 1,"and he applies enough pressure to thetongs to hold the mold steady, and at the sametime prevent the sections 2--2 from spreading apart, while another operator pours the molten lead from a ladle 21 into the top-opening 22, which encircles the upper core 18, as indicated in Fig. 3. The dotted" lines in Fig. 1,"show-the.manner in which the'mold sections 2 and'2 may be separated for inserting and removing the earthenware cocks.
My method and. apparatus for casting a lead jacket or covering upon earthenware cocks is extremely simple, and the cocks-can be covered more rapidly. and at'about onefourth the expense, as compared with the old or prevailing method of doing such work, and the said work may be performed withoutany waste or loss from breakage of the fragile cocks.
After the earthenwarecocks arecovered, as hereinshown and deiscribed, they stand -considerable rough ha'ndling-andlast a long time, which effect still a further saving. When the cocks have served their usefulness, the lead-is reclaimed and re-molded, and maybeused forlany suitable purpose without appreciable waste. a pair of cores inserted in openings arranged midway between the ends of the mold sections for adjustably holding the body portion of the cock in place.
2. In an apparatus "for casting a lead covering upon earthenware cooks, the combination with the split mold adapted to receive a cock,'of means for supporting said mold in up-right position, a core disposed in the lower open end of the mold whereby to be inserted part way into the lower end of the cock, suitably supported screw threaded means adjustably supporting said core, split cores inserted through openings in the opposite sides of the mold for adjusting the cock 1 laterally, and a core disposed in the open top of said mold and adapted to be inserted part way into the top end of said cock.
3. An apparatus for casting lead jackets on earthenware cocks, comprising a pair of mold sections adapted to be joined together for forming the mold cavity therebetween adapted to receive a cock, the opposite ends of said mold being open, a block for supporting the bottom end of the mold sections, a base for supporting said block, a screw carried by said, base, a core piercing the said block for supporting the lower end of the cock, said core resting upon said screw, a pair of split-cores inserted through openings in the opposite sides of the said mold sections, a bolt for holding said split cores in place, a. core inserted in the open top of the mold and adapted to be partially inserted in the top end of said cock, the said top and bottom cores adapted for coring the projecting ends of the lead jackets.
4. In an apparatus for casting a lead jacket around earthenware cooks, the combination with the split mold adapted to inclose a cock of smaller size than the cavity of the said mold, of means including a base for supporting said mold, a screw threaded through the said base concentric to the said cock, a core adjustably supported by said screw for supporting said cock, and a pair of split cores disposed in openings in the opposite sides of the mold and adapted to engage the opposite sides of said cock, for adjustably holding the cock in the said mold.
5. In an apparatus for casting a lead jacket around earthenware cooks, the combination with the split mold adapted to resaid cock for holding the cock concentrically in the said mold.
6. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a pair of mold sections adapted for inclosing an earthenware cock and having a mold cavity longer and broader than said cock, the opposite ends of said cavity being open, cores disposed in the open ends of the mold cavity and adapted to engage the opposite ends of the cock, a screw engaging one of said cores for adjusting said cock longitudinally, and split cores disposed in the openings in the opposite sides of said mold sections for adjusting said cock laterally.
7. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a pair of mold sections adapted for enveloping an earthenware cock and having a mold cavity larger than the said cock, and having openings mid-way between the ends thereof, the opposite ends of the said cavity being open, a support for said mold sections, a core piercing the said support and adapted to engage the bottom end of the cock, means for adjusting said core vertically, means inserted in the openings in the opposite sides of the said mold sections adapted to adjust the cock laterally, and means for preventing molten lead when poured into the mold cavity from entering the interior of the cock.
8. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination of a split mold, means for supporting the mold in upright 'position, a core disposed in the bottom of the mold, screw means for adjusting said core, a core disposed at the top of the mold, and a pair of cores inserted in openings substantially midway between the ends of the mold sections.
9. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination of a sectional mold for cocks or the like, longitudinally extending internal cores at the ends of the mold, one of said cores being lengthwise adjustable, and transversely extending cores pro- 7 jecting inwardly from the sides of the mold.
10. In an apparatus of the character de scribed, the combination of a sectional mold for cocks or the like, longitudinally extending internal cores at the ends of the mold, said cores being adapted to engage opposite ends of a cook or the like positioned in the mold, and transversely extending cores projecting inwardly from the sides of the mold to engage the sides of the cock, said transversely extending cores being relatively ad justable. r
