HOWARD s. KENNEDY, or TROY, NEW YORnnssIcrNoa Y nsNn ASSIGNMENTS, To CLUETT, rnABo'DY & '00., 1nd, or TROY, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION or new Patented Mar. 14, 1916.
Application filed April 6, 1912. Serial No. 688,840.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD S. KENNEDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Troy, county of Rensselaer, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collars, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to such improvements and consists of the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and subsequently claimed.
Reference may be had to the accompanying drawings, and the reference characters marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. Similar characters refer to similar parts in the several figures therein.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a plan view of my improved collar laid out flat. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same taken on the broken line 22 in Fig. *1 with the plies of fabric greatly exaggerated.
In certain forms of standing collars having end-wings and buttonholed end-tabs, it is found impossible to make the collar as an integral construction where the bottom edge of the wing and the top edge of the buttonhole-tab form a very acute reentrant angle. It has therefore been customary in making such wing-collars to form the body of the collar with integral buttonhole-tabs and with separate inserted wings. The joining of the inserted wing to the body of the collar necessarily forms a ridge extending more or less obliquely across the body of the collar to its top edge. the joint between the wing and the body of the collar being exposed to view on the top edge of the collar.
The object of the present invention is to make integral with the body of the collar, end-wings forming a sharply acute reentrant angle with the respective buttonholed endtabs.
In carrying out my invention, I cut away the body of the collar obliquely to its bottom edge along the lines of the bottom edges of the respective wings and attach the endtabs to the respective cut-away portions of the body of the collar.
Referring to the drawings wherein the invention is shown in preferred form, 1, represents the body of the collar having the end-wings 2, 2 formed integral therewith. These end-wings are adapted to be folded over along the respective oblique lines, 3, along which lines would be formed the ridges above referred to, if these wings were made separate and inserted in the usual manner. By making these wings integral withthe body of the collar, the lines 3, 3 become more or less variable in their location, as the user can fold over more or less of the wing as he may desire, giving to the collar a degree of adaptability not found in the collar having inserted wings.
In carrying out my invention, I cut away the ends of the collar at 6, obliquely to its bottom edge substantially along the lines of the bottom edges of the respective wings.
The end buttonholes, 4, are formed in end tabs, 5, attached to the respective cut-away portions, 6, of the body of the collar by inserting said tabs between the body plies and stitching said plies upon the inserted tab in the usual manner of inserting tabs.
I have shown the collar tab made of three plies of fabric and the end-tab, 5,'made of two plies of fabric, but either of said parts may be made of any desired number of plies.
By making the collar in the manner described, I am able to make the body of blanks inturned on folding-machines and the end-tabs also of blanks inturned on foldingmachines. the whole collar being thus made of machine-turned parts, which would be impossible in an integral construction of collar of the shape shown.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. A standing-collar having a body-portion with obliquely truncated end-portions adiacent to its lower edge and integral endwings overhanging the respective truncated portions, and separate buttonholed end-tabs coinciding with, and secured to, the respective truncated end-portions of the body, whereby said tabs form acute reentrant angles with the respective end-wings.
2. A standing-collar comprising a maits bottom edge along substantially the lines chine-turned body having integral end-Wings, and separate attached inwardly flaring machine-turned buttonholed end-tabs forming acute rentrant angles with said Wings, the end of said body being cut away obliquely to ing with, the respective cut-away end portions of the body. 7 In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this lst-dayv-of April, 1912;
. V HOWARD. S. KENNEDY.

said end-tabs being attached to, and coincid- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patent:, Washington; D. G.
