To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD GYssLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Melbeta, in the county of Scotts Blufi and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brooders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in brooders; and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and mproved means whereby the requisite temperature within the brooder may be maintained in an automatic manner.
Furthermore, it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the interior of the brooder may be heated.
Furthermore, the invention has for an object to provide a device of this general character of a novel and improved construction whereby the parts comprised therein may be readily separated and assembled;
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved brooder whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. e
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claims.
In order that my invention maybe the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a brooder constructed in accordance with an embodiment ofmy invention; Fig.2 is a longitudinal vertical sectionalview taken through the device as illustrated in Fig. 1
and at substantially the transverse center thereof; Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional .view taken though the brooder at substantially the longitudinal center of the brooder proper; Fig. i is a sectional'view taken substantially on the line r-4i of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 6 is a horizontal longitudinal sectional view taken through the brooder as disclosed in Fig. 1 and at a-point above the heating tank 7 inner walls of said compartment are pro-' vided with the lining 4 of asbestos or the like and the forward open face of the compartment 3 is adapted to be closed by the door 5 provided with the area inlet openings 6. The housing 2 is hingedly engaged, as at 7, with the base 1 along the longitudinal margin of the base opposite to the sired for the purpose of cleansing. It is also to be observed that the surface 8 of the base 1 affords a solid floor for the housing 2 when said housing is in operative position upon the base 1. The housing 2 is adapted to be locked to the base 1 in any conventional manner and as is particularly illustrated at 9 in Fig. 1. At points a predetermined distance above the lower ends thereof the side and end walls of the housing 2 have secured to their inner surfaces the cleats 10 on which. is adapted to be rested the tank 11 snugly contacting with the walls of the housing 2 and dividing the panels 15 of glass or other transparent compartment 3 sothat the housing 2 and 1 base '1 may be readily separated when dematerial. 'The lower portion of the housing "2 is provided-with a compartment 16 having its lower and forward face open and adapted to register with the compartment 3, hereinbefore referred to, the forward open face of the compartment 16 being closed in a conventional manner by the door 17, the inner surfaces of the walls of said compartment 16 being also provided with a lining 18 of asbestos or the like and the side walls of said compartment are provided adapted to be disposed the depending exten-' sion 22 of the tank 11, said extension being substantially in the form of a truncated cone and snugly fitting within the opening in the top 21 and extending into the chimney 23 of the lamp 24, said chimney 23 being preferably of metal and also truncated in form whereby it will be perceived that a tight joint is effected between the extension 22 and the chimney 23. The upper surface of the well 25 is defined by an upstanding annular flange 26 to afford a reservoir to contain water. The extension 22 has arranged therein the upstanding dome 27 extending upwardly and within the tank 11 and the upperextremity of the chimney 23 is dis posed directly within said dome and leading from the upper end of the dome and in communication therewith is the flue 28 extending through and terminating above the top 29 of the housing 2, said top being hingedl'y engaged with the housing proper and adapted to be adjusted either into an open or closed position and being maintained in its closed position through the medium of conventional locking means 30, as particularly shown in Fig. 1. The upper portion of the dome 27 has also in communication therewith the tubes 31 disposed within the tank 11 and terminating in the upstanding portions 32 extending through the top 29 when in closed position and discharging within the atmosphere. The tubes 31 serve to effectively heat the water within the tank 11, said water being initially placed within the tank 11 through the filling vent 33.
The top 29 is provided at substantially its axial center with a ventilating opening 34 defined by the upstanding flanges 35 and permanently closed by the fabric 36, preferably reticulated, which serves to prevent rodents or the like from gaining access within the upper chamber B through said openings 34. The opening 34 is also adapted to be closed by the vertical swinging door 37 overlying the upper edges of the flanges 35 and hingedly connected, as at 38, with one of said flanges and projecting beyond the hinged margin of the door 37 and at right angles thereto is an arm 39 provided with an equalizing or balancing weight 40 and adjustably secured to saidarm 39 intermediate itslength is a depending rod 41 extending through the top 29 and pivotally engaged with the lever 42 which is also pivotally engaged with the bracket 43 depending from the inner surface of the top 29.
Interposed between the top 29 and the lever 42 and operatively engaged therewith is the thermostatic wafer 44 whereby it will be perceived that under the influence of the temperature within the chamber B, the door 37 will be automatically raised or lowered so that the temperature within the chamber 1 B is controlled in an automatic manner. Also carried by the door 37 is an arm 45 extending in a direction opposite to that of the arm 39 and the outer end of said arm 45 is provided with the disk or valve 46 adapt ed to coact with the upper end of the flue 28 whereby the passage of the heat from the lamp through the flue 28 is also automatr cally controlled by the temperature within the housing 2. The housing 2 in one of its walls is provided with an opening 47 affording access to the lower chamber A and said opening 47 is adapted to be closed in a conventional manner by the door 48.
As herein disclosed, an end wall of the housing 2 is provided with an opening 49 affording access to the upper chamber 15, said opening being also under control of a conventional door 50. Superimposed upon the tank 11 is a removable floor 51, preferably of reticulatedfabric, and secured to the frame 52 whereby said floor may be effectively maintained in applied position and in spaced relation relative to the tank 11 and the end bars of the frame 52 with the tabs 53, preferably of rubber, whereby said frame 52 together with thefloor 51 may be readily applied in operative position. It is to be understood that the floor 51 is suitably perforated to permit the passage of the flue 28, i f
the tubes 31 and the Vent 33. I have found it in practice particularly advantageous to employ in connection with the upper chamber B the run-way 54 to afford means whereby the chicks may have access to said chanr her or whereby they may be able to go out into the fresh air. As herein disclosed, one extremity of the run-way is adapted to be locked in a conventional manner, as at 55, to the end of the housing provided with the opening 49 and the outer end of said runway is supported by the legs 56 pivotally engaged therewith so that said run-way may be supported in substantially a horizontal position or lowered so that the chicks may readily escape from or enter within the chamber B. The floor of the run-way is also preferably grooved, as at 57, to prevent the chicks from slipping.
The run-way comprises, as herein embodied, the upstanding longitudinal side walls 58 and when the run-way is in elevated or horizontal position, I find it desirable to close the outer end of said runway through the medium of the removable door 59 engageable between the spaced vertical cleats 6O affixed to the opposed faces of the side walls 58 at their outer ends. I also find it of advantage to provide the runway with the swinging top 61 preferably comprising a frame 62 and the reticulated fabric 63 whereby the chicks upon the run-way may be prevented from escaping therefrom yet affording no obstruction to the fresh air. Any conventional means may be employed for maintaining the top 61 in an elevated position when the requirements of practice so prefer.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a brooder constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice, as, for instance, the pipes 28 and 32, or more particularly the portions thereof intersecting the chamber B, may be covered with asbestos or the like to prevent the chicks from becoming burned when contacting with said pipes.
I claim:
1. A brooder comprising a base, a housing hinged to said base, said base and housing being I provided with compartments adapted to register, a heating medium within the compartment of the base, a tank positioned within the housing and provided with an extension disposed within the compartment of the housing, and a flue disposed through the tank and its extension and coacting with the heating medium.
2. A brooder comprising a base, a housing mounted thereon, said base and housing being provided with registering compartments, a heating medium arranged within the compartment of the base, a tank positioned within the housing and provided with an extension disposed within the compartment of the housing, and a flue disposed through the tank and its extension and coacting with the heating medium.
3. A brooder comprising a base, a housing mounted thereon, said base and housing being provided with registering compartments, a heating medium arranged within the compartment of the base, a tank positioned within the housing and provided with an extension disposed within the compartment of the housing, and a flue disposed through the tank and its extension and coacting with the heating medium, said tank dividing the housing into a lower and an upper chamber, each of said chambers being provided with an entrance opening.

6. A brooder comprising a base, a housing mounted thereon, said base and housing being provided with registering compartments, a heating medium arranged within the compartment of the base, a tank positioned within the housing and provided with an extension disposed within the compartment of the housing, a flue disposed through the tank and its extension and coacting with the heating medium, and tubes in communication with the flue and disposed through the tank and in communication with the atmosphere, said tubes intersecting the upper chamber of the housing, said flue also intersecting the upper chamber of the housing and being in communication with theatmosphere.
7 A brooder comprising a base, a housing mounted thereon, said base and housing being provided with registering compartments, a heating medium arranged within the compartment of the base, a tank positioned within the housing and provided with an extension disposed Within the compartment of the housing, and a flue disposed through the tank and its extension and coacting with the heating medium, the upper portion of the heating medium arranged in the compartment of the base being provided with a reservoir.
