Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 2%, 1216.
Application filed June 23, 1915. Serial No. 3385 fication.
. vide the same with auxiliary members so arranged upon and associated with'the chair as not to detract from the appearance of the chair but, as a matter of fact, to reinforce the said chair, thesaid auxiliary members being further adapted, when moved or swung away from the chair, to convert the chair into a crib or lounge. I also propose to provide an article of furniture, such as an ordinary chair, with panel members adapted to hold against the side, back and over the seat of the chair, and which, when swung awayfrom .the'cha'ir, will produce a separate article of furniture, such as a crib or lounge.
It is a further object of my invention to construct convertible furniture which shall be cheap, simple, strong and effective.
Further objects and advantages will appear as the nature of the invention is more fully understood, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which there is illustrated a simple and satisfactory reduction of the improvement to practice, and in which Figure 1 isa perspective view of an article of furniture constructed in accordance with the present invent on, the same being shown in the'form of a chair; Fig. 2 1s a similar view showing the chair converted into a lounge or crib; Fig. 3 is a central vertical longitudinal sectional view of the device illustrated in Fig. 1; Fig. 4: is a rear elevar tion of the same; Fig. 5 is a central vertical longitudinal sectional view through the device illustrated in Fig. 2; and Fig. 6 1s a detail perspective view of the end of one of the auxiliary side members.
In the drawingsl designates a chair,wh1ch may be of the ordinary construction, or which may be ofa special design should the same be found desirable in carrying out my inventiorr' The chair preferably has its back 2 extended a suitable distance above its side arms 3, and the said arms preferably project outwardly from the sides of the chair. The seat 4, at the outer end thereof, has hinged thereto, as at 5, an auxiliary seat 6 which, as shown n Figs. 1 and 8 of the drawings, is adapted to be swung over the seat 4, and the face of thc'auxiliary seat 6, providing the upper face thereof when in such position,-
may be upholstered if desired. The inner edge of the auxiliary seat has its opposite corners provided with hinges 7 to which are secured lugs 8 that are adapted to support the auxiliary seat 6 when the seat is swung to the position illustrated in Figs. 2 and 5. Hingedly secured'to the front stiles of the chair 1, as at 99, are panel members or auxiliary sides 1010, the said auxiliary sides of the chair 1, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, being adapted to be received beneath the ledges of the arms 3 of the said chair 1 and their hinges are so arranged that when the said members 10 are swung outwardly of the chair 1 as shown in Figs. 2 and 5 the opposite faces of the members 10 will be disposed flush with the opposite faces of the sides proper of the chair 1. Hingedly connected, as at 11-11, to. one of the edges of one of the auxiliary sides or panels 1.0, is a similar panel 12, the same including top and bottom plates 1212 which project a suitable distance beyond the panel proper of the member 12 and which are provided and adjacent the said projecting portions with spaced openings 1313. The free end of the side panels opposite that provided with thepanel 12 have their end stiles provided with longitudinally extended threaded studs 14.14, and these studs are adaptedto be received within the outer openings 13 of the members 1.2 of the panel 12 whenthe said panel 12 is swung against the back 2 of the chair 1 when the device is in the posi;
tion'illustrated in'Figs. 1, 2and 8, the said studs "14 being received within the other openingof' each of the mendbers 12 when the panel 121's swung to provide the end or gate member for the crib, as illustrated in.
' Figs. 2 and .5.
my device, as Well as the advantages thereof,
will, it is thought, be apparent to those skilled in the art to which said invention appertains without further detail .(flescription.v
Having thus described my invention, I
claim:
1. An article of furniture, a chair, auxiliary side panels hingedly secured to the front stiles of the chair, a panel secured to one of the auxiliary side members, means for securing the said panel to the other aux-v iliary side membenan auxiliary seat hing- 1 edly secured to the outer end of the seat of the chair, and hinged legs upon. the saidv auxiliary seat; i
2. A convertible article of furniture, as herein described, including a chair, an auxiliary seat hingedly secured to the seat of the chair, hinged legs for the said auxiliary seat, means for sustaining the legs at right in presencez'of two Witnesses.
intense engaging the said studs for retaining thep anel upon the said last nieni'zioned auxiliary} 7 "side.
