APPLICATION FILED. FEB. 10. 1914.

THE COLUMliIA FLANOGRAPH 10.. WASHINGTON, D. x.
JULIUS R FLEMMIhlG, OF YOAKUM, TEXAS.
PAD FOR non-sn-connens.
Application filedFebruary 10,;1914. *seriai no. 817,862.
To all whomit may concern Be it known that I, JULIUS R. FLEMMiNG,
a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Yoakum, in the county of Dewitt and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Im-c provements in Pads for Horse-Collars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pads for horse collars; and it has for its primary'object the provision of a tab of this character which may be connected in the usual well known manner to the tip of one of the side branches of the collar and which will be provided with a free flexible portion formed so as to receive the tip of the other branch of the collar when both branches are adjusted around the neck of the animal whereby the free ends of the pad will be positively held against working from under the collar when excessive pullis applied to the animal at the time of backing.
Another object of the invention is the proision of a pad which may be connected with the collar ends with facility,-and one which will be simple, strong and durable, and one which may be connected with the collar without requiring changes in the construction thereof. i 7
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction. combination and arrange- The collar 1 herein illustrated is of the usual well known construction and the branch 2 is provided with an adjusting strap 3 of the usual well known form-that is adapted to be extended through and adjustably connected with a buckle L on the branch 5 of the collar so that both branches of the collar may be held operatively connected with the neck of an animal.
The protecting tab which is adapted to span the joint between the tips of the collar branches is constructed from a single strip of leather having a main body portion 7 which underlies the tips of the collar branches at the points of connection thereof, and as shown said body portion is curved Specification of Letters Patent. Patnted f longitudinally and the terminal S'thereof is secured by stitching or otherwise, as'at 9,to the tip of the branch 2. The opposite terminal 10 is extended for a distance beyond the joint between the tips of the collar ends so that it will lie directly against the under sides of the branch 5 near-the tip thereof.
This terminal 10 is provided with a broad-- ened portion 11, which is'upwardly offset from the plane of the body portion 7, and which 1s separated from the portion 10 by a slot 12, the latter having a length equal to" the width of the tip of thebranch 5 so that 7 Feb. 15, 191 6.
FIQE;
said tip may be properly extended through the passage or slot and the portion 11 then made to overlie the tip as clearly shown in Fig. l of the drawings. The sides 13 of the portions 10 and 11 are disposed at the sides of the tip of the branch 5 and incident to the fact that the tip of the branch is extended through the mentioned slot the pad will be positively held against working from its intended position relatively of the tip of the collar branches. The longitudinal sides of the body portion 7 are suitably formed so as to curve up over the sides of the tips of the collar branches and flush therewith whereby to protect the corners of said branches from engaging directly against the neck of the animal.
While the pad is preferably constructed of leather, it is to be understood that any suitable well known material may be substituted therefor.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying. drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation. Various changes 1n the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing fro-m the prin- I ciple or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as claimed.
I cla1m:
In a device of the class described, in comthe ends together, a tab consisting of a main body portion having inwardly converging side edges, the connected ends of said collar (.i-verlying the inner narrowmost portions of said tab, one of the sides of said tab being secured fixedly upon the adjacent side of sand collar, side portions extending contlnuously throughout the length of said tab and of such a Width as to project beyond the attached ends of said collar and. gradually increasing in Width toward the ends of said tab, and an ofiset portion formed upon said tab and locatedbeyond the end of the body portion onone side, the side portions of said JULIUS R. FLEMMING.
