Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES E. CA'rHnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and Commonwealth of -Massachusetts, have 1nvented a new and useful Improvement in Envelops, of which the following is a specification, accompanied by drawings, forming a part of the same.

The object of my invention is to rovide upon an envelop of the ordinary orm of construction detachable strips upon both of the side flaps, usually known as the seal flap and the back flap. I accomplish this object by the construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the annexed claim. 4

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows an envelop blank in its extended form preparatory to being folded. Fig. 2 shows the envelop folded, but with its seal flap open. Fig. 3 shows the folded envelop withthe seal flap closed. Fig. 4 shows the envelop with its seal flap closed, but with the detachable strips removed.

Similar reference characters refer to similar parts in the different figures.

Fig. 1 represents the envelop blank preparatory to being folded upon the broken lines 1, 2, 3 and 4 to form a rectangular envelop. The blank is provided with a back flap 5, a seal flap 6, and end flaps 7 and 8. The end flap 7 is provided at its tip with a gummed surface 9 and the back flap 5 and the seal flap 6 are provided with gulmned surfaces 10 and 11 which constitute narrow strips of gum adjacent to the folding lines 2 and 4. Immediately outside the gummed surfaces 10 and 11 are rows of perforations 12 and 13 by which the back flap and the seal flap are weakened on straight lines parallel with the sides of the envelop and adjacent to the gummed surfaces 10 and 11.

The envelop is completed by folding the flap 8 on the broken line 3 over against the body portion of the envelop, and folding the flap 7 against the body portion of the envelop on the broken line 1 with its gummed surface 9 overlapping the tip of the end fla 8 in the position shown in Fig. 2. The bac flap 5 is then folded upon the folded end flaps to which it adheres by means of thegummed surface 10. The seal flap is then creased on the broken line 4, adapting it to be folded over in closing the envelop in the posltion shown in Fig. 3 and enabling the envelop to be closed by moistening the gummed surface 11 and sticking it to the outer surface of the end flaps 7 and 8. That portion of the back flap 5 which lies outside the row of perforations 12 constitutes a re movable strip 14 and that portion of the seal flap 6 which lies outside the row of perforations 13 constitutes a removable strip 15. Any desired memoranda may be entered upon the removable strips 14 and 15 and the strips detached from the envelop and used as checks or receipts. I

An envelop constructed as above de-= scribed serves a variety of useful purposes whlch need not be enumerated here. uesful purpose for which my improved envelop is especially adapted is for the transmission of telegraphic messages, in which the receipt can be given to the messenger by fillin out a suitable blank upon one of the detac able strips 14 or 15. When the envelop is folded, the detachable strip 15 overlaps the detachable strip 14, enabling an inscription upon the outside of the strip 15 to be reproduced by the introduction of a carbon sheet upon the outside of the strip 14, so that an inscription upon the strip 15 can be accurately reproduced upon the strip 14.

I claim:

An envelbp of the class described, formed from a blank having end and bottom flaps folded over upon its body portion and attached together to constitute the back of the envelop, one of said flaps having a free detachable extension beyond the portion thereof which is attached to the other flaps, and the envelop having a seal flap with a ed surface for attachment to the back of the envelop to close the same, said seal flap having a free detachable extension be yond said gummed surface adapted to over- One lap the other free detachable extension when CHARLES E.
