To all who-m itmag concern:
Be it known that I, HJALMAR G. CARL- SON, at Worcester, in the county of TVorcester and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Methods of Forming a Sheet-Metal Nut,of
which the followingis a specification accompanied by drawings, forming a part of the same and illustrating the method of carrying my invention into effect The object of my present invention isto provide a method of forming sheet metal blanks into cup shaped articles such as nuts or the like. Myimprovements are especially adapted for the production of that class of articles an inner surfaces other than parallel. In the accompanying drawings 1 have illustrated ing the Figs. 4. and 5 represent the shaping die in sectional view and show blanks being forced through the a cylindrical punch, the sections of Figs. 4:
and 5 being represented on the planes of the broken lines 5-5, Fig. 3, respectively. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the blank after it has been forced through the die represented in Fig.3. Figs. 7 and 8 are and side views respectively of the blank resented in Fig. 3. Fig. 9 representsan end view of the punch employed in connectlon with the several dies; Figs. 10 and 11 are "ertical sectional views of a reducing die,
having a smaller aperture than that shown in Fig. 3,'the sections being taken on planes at right angles to each other, and representing a blank in its passage through the die. Figs. 12 and 13 are side and top views reof the blank after its passage Specification of Letters Patent.

and Fig. "14 is a' verticalsectional view of a completed hexagonal nut which has been formed in "accordance with my present in-] vention.

My present invention is especially de-- signed for the formation from a sheet metal a and therefore I have illustrated the invention in the accompanying drawings in connection with the manufacture of a nut of blank of a hexagonal screw threaded nut,f
that class. The blank from which the'nutis formed consists of a circular disk 1 of sheet metal represented in plan view in Fig.
1, and in edge view in Fig. 2, the. thickness of the disk being determined somewhat by the proposed thickness of the walls of the nut. I employ a die 2 as shown in plan view in Fig. 3 having a'cylindrical recess 3 at its upper edge suitable to receive the blank .1 and communicating with a hexagonal hole 4 in the die, whose diameter is less than the diameter of the circular recess 3.' The circular recess 3 and the hexagonal hole i are connected by a tapering hexagonal section 5 to facilitate the passage of the blank whenplaced in the recess 3 through the hole in the die. In connection with the die 2 I employ a cylindrical punch 6 whose diam eter corresponds with the required interior diameter of the nut when completed. The disk shaped blank 1 is placed in the recess 3 of the die 2 and forced through the hexagonal hole a by means of the cylindrical punch 6 forming the shape shown in Figs. 6, 7 and 8, giving a hexagonal form to a portion of the exterior, but 1 without substantial change in the thickness of the blank.
The die 2 is of proper size with relation to the punch 6 to enable the blank to be pressed into a cup'shape, as shown in perspective view in Fig. 6, giving a cylindrical form to the interior wall at the bottom of the cup and a hexagonal form to the exterior of the cup atthe top. To produce this result the blank is made. to fill the space between the hexagonal walls of'the die'and the cylindrical surface of the punch on the plane of the broken line 55, Fig. 3, and asshown in sectional view in Fig. 5, while the blank at the hexagonal corners 7, Fig. 7, will be simply bent by its. contact with the die. The cup shaped blank as shown in Figs.*
6, 7 and 8 is then crowded through a second die 8, by the same cylindrical punch?) or by a punch of equal diameter. The hexagonal opening 9 mths die 8 is smaller than that e in the die 2, by which the sides of the cup 8 an elongation is made of the sides of the cup, thereby increasing its depthand tor nin the hexagonal outer surfaces of sufiicient areato receive a Wrench, as shown at 12, 12. Fig. 12. trimming the edge 13 at right angles With the axis 01 the nut, forming the screw thread 14 and, if desired, forming a hole 15 through the bottom, as represented in Fig. 14.
I claim 1.; lhe method of shaping sheet metal, consisting in bending the peripheral portion of a sheet nietalv blank to form asubstantially cylindrical portion, thus producing a cup, and simultaneously pressing the inner face of said portion into cylindrical 1 inner face of iorinand the outer facethereof into polyg- 3 The nut is then completed by form and the outer fa'ce'tliereof into po portion of a sheet metal: blank to: form a.
substantially cylindrical portion, thus pro due-mg a cup, simultaneously pressing the sa d portion into cylindrlcal onal; form, and cutting threads in the inner cylindrical factor the cup to form the nut. The method offo'rmingja-nut, consista ing in bending theiperipheral portion of a sheet metal blank to form a substantially cylindrical portion, thus producing a 01113,;- siinultaneously pressing" the inner race of said portion into cylindrical form and lthe," outer face thereof into, polygonal form, cutting threads in the innercylindrioal face thus formed, and forming an opening in the closed end 02"? the cup.- v i Dated this fourteenth day of April 1910.
