To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, l/VILLIAM J. STILLING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Elmhurst, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Operating Devices for Sliding Doors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for operating double sliding doors and is particularly adapted for useon elevator doors.
The main Object of my inventlon is the construction of anovel device of the above nature which shall be simple in construction, of ease and of low cost to manufacture and by means of which a movement of. one of the doors in one direction shall simultaneously produce a'movementof, the other door in the opposite direction. The opposite end of the lever 8 is pivotally connected to a sliding block '11 adapted to slideon a rod 12 held by brackets v13 secured to the door 2 by suitable bolts or rivets as shown. encircling the rod 12, is compressed between the lower bracket 13 and the "sliding block 11 and exerts an upward pressure on thesliding block.

' A latch25 is pivoted at 26 to the link 6 and is provided with a slot 27 which receives a pin 28 suitably fastened to or integrally united with the link 6 and which supports the latch when the latch is in normal posi- I tion and limits the movement of the latch on its pivot. The end of the pin 28 is provided with a flange or retaining member 29 for preventing any movement of the latch except an angular movement on pivot 26.
The doors are operated in the following manner: The latcl1bolt is pulled down against the action of the spring 18 until the latch-bolt is released from its engagement with the end of the latch 25, thereby unlocking the doors. The door 2, preferably by means of the latch-bolt 15, is then thrust or pulled to the right against the action of the spring 1 f and the movement of the door 2 to the right produces a movement of the door 1 to the left. As is obvious, a movement of one door in one direction simultaneously produces a movement of the other door in the opposite direction. After the doors, in either an opening or closing movement, reach a position at which the link 8 assumes a perfectly vertical position, the spring 1 1, due to its upward pressure on the sliding block 11, assists the movement of the doors in their travel. Upon a closing movement of the doors, and just before they slide into meeting or closedposition, the latch-bolt 15 engages the under side of the latch forcing the latch upward on its pivot due to the action of the spring 18. VJhen the doors meet,the latch falls and rests on pin 28 and the latch-bolt engages the end of the latch thereby automatically locking the doors.
The position of door 2 and lever 8 are shown in dotted lines when the doors are wide open and the paths of travel of the ends of the lever 8 when the doors are operated are likewise shown in dotted lines.
I do not desire to limit myself to the precise details of construction and arrangement herein set forth as it is manifest that various modifications may be made therein Without departing from the essential features of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a device for operating a pair of sliding doors in opposite directions, the combination of a link pivoted at one end to one of the doors and having its other end pivotally connected to the other door, a latch on said link and a bolt movable vertically and adapted to engage said latch to lock the doors together.
2. In a device for simultaneously operat ing double parting sliding doors, the combination of a link secured to one of the doors, a lever connected to said link and the other of said doors and means engaging said lever for assisting in both the opening and closing movement of the doors.
3. In a device for simultaneously operating a pair of sliding doors, the combination of a link pivoted to one of the doors, a lever connected to said link and to the other door and a spring carried by one of the doors and exerting an upward vertical pressure against said lever for assisting in both the opening and closing movement of the doors after they have reached a predetermined position in their travel.
4. In a device for simultaneously operating double parting sliding doors, the combination of a link pivotally connected to one of the doors, a lever -fulcrumed to a suitable support and pivotally connected at one end to said link and at the other end to the other of said doors, means engaging said link when the doors are in closed position in order to lock the same and means for assisting in both the opening and closing movement of the doors.
5. In a device for simultaneously operating a pair of sliding doors, the combination of a link pivotally connected to one of the doors, a lever fulcrumed to a suitable support and pivotally connected to said link and the other of said doors, a vertical latch-bolt adapted to engage the link to automatically lock the doors when they slide into closed position and meansfor assisting in both the opening and closing movement of the doors after they. have reached a predetermined position in their travel.
6. In a device for simultaneously operat ing a pair of sliding doors, the combination of a link pivotally connected to one of the doors, a latch pivotally connected to said link, a lever connected to said link and the other of said doors, a latch-bolt adapted to engage said latch to automatically lock the doors when they slide into closed position and means for assisting the opening and closing movement of the doors.
7. In a device for simultaneously operating a pair of sliding doors, the combination of a link pivotally connected to one of the doors, a latch pivotally connected to said link, a lever fulcrumed to a suitable support and pivotally connected to said link and the other of said doors and a spring-actuated latch-bolt adapted to engage the latch to automatically lock the doors when they slide into closed position.
8. In a device for simultaneously operating a pair of sliding doors, the combination of a link pivotally connected to one of the doors, a lever fu'lcrumed to a suitable support and pivotally connected to said link and the other of said doors, a latch-bolt adapted to engage the link to automatically lock the doors when they slide into closed position and means for retaining said latch-bolt in locked position.
9. In a device for simultaneously operating a pair of sliding doors, the combination of a link pivotally connected to one of the doors, a latch pivotally connected to said link, a slidable block carried by a rod fas- 10 and closing movement of the doors after they have reached a predetermined position in their travel.
