To all whom it may concern Be it known that 'I, FRANK J. SHAW, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of Leominster, in the, county of l/Vorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Childrens. Carriages, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to childrens vehicles and more particularly to an arrangement whereby the handles maybe readily shifted from one end to the other of the vehicle.
The character of the invention may be readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:

is well understood by those skilled in the art, it is desirable to have the handles readily shifted by an unskilled attendant from one end of the carriage to the other so as to permit the occupant to be readily wheeled forward or backward. This end is conveniently secured by means of the present invention as illustrated in the embodiment shown in the drawings in which the illustrative running gear frame is rectangular in form and consists of longitudinal sidebars 5, 6, connected by transverse axle bars 7 and 8. Each side bar 5 and 6 is provided at each of its ends with a casting 9 pinned thereto and having an eye 10.
The handle bars comprise longitudinal bars l2, 12 connected by a cross bar 1 1 and by a handle 15. At the lower end of each longitudinal bar 12 is a casing 17 provided with a depending hook 18 arranged for insertion in an eye of one of the castings 9. The castings 9 and 17 are preferably cylin-.
drical or in any case of substantial extent in cross section so that their adjacent surfaces when the parts are assembled, shall bear extensively against each other, and preferably the casting 9 is provided with an upwardly projecting toe 20 and the casting 17 with an upwardly projecting toe 21. the longitudinal handle bars 12, 12 is a lug through which passes a link 26 which is threaded as shown on a thumb nut 27 which bears against the lug 25. The opposite end of the link 26 is provided with a hook or other suitable engaging device 28.
When the hook 18 of each longitudinal handle bar spending eye of a casting 9, the parts are secured in assembled position by merely hooking the end 28 of the link 26 into an engaging device presently described and then turning up the thumb nut 27 preferably enough to tighten the parts substantially and place them under tension, the link 26 serving as a tie rod to hold the parts securely and tightly and to prevent rattling. In efiect, the assembling of the parts is so secure that the longitudinal rods 12 are made substantially integral with the side bars 5 and 6 respectively.
The means for engaging the hooked ends of the links or tie rods 26 is conveniently provided by mounting a longitudinally disposed strip 30 along the middle of the running gear frame. The specific strip 30 (see Fig. 4:) is mounted upon brackets 31, 31 which 11ft thestrip 30 somewhat so that the brake mechanism comprising the treadle 32, link 33 and levers 34:, 34 may be accommodated beneath the strip. To receive the hook 28 of the tie rod 26, the strip 30 is provided with a hole or seat 36 to accommodate the hook when the handles are placed at one end of the vehicle and a second hole or seat 38 to accommodate the hook when the handles are positioned at the opposite end of the vehicle.

It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific embodiment described above for illustration, since the same may be variously modified within the scope of the subjoined claimsas will appear to those skilled in the art.
Claims:
1. In a vehicle of the class described, the combination of a rectangular running gear frame comprising longitudinal side membore; a casting having a substantially vertical bearing surface and a depending eye, secured to each end of each longitudinal Side bar of the running gear frame; handle means comprising longitudinal bars; a casting at the lower end of each longitudinal handle bar, having a depending hook and a substantially vertical bearing surface, said hook and said bearing surface being arranged to engage respectively the eye and the bearing surface of one of the said castings upon a longitudinal side bar of the running gear frame; upwardly projecting cooperating toes upon the two mating castings of the handle bars and the longitudinal sidebars; a cross bar connecting the longitudinal handle bars; a lug upon said cross bar; a tie rod passing through said lug and having a hooked end; a nut upon said tie rod and engaging said lug; and a centrally and longitudinally disposed strip upon the running gear frame having two seats to receive the hooked end of the tie rod according as the handles are positioned at one or the other end of the vehicle.
2. In a vehicle of the class described, the combination with a running gear frame of handle means therefor; separable elements 9 and 17 fast on said frame and handle means respectively, having interlocking elements and abutting faces, a tension member 26 for connection with said frame and handle means, and means and 27 coop crating with said member for tensioning' the latter and pressing said interlocking elements into secure non-rattling engagement.
3. In a vehicle of the class described, the combination of a running gear frame; handle attaching means at both ends of the running gear frame comprising hook receiving eyes and vertical bearing surfaces; handle means; books on the handle means to (engage said eyes; bearing surfaces on said handle means for abutting engagement with the bearing surfaces of said handle attaching means; a tie rod connecting the handle means and running gear frame; and a thumb nut on said tie rod for holding the bearing surfaces of said handle attaching means and handle means in tight abutting engagement under tension.
