This invention relates to nnprovementsin sewing machines and more particularly to omln'oidering and like attachments therefor. lhe ob ect of the invention is to provide an attachment of this character so constructed as to adapt it to be easily attached to and detached from the presser bar of a sewing machine and to be raised by the ac tion of the needle carrier from the pressure on the material as the needle is withdrawn from the latter, so as to permit the movement of the cloth or material in various vdi rections and to any desired distance, as the varying nature of the work being performed may require.

Another object is to provide an attachment of this character which is automatic in its adjustment to heavy and light fabrics.

Another object is to provide a device of this character so constructed as to prevent springing of the needle during the feeding back and forth of the material, while at the same time permitting a clear vision of the material being operated upon.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

This invention comprises an attachment for connection with the presser bar 3 from which the ordinary presser foot has been removed as unnecessary for the class of work to be performed by this attachment, and to provide for the substitution of said attachment. This attachment comprises a shank 5 having a laterally extending bifurcated arm 6 projecting from its upper end and which is designed to be engaged with the presser bar 3, the furcations of said arm being slipped into slides carried by the presserbar. This standard 5 has a laterally extending foot 7 at its lower end projecting in a direction opposite to that of the arm 6 and which is here shown substantially annular in form, with a lip 8 projecting from the front portion thereof and provided with an aperture 9 for the passage therethrough of the needle when the device is applied, said aperture being designed to form a guide for the needle andto prevent breakage thereof caused by springing, which is incident to the pulling of the material in darning. It is to be understood that the thread goes down through this aperture 9 and a side pull will be exerted on the foot and not on the needle, thereby preventing all possibility of the needle being sprung and broken. A large opening at the rear of the needle guiding opening 9 enables the operator to inspect the work being accomplished at all times, especially to observe the needle when it enters the material.

An l..-shaped member 10 extends laterally from one side edge of the shank 5, the long arm of said member being attached to the shank and preferably made integral therewith, while the short arm projects forwardly and has attached thereto an upstanding member 11, the stem 12 of which is of a length suitable to position the hook 13 at the free end thereof ready for engagement by tho laterally projecting screw 4 carried by the needle bar 2, when said needle bar is '1 raised sulliciently to cause the needle carried thereby to pass out of the material being sewed, said hook carrying member 11 being designed to form a stop extending into the path of the clamping screw of the needle bar, and thereby being raised with said screw on the raising of the needle bar so bar and lowered on the lowering thereof,

thus avoiding all necessity of the operator being compelled in any way to manipulate 'the attachment during the operation in x which it is employed.

It is of course understood that in darning, etching, embroidering, and similar Work, the operator does not use the feed movement of the sewing machine but it is essential, in order to perform good work, that pressure he applied to the material being sewed while the shuttle is passing through the loop of thread formed under the bedplate of the sewing machine. Otherwise, the machine will skip stitches and the work will be unsatisfactory. It will also be observed that this attachment is preferably constructed,

as shown, in a single piece which may be stamped out of sheetmetal and thus render the construction thereof very economical.

It will also be obvious from the above description that no stop will be necessaryv during the operation of this attachment for the purpose of raising or lowering the attachment, as it will automatically perform this operation without any skipping of stitches.

I claim as my -invention An attachment for sewing machines comprising a shank having a laterally extending bifurcated arm projecting from its upper end for attachment to the presser foot thereof, a laterally extending foot at the other end projecting in the direction opposite to that of said arm, said foot being substan-' tially annular in form and having a lip projecting from the front portion thereof, said lip being provided with an aperture for guiding the needle to'prevent breakage of the latter, an arm extending from oneside edge of said shank and integral therewith,

an additional arm projecting forwardly from the first named arm, a stem projecting upwardly from said additional arm, the free endiof said stem being integrally connected with a forwardly extending hook disposed in the path of the clamping screw of the needle bar, whereby the attachment is auto 'matically'raised by the latter.
