The f is mounted on :L Shaft 16,

In order that the operator may readily determine. when a plate is inl position at` the impression point, I
,impression point.
provide feeler means' acting upon the feed mechanism which will Igg'iv'e notice to the operator when the plate is positioned. This feeler means, in the particular machine shown, consists of a disk 18 lixed on the shaft 16 and having a`plurality 'of notches 19 in its periphery, there being two in the present instance illustrated, these notches being adapted to receive a feeler roller 20 mounted on an arm 21, pivotedat 22`to a f `bracket 23 of the main frame. l y1s pressed by a spring 241. Then now the The arm 21 operator turns the handle, 17 he continues the movement until he feels the action of the eeler roller dropping into one of the notches 19. "When this occurs he knows that the feed chain has been moved sulliciently to position one of the plates exactly at the This relieves the operator of exercising the care that would be necessary were the feeler device omitted. When the roller 20 drops into the notch 19 additional force will be necessary in order to turn the knob .over that-which is necesat the impression point.
` to the frame and extending under the chain Sary when' the rollery was simply bearing upon the periphery of the'disk 18, an'd the operator will thus have positive notice when an' address plate arrives in exact position The feed chain may be protected by a casing'25 attached from end to end. The idler 4 may be mounted in a. forli: or arm 26 pressed by a spring; 27, the fork sliding in a bearing 28.
'The inlzingr ribbon has its ends connected. with 'spools- 29', 30 mounted on a shaft 31,
` arranged 'adjacent the pivoted end of the impression arm and operated each time the impression arm rises by a pawl 32 pivoted on the 'impression arm and engaging, a ratchetwheel 33 mounted on the shaft 31. F rom the spools the ribbon passes forwardly to a point over the runway and then is turned about any suitable form of inclined moved each time that the impression arm is operated, and urtherthat the impression pression. operation of the plate feeding; mechanism, .it will be possible for the operator to s lnp ated v therefrom.
with form of handle is raised b whicl'i' is supplied 1n Vany suitable13 arm and the plate feed are operable independently ol? each other, so that the `oper-` ator may take any desired numbeno.n unpressions from the same address plate by simply allowing the plate feeding mechanism to remain inoperative, a Jfresh portion of the ribbon coming* into use foreach im- Furthermore by the independent any desired plate without making an 1mpression.
In order that the operator may read the plates readily as they leave the hoppertl may employ a 1nirror,.as at 37, arranged 1n upright position adjacent the hopper and over the run-way, the reflecting surface beino; that marked 38, or a mirror maybe arranged in rear of the runway at a point adjacent the hopper, as indicated at 39. These mirrors will enable the operator to read the plates, notwithstanding the fact that they may be yplaced in'themachine out of position for reading from the fliont,I
In machines 1n which the impression head is operated by hand there is a tendency with some operators for the impression head to rebound slightly and then deliver a second blow, resulting in a more or less blurred impression. In order to overcome this' objec tion I provide a handle'and impression arm of the'form shown in Fig. 6, in which the impression arm 12x is arranged as a separate member from the hand lever 15X, but is oper- This impression arm is pivotally mountedat 13X and the hand lever lxis also pivotally mounted at this point. A pin 40, fixed in the impressionarm, passes through an elongated opening 41 formed,
in the hand lever. The hand lever is provided with,` a projection or lug 42 adapted to come against a portibnV of the main frame at 4.3 when the hand lever is thrown down. In this action the impression arm will be carried down but the hand lever will be arrested before 'the 4downward movement or' the impression arm is completed. The impression arm, however, may complete its downward movement under the momentum givento it by the operation of the handle 15X, because the pin 40, which is ixed to the impression arm, is
v'free tomove in the elongated opening 41.
rlhe action therefore is that the'hand lever `will be arrested-by the-stop 112. The impresf sion arm will, under its momentum, continue downward, this beingpallowed'by the slot 41 and will, i'.ller'eiore,Vv make the impression. It will be perfectly `free to rebound but will' not strike thefsecond blow as. it would do werethe pressure of the hand applied directiy thereto. shar'f'vl 'v VThe result is a clear and defined print. .The lmpression arm the incenso manner, such for instance as shown in Fig. 2. The impression arm, while shown of a slightlydiierent shape from that shownin Fig. 2, and pivoted at a slightly different point, can'be of the same shape substantially 'as that shown in Fig. 2 and it can be pivoted at the same pointv as illustrated in Fig. 2.
After leaving the impression point the printing or address plates are delivered to a receiver at the left of Figs. 1 and 3.
What I claim as my invention is l. .In an addressing machine, a table having a runway for individual printingplates, an impression arm, inking ribbon mechas nism operatingin unison therewith, and an address plate feeder consisting of an endless member having plate engaging means, said feederfmoving the plates along the runway to and past the impression point, a rotary handle for operating the said member and a feeler device for determining the location of an address plate at the printing point.

In an addressing machine, a table have ing a runway for individual printing plates, an impression arm, ,inking ribbon mechanism operating in unison therewith, an endless member for feeding address plates, a drive wheel for 'said member, to operate the saine to move the plates along the runway to and past the impression point, a shaftflfor the drive wheel extending to the front of the machine, a rotary handle on the shaft, and a feeler device consisting of a disk on the shaft having notches and a spring pressed arm engaging said notches, substantially as described.
3. In combination, an impression arm pivoted at its rear end and swinging downwardly and forwardly to make the impressions, an inling ribbon operated therefrom,
and a plate feed for independent address.
said\arm and handle turning about the same f pivot, means for arrestingthe movement of the handle, a .loose connection between the.
