I ANTIGBEEPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 18, 1916.
Application filed June 1, 1914. Serial N 0. 842,299.
To all whom it may concern:
citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomdale, in the county of Wood, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Anticreepers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in attachments for railway rails, and particularly to attachments for preventing creeping of the rails.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a device for preventing the creeping of railway rails which can be effectively locked in position.
Other objects andadvantages will be apparent from the following description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is an elevation of my device in position, the railway rail being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the device on a line transversely of the rail. Fig.3 is a vertical sectional 'view on the line :3-,3 of Fig. ,1. Fig. 4: is a perspective view of the locking key or wedge. I I
It is a well known fact that the tendency of railway rails to creep is particularly noticeable on double track lines where the trains all run in one direction and is especially troublesome on grades. The attempts usually made toovercome this move ment consists chiefly in applying a clamp to the, foot flange of the rail, the clamp being provided with a foot to abut against the adjacent tie, so that when the rail tends to creep, the tie receives the pressure through the foot. this form of anticreeper, chief among which is that the jaws of the clamp soon relax, thereby allowingthe rail to creep as before.
To overcome these objections is the principal object of my invention.
Referring particularly to the accompany An] anti-creeping Various objections are made to I ing drawings, 10 represents the shank or Be it known that I, VENA A. MILLER, a
stem of the device which is disposed transversely under the base of the rail 11 and adjacent the tie. At one end of the stem or shank is formed a head 13 which is approximately in the shape of a hook and engages with one edge of the basal flange of the rail.
.A series of corrugations or teeth 1A are formed within the hook for biting engagement with the edge of the base of the rail. At the opposite end of the shank is an enlarged head 15 formed with a downwardly extending weighted brace. The upper portom of which there are formed the serrations 21. This channel receives the opposite side of the base of the rail, and as the wedge key is driven through the recess these teeth bite intothe rail and force the same tightly into the hook 18. 'On the smaller end of the key is a finger or lip 22 which is adapted to be bent upwardly after the key is driven in so as to engage against one side of the hook 17 and prevent loosening or removal of the key. It will be noted that the channelside of the key is parallel with the edge of the rail and that the serrated bottom wall of the channel bears against this edge of the base-of the rail at all points, while the opposite side of the key inclines toward the lip 22, and engages a correspondingly inclined face in the I hook 17 Vhatis claimed is: 7
device comprising a shank disposed transversely beneath the basal flange of a rail, a flange engaging hook .member carried by one end of the shank, a
larger hook member carried by the opposite end of the shank for the reception of the oppositeside of the basal flange, a channeled wedge key disposed between the larger hook andthe basal flange and receiving the said flange in the channel, the smaller hook memher and the channel of the key being formed with teeth for biting, engagement with the In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, edge faces of the basal flange of the rail, in the presence of two Witnesses. and a lip formed on the smaller end of the VENA A. MILLER. Wedge key bent at right angles to the key and WVitnesses: 5 against one side face of vthe larger, hook v JQHN,1\I. STEOKER, member CARL W. BROWN.
