To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, (Mason WV. BRENIZER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coin-Controlled Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in coin-controlled machines.
The object of my invention, primarily, is to provide a novel, simple and eflicient coincontrolled mechanism which may be duplicated in a single vending machine and the duplicated mechanisms operated by a single hand operated part in accordance with the presence or absence of coins in the different mechanisms to dispense articles to be vended from different magazines in the machine; and a further object of my invention is to construct, combine and arrange the several elements in a novel manner whereby various advantages are gained. Accordingly, my invented machine consists of elements and the combinations of them hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved machine, the ends hereof being broken away. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof, on line 2 Fig. 3 is a front view of a part of the machin frame and two adjacent coin-operated, movable members and adjacent parts. Fig. l is a rear view of a part of the machine frame and two adjacent coin operating arms, the latches operated thereby and adjacent parts. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section, on line 5-5 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a horizontal section, on line 66 of Fig. 3. Fig. 7 is a vertical section, on line 77 of Fig. 3. Referring to the drawings, 3 designates the machine frame in which is located a plurality of separate, vertically-disposed magazines 4.- in which the packages or articles 6 to be vended are stacked, one upon the other, as shown. Each stack of articles is supported upon a plate 9 which forms the bottom of the magazine and which is operated by my improved coin-controlled mechanism to dispense the articles successively from the bottom of the magazine. and the upper face of the floor portion 12 is adapted to receive and support a coin 14 inserted edgewise through a slot 15 in a front plate 16 on the frame 3, and into the space between the side plates of the member 11. 'The machine frame is provided with a fixed coin-engaging part 17 directly in rear of the slidable member 11 and extending across the space between the side of the The coin-engaging part 17 is located above and spaced from the upper coin-engaging face of the floor portion 12, so that when the slidable member 11 is in the normal position, shown in Fig. 8, and a coin 1% is inserted through the slot 15 into the member 11, the coin 14 will extend across the space between the floor portion 12 and rest against the part 17 and upon the eX- tension 13 of the floor portion 12 and will be held in vertical position between the side plates of the slidable member 11, as shown in Fig. 8.
The slidable member 11 is held normally in the position shown in Fig. 8 by a spring 18, the upper end of which is attached to a part of the machine frame and the lower end of which is attached to the member 11. The member 11 is adapted to be moved downwardly against the action of the spring 18 from the normal position shown in Fig. 8 to the position shown in Fig. 9, and when the member 11 is thereafter released, the spring 18 will return it to the normal position against a stop 19. Within the space between the side plates of the slidable member 11 is the free end of a coin-engaging arm 20 secured on and projecting from a horizontal shaft 21 which is located rearwardly of the slidable member 11 and is mounted to turn in suitable bearings on the machine frame. The shaft 21 is adapted to be turned by a hand-operated arm 22secured to the shaft 21 and projecting forwardly of the forward wall of the machine frame or casing and through a suitable slot therein. The arms 20 and 22 are held raised in the normal position shown in Fig. 8 by a spring 23, one end of which is attached to the hand arm 22 and the other end of which is attached to the machine frame. that by lowering the arm 22 by hand, the shaft 21 may be turned to move the coinengaging arm 20 down from the normal position shown in Fig. 8, to the position shown in Fig. 9, and that when the hand arm 22 is thereafter released, the spring 23 will return the arms 20 and 22 to the normal position shown in Fig. 8. When the coinengaging arm 20 is in the normal position above the coin 14 resting on the floor portion 12, as shown in Fig. 8, the shaft 21, arm 20, part 17 and floor 12 are so positioned relatively to each other that when a coin 14 of the proper diameter to operate the machine is inserted into the slidable member 11 and the hand arm 22 is then operated to lpwer the coin-engaging arm 20, the arm 20 will engage the top of the coin 14 and force it down and rearwardly through the space between the floor portion 12 and fixed part 17, thereby forcing the slidable member 11 down to the position shown in Fig. 9, and the further downward movement of the arm 20 will discharge the coin 14 from between the floor 12 and fixed part 17 at the rear of the member 11 and into a coin-receiving chamber within the machine casing.
When the slidable member 11 has been moved down to the position shown in Fig. 9, as just explained, it is held in such position by a latch 23, during the return of the arms 20 and 22 to normal position by the spring The latch 23 is pivoted, at 24, on a bracket of the machine frame, and the It will thus be seen lower end of the latch, is pressed toward the member 11 by a suitable spring 25. The upper end of the latch 23 is adjacent to the arm 20 and is adapted to be acted upon by a part 26 of the arm 20, as will be presently explained. When the slidable member 11 is depressed to the position shown in Fig. 9, a notch 27 in the member 11 is brought into registry with the lower end of the latch 23 which thereupon enters the notch 27 and retains the member 11 down during the upward movement of the arms 20 and 22 until they reach the position shown in Fig. 10, just before they reach the normal position shown in Fig. 8; and, as the arms 20 and complete their upward movement, the
part 26 of the arm 20 acts against the upper end of the latch 23 and moves the lower end thereof from the notch 27, freeing the member 11 and permitting its return to normal position by the spring 18 for a succeeding operation.
The lower end of the slidable member 11 is shaped to form an arm or tooth 28 which is adapted to enter between and act upon two diverging arms 29 and 30 projecting from a shaft 31 which is mounted to turn in bearings in the machine frame. The shaft 31 carries the bottom plate 9 of the adjacent magazine 4; and the arms 29 and 30 are so.
related to the tooth 28 and plate 9 that just as the member 11 completes its downward movement to the position shown in Fig. 9, the tooth 28will act upon the arm 29 to move the plate 9 or permit it to move to the position shown in Fig. 9, thereby discharging the lowermost article 6 from the adjacent magazine 4 and into a suitable tray 32 formed in the machine frame. The plate 9 has an extension 33 arranged to enter the magazine 4 directly above the article 6 being discharged and prevent the discharge of more than one article each time the plate 9 is operated. The return of the member 11 to the normal position causes the tooth 29 to act against the arm 30 and raise the plate 9 to and retain it in normal position shown in Figs. 2, 7 and 8.
By constructing the floor portion 12 with the upward extension 13, I so shape the upper or coin-engaging face of the floor portion 12 with relation to the fixed coin-engaging part 17 that if the arm 20 should be raised after it has forced the coin l4 and member 11 part way down and before the tooth 28 reaches the arm 29, a binding action against the coin 14 will occur between the floor 12 and part 17 and prevent the spring 18 from returning the member 11 to the normal position until the arm 20 has been operatedto depress the member 11 to the position shown in Fig. 9 and discharged the coin. This construction prevents a true coin from operating the plate 9 more than once, and prevents a false coin of smaller diameter than a true coin, from depressing the, member 11 far enough to operate the plate 9 to discharge an article 6.
The shaft 21 extends substantially the full length of the machine and carries all the coin-operating arms 20 for the mechanisms of the dilferentmagazines 4, and the shaft 21 is provided with a single hand arm 22,,so that when the hand arm 22 is depressed it will operate any one or more of the coin-controlled mechanisms into which a coin has been inserted.
The slot 15 through which the coin 14 is inserted is kept normally closed by an in wardly-opening hinged door 35 which is held in the closed position against the inner face of the plate 16 by a suitable spring 36 against which the door 35 is opened by the coin 14 when it is inserted through the slot 15. The door 35, when closed, permits the member 11 to move up and down, and, when opened, the door moves into a cut-out portion 37 of the member 11, so that should a wire or other narrow instrument be. passed 7 through the S19 15 and; pressedagainst. the
top of the floor portion 12, the upper wall 38 of the cutout portion 37 will engage the top of the door 35 and prevent downward movement of the member 11 before the tooth 28 reaches the arm 29 to discharge an article (3 from the adjacent magazine a. I claim:
1. In a coin-controlled machine, the combination of a supporting frame having a coin-engaging part, a movable member guided in said frame and having a coin-en gaging face spaced from said part, a spring holding said member yieldingly in a normal position, a coin-engaging arm movable from and back to a normal position and toward and from the space between said part and said face and adapted to force a coin into said space and thereby move said member from its normal position, hand engaging means adapted to move said arm, and a latch adapted to engage and retain said member against the action of its spring when said member is moved from its normal position, said arm having means to operate said latch to release said member when said arm is returned to normal position.
2. In a coin-controlled machine, the combination of a supporting frame, a member mounted to slide vertically in said frame and including two side members and a floor portion having an upper coin-engaging face, said side members being adapted to receive a coin edgewise therebetween, said frame having a coin-engaging part above and spaced from said face, said part and said face being adapted to support a coin between said side members, a coin-engaging .arm above and movable between said side members and toward and from the space between said part and said face and adapted to force a coin into said space and thereby move said members, and hand-engaging means operative to move said arm.
3. In a coincontrolled machine, the combination of a supporting frame, a member mounted to slide vertically in said frame and including two side members and a floor portion having an upwardly-extending forward portion and an upper coin-receiving face, said side members being adapted to receive a coin edgewise therebetween, said frame having a coin-engaging part rearwardly of said member and above and spaced from said face, said part and said face being adapted to support a coin between said side members, a coinengaging arm above'and movable between said side members and toward and from the space between said part and said face and adapted to force a coin into said space and thereby move said members, and hand-engaging means operative to move said arm.
4-. In a coin-controlled machine, the combination of a supporting frame including a part having a coin-receiving slot therein, a movable member guided in said frame, coin controlled means for moving said member, and a spring pressed door normally closing said slot, said member having a part adapted to engage said door and prevent movement of the member when the door is out of its normal position.
5. In a coin-controlled machine, the combination of a supporting frame, a member mounted to slide vertically in said frame and including two side members and a fioor portion having an upwardly-extending forward portion and an upper coin-receiving face, said side members being adapted to receive a coin edgewise therebetween, said frame having a coin-engaging part rearwardly of said member and above and spaced from said face, said part and said face being adapted to support a coin between said side members, a coin-engaging arm above and movable between said side members and toward and from the space between said part and said face and adapted to force a coin into said space and thereby move said members, and hand-engaging means operative to move said arm.

In a coin-controlled machine, the combination of a supporting frame, a member mounted to slide vertically in said frame and including two side members and a floor portion having an upper coin-engaging face, said side members being adapted to receive a coin edgewise therebetween, said frame having a coin-engaging part above and spaced from said face, said part and said face being adapted to support a coin between said side members, a coinengaging arm above and movable between said side members and toward and from the space between said part and said face and adapted to force a coin into said space and thereby move said members, hand engaging means adapted to move said arm, and a latch adapted to engage and retain said member against the action of its spring when said member is moved from its normal position, said arm having means to operate said latch to release said member when said arm is returned to normal position.

In a coin-controlled machine, the combination of a supporting frame. a member mounted to slide vertically in said frame and including a floor portion having an upwardlyextending forward portion and an upper coin-receiving face, said frame having a coin-engaging part rearwa dly of said member and above and spaced from said face, said part and said face being adapted to receive and support a coin edgewise over the space between them, a coin-engaging 1 arm above and movable toward and from said space andadapted to force a coin into the same and thereby move said member, hand engaging means adapted to move said arm, and a latch adapted to engage and retain said member against the action of its spring When said member is moved from its In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
