IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED GAUGES AND TRV-SQUARES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,805, dated July 11, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, FREDERIC CASTLE, of Montana, in the county of Boone and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Gauges and Try-Squares; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specification, in whichw Figure l is a perspective of my device, in use, looking from the front. Fig. 2 is a similar view, looking from the rear.

The nature of this invention relates to an improved construction of an implement for gangin the length of weather-boards in siding a house, and which will sustain in its proper position the board being gauged, and is more especially designed as an improvement upon a device for a similar purpose as secured to me by Letters Patent issued to me on the 21st day of March, 1,871.

The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of certain set-screws, by means of which the apparatus is made to vary to iit difierent thicknesses of casings, as more fully hereinafter described.

In the accomjintnying drawing, A represents the stock ofthe clamp, provided with a shoulder, a', the thickness of the lower edge of a weatherboard. B a stud, projecting' laterally from the stock, just below the shoulder a. C are two thin metallic dogs, one of them being secured to the rear face of the stock, and projecting` above the shoulder a, while the other is secured to the rear face of the stud B, and projects above it, both said dogs being upon the same plane. D is a lever, journaled in a mortise in the stock, near its lower end, and to it is secured the sharpened dog E in such a manner that closing the lever onto the stock will compel the dog forcibly to project through the mortise in the stock, and a reverse motion of the lever will withdraw the dog. The

corner boards of the frame and the two lower courses ofweather-boards bein gin place, the stock is secured to the building1 by inserting the two dogs C under the lap of the upper board, the stud B being brought up against the corner board. The lever is then closed in on the stock, when the dog E is forced into the board opposite the mortise, thereby holding the stock firmly in place. F is another stud, of the same length as the stud B, projecting laterally from the bracket G, in the same direction, the former being upon the plane of the front of the stock, while the latter slides on the rear face of the same. G is a bracket, adjustably secured to the upper part of the face of the stock by a set-screw, b, passing through a slot, c, in the stock. This bracket supports the board to be gauged, and determines its lap over the one in position, and this may be varied by moving the bracket up or down, as desired. H is a square, whose short arm is slotted, as shown in Fig. l, and is adjustably secured to the stud l" by a set-screw, d, passing through said slot into the stud, so that the square may be moved laterally or inclined to the right or left. I J Iare set-screws, the former passing through the stud B near its outer end, and the latter, in' like manner, passing through the bracket G nea-r its upper end, in order to compel the device to t different thicknesses of casings.

There should be two of these devices, alike in every particular, except that the one for the opposite end of the'siding should have its studs project in the opposite direction 5 or, in .other words, they should be in pairs, one right-hand and the other left.

In practice, it is found that the device secured in the manner described in the Letters Patent hereinbefore referred to will rock and not be held firmly while in operation, and that it will not work efficiently with diiierent thicknesses of casings. This rocking and inefficiency are avoidedin the device now presented.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination of the stud B, bracket Cr, and set-screws I and J, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
