GEORGE M. WILLIS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO
CHICAGO ELECTRIC METER ILLINOIS, V
COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF RHEOSTAT.
Specification of Letterslatent.
Patented Jan. 11, 1916.
Application filed February 24, 1911. Serial No. 610,572.
To, all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. WILLIS, "a,
'improved Rheostat, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.- I
My invention relates to an improved form of rheostats and its object is to provide a simple and durable apparatus which canbe economically manufactured.
The several drawings illustrating my invention are; as follows: v Figure 1 is a plan View of the rhe'ostat of my invention. Fig.
line 2-2'of Fig. 1 and looking in the direction indicated by the arrows. Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation of the devices of my invention.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
An insulated helical coil of wire is illustrated at 4 wound around a core 5 and ter; minating at each end in binding posts 6 and As is clearly shown in Fig. 2, the wire 4 is preferably stripped of insulation as shown at 8,providing a contact surface for the stud 9 carried by the clip 10. The'clip is provided with two horizontal projections through which a bolt 11 is passed, a nut 12 serving to clamp said projections together,
securing the clip to the coil and also serving as a binding post. It will be readily seen that the clip can. be adjusted longitudinally of the coil by merely releasing nut 12 and sliding the clip to the desired position, where the nut is again tightened to afi'ord electrical engagement between the wire 4 and the engaging stud 9.
The clip 10 is so conformed with relation to the 0011" that it will engage the coil at two points directly opposite each other, thereby assuring a positive engagement between the stud and wire 4:.
hat I claim is.
1. A rheostat comprising in combination a supportlng core of polygonal cross section, a coil wound around said core from end to end, insulation around said coil except on one side thereof, a clip conformed to have an aperture corresponding to the cross section of said core fitted over said core and coil and movable thereon, a contact carried by the clip held ata'll times adjacent to the uninsulated side of said coil, and means for tightening said clip at any desired position around said core and coil.
2. A rheostat comprising in combination a supporting core, a coil wound around said core from end to end, insulation covering said coil except on one side thereof, said core, coil and insulation'constituting a structure havinga polygonal cross section, a clip of correspondingly polygonal conformation arranged to fit over-said structure, a contact element carried by said clip and always retained adjacent to the uninsulated side of said coil, and means for securing said clip 'at any one of a plurality of positions upon said structure to determine the position of said contact element along the uninsulated side of said coil.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 10th day of February, A. D.
GEORGE M. WILLIS.
Witnesses:
