Specification of Letters Patentl Patgnted Jan, 4, 1916 Application field December 3,1913. Serial No. 804,348
' of Malden in the county of'Middlesex and andcollapsible type used for advertising 7 United States,
Massachusetts, a citizen of the have lnvented a new and use State of ful Improvement in which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in explaining its nature.
My invention relates to an improvement in display stands or easels ofthat extensible purposes. 7 e
More essentially my invention relates to that type of display stand having a display front supported by collapsible and extensible back supporting members, the special object of my invention being to provide improved means for combining or uniting these members by which the extended position thereof and of the stand will be defined and 'releasably maintained when the members are moved to occupy such position.
My invention can best be seen and understood by reference to the drawings in which theinvention is shown applied to different types of display stands for the purpose of illustrating the adaptability thereof and in which- Figure 1 is a plan of a display stand have ing a display front or mounting occupying a single plane, the stand being shown ina collapsed position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of thestand when occupying an extended position. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 44 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a display stand "of a modified type or one presenting a steppedv display front or mountings occupying different planes. Fig.
6 is a rear elevation thereof taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a section on the line 7-7 of Fig. 5. Fig. 8 is a plan of the stand shown in Fig. 5 when occupying a collapsed position. Fig. 9 is a section on the line 9-9 of Fig. 8.
Referring to the drawings :In Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, 1 represents the display front or mounting on which the advertising matter is displayed and'which occupies a single plane, the display stand or easel, in other words, being one of the most simple type. The front 1 is supported by collapsible and extensible supporting members or pieces 2 Display-Stands, of
and 3," respectively. The adaptability of these members is such that they may occupy an extended position as shown in Figs. 2 and 4 when they are operating to support the front or may be turnedwith relation to the front to overlap one another and occupya with the front as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. Combination is effected between the front and its supporting members 2 and 3 by means of a piece 4 connecting the forward edges of the respective members and to which the front is pasted or otherwise se cured. The members 2 and 3 have' flexible connection with the connecting piece 4 so that they -may turn. with relation thereto and to the front as aforesaid. I prefer as shown that themembers 2, 3 and connecting piece 4 be struck'from a single sheet of ma terial and that the flexible connection between the parts be obtained simply by scoring the material. I prefer, also, that each ofthe members 2 and 3 be so scored that they. may be bent along lines 5 in order that the membersmay be foldedv to overlap one another when collapsed"substantially as collapsed position, substantially parallel shown in Fig. 1, thus occupying a limited space when folded. her 2 of the respective supporting members is an inwardly. extending tongue 6. This tongue is struck from the member 2 at a point inwardly removed from its outer edge and has such lateral yielding that the. member 3 may be slipped inback of the tongue to be retained by it when the members are moved to occupy their extended position.
In order thatthe member 3 may properly cooperate with the tongue to be retained by it, a slot is cut in the edge of this member, the slot being definedby an inward edge 7 and side edges 8, 8, respectively. The disposition of these edges is otherwise such that as the respective members are moved to assume an extended position the edge 7 of the member 3 will draw beneath the tongue, the respective edges 8, 8 thereof slipping by the sides of the under side of the tongue until the edge 7 engages the tongue, which defines the full and proper extended position of the respective members. At this time the tongue will frictionally bear against that portion of the member 3 just forward of the edge! thereof, which Struck from the mem while the bearing of the edges 8, 8 against the sides of the tongue assists in such retention.
In Figs. 5 to 9, inclusive, a modified structure of display stand or easel is shown, or that of the stepped type, in which a plurality of display frontsor mountings are employed superposed one above another and occupying different planes. In these figures 10 represents the several display fronts or mountings. These fronts are supported by collapsible and extensible supporting members l1 and 12, respectively. The adaptability of these members is such that they may occupy an extended position when the display stand is in its extended or display form, substantially as shown in Figs. 5 and 7, or may be turned to overlap one another and occupy a collapsed position, substan tially as shown in Figs. 8 and 9, where it will be observed that the respective supporting members and display fronts or mountings supported thereby lie flat substantially parallel with one another. Combination is effected between the mountings l0 and their supporting members 11 and 12 in the following manner: The front edges of the supporting members 11 and 12 are made stepped, imparting a gradually receding effect. That portion of the front edges of the respective members lying below the lust step is connected by a piece 14, the same being preferably integral with the members 11 and 12, and to this piece 14 the lower one of the mountings 10 is secured either by pasting or otherwise. The other mountings are secured to the front edges of the members 11 and 12 between the respective steps, which retention is preferably obtained by pasting or otherwise securing the mountings to flange pieces 15 which extend inwardly from the inner edges of the respective members lying between the steps. In order that the supporting members 11 and 12 may have easy collapsibility with relation to the respective mountings, the members are suitably scored at the points of the various joints.
The structure thus far described in Figs. 5 to 9, inclusive, is well known to those skilled in the art and may be varied in various details of construction. The essential point to which I desire to call attention is that a display stand or easel of the stepped type, or one formed substantially as described above, may be maintained in a proper extended position in precisely the same manner as the easel first described, for it will be observed that the member 11 is provided with tongues 6 with which the other supporting member 12 is adapted to cooperate as the members are moved to occupy an extended position and by which tongue or tongues the full and proper extended position of the respective members is defined and releasably maintained until the stand or easel is collapsed.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States A display stand having a-display front, supporting members carried thereby and movable to occupy a rearwardly extending upright position angularly disposed with relation to one another and meeting along their rear edge portions, or a collapsed position with relation to one another and to said front, one of said members having a laterally yielding, inwardly extending tongue struck therefrom at a point inwardly removed from the rear edge of said member, the other of said members having in it a slot with inward and side edges, said slot being so located that when the members are occupying their extended upright position the tongue will bear frictionally against the outer side of the slotted member forward of the slot in it, the inward edge of the slot will bear against the under side of the tongue and the side edges of the slot against the respective sides of the tongue, substantially as described.
