Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, RoLLIN C. LEWIS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain safety which comes from looking the dial against turning, except by the use of a proper key for the guard lock.
A further object is to prevent any one from rotating the dial or setting it upon the proper combination without using the proper key for releasing the dial.
With these objects in view, my invention consists of a dial shield having an opening through which a limited number of the setting marks on a dial are visible at a time, and locking mechanism for locking the dial against rotation and also for locking the shield against removal from the dial ring.
It further consists in the details of con struction as will be more fully explained and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a dial with my improvement applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a view partly in section and partly in edge elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a rear view of the dial ring and shield thereon, also showing the rear end of the guard lock; Fig. 4 is a view showing the notch in the edge of the dial, and Figs. 5 and 6 are views of a modification.
1 represents the dial ring on which the dial 2 is mounted to rotate. The ring is secured to the vault or safe door in the usual and well known manner, and is cut away as at 3 and slotted as at 4, in its upper edge, to permit the cam on the pin tumbler guard lock, to be turned to enter the dial locking slot 5 in the rear face of the dial. The dial is mounted to rotate on the ring 1, and the slot 5 is located with relation to one of the marks on the dial so that the latter has to be turned into proper position before it can be locked, and after it has been locked it cannot be turned to set up the combination until it has been released by the actuation of the guard lock. The shield 6 is approximately the size of the dial ring, and is concavo convex so as to cover the setting marks on the dial without interfering with the free movements of the latter. The shield 6 is open at its center for the passage of the knob of the dial, and is provided at its top with a restricted opening 8, through which a limited number of the setting marks 011 the dial may be seen by one immediately in front of the shield, the portion of the open ing 8, through which the numbers on the dial shows, being of a size just suflicient to disclose the whole number, of a single mark and is preferably flanged as at 9 so as to conceal the said number except fro-m directly in front.
Secured to the shield 6 is the guard lock 10, which in the present instance, is a pin tumbler lock. The cylinder or casing of lock 10 is secured to or integral with the shield 6, and the rear end of said cylinder rests within the cut away portion 3 of the dial ring. The plug of the lock 10 is actuated by a key in the usual manner, and is provided at its inner end with a cam 11, which normally rests within the slot 4 in the dial ring and locks the upper end of the shield to the ring. The lower end of the shield is provided with a finger or spur 12, shown in section in Fig. 2, which rests within a recess in the lower edge of the dial ring 1 and operates, in connection with the cam on the key plug of the guard lock, to lock the shield to the ring. The cam 11 normally rests within the slot 4 in the ring 1 and assists in holding the shield in position over the dial, and when the key plug of the guard lock is turned by the key the cam 11 will be turned downwardly and enter the recess or slot 5 in the rear face of the dial, as shown in Fig. 2, and thus positively lock the dial against rotation, hence in order to set up the combination the dial must be released by the key of the guard lock 10.
From the foregoing it will be seen that when the dial is locked, it cannot be turned to set up the combination until after it has been released by a proper key, and the 0011- struction of the shield is such that none of the marks 011 the dial can be seen except by one standing immediately in front of the dial, and close up to the opening in the shield, thus preventing anyone who may be Within View of the safe or vault, from obtaining the combination on which the lock is set. Instead of providing the shield with a spur 12, the lower end of the shield may be secured to the dial ring by screw 12 shown in Figs. 5 and 6.
It is evident that many slight changes might be'resorted to in the relative arrangement of parts shown and described Without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. Hence I would have it understood that I'do not wish to confine myself to the exact construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, but
Having 'fully described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Lettors-Patent, is:-
1. The combination of a lock dial, a shield constructed to expose a portion only of the marks on the dial and a guard lock located at a point outside of the periphery of the dial and having means engaging the dial for locking the same against rotation.
2. The combination of a lock dial, a shield having an opening through which a portion only of the marks on the dial may be seen at one time, and aguard lock carried by said shield for locking the dial against rotation.
3. The combination of a dial, a shield covering the marked portion of same, the said shield having an opening for exposing a limited number of the marks, and a guard lock rigid with said shield for locking the dial against rotation.
e. The combination of a dial ring, a dial, a shield detachably secured to the dial ring and covering the marked portion of the dial, the said shield having an opening for exposing a limited number of dial marks, and a guard lock secured to said shield and having means for engaging the dial ring for locking the shield to the latter.
5. The combination of a dial ring, a dial, a shield secured to the ring and covering the marked portion of the dial, the said shield having an opening for exposing a limited number of dial marks, and a. guard lock carried by said shield and having means to engage the dial for locking the same against turning movement.
