incassa.
State of New Jersey, have invented a new in boxes with the object in v iew of provid# aud useful Improvement in Boxes,` ofv lwhich the following is 'a specification. My invention relates'to an improvement ing a boX havingva hinge Vconnecting the means of concealing the hinge at the -jointv formed thereby, Fig.2,1represents a central'.
represents a central section Vcorresponding to* the coverby 2. The body and cover arey body and cover, said body and cover having separate coverings of a suitable y material which is so arranged as to conceal -the hinge between the body and cover. p
A further'object is to provideva box which struction' and economical "inl-,the -manufac-r l, the accompanying draw# ings, in which-- Figure 1 represents a rear elevationof a ybox having a bod-yandl cover hinged together and closed,'illust rating my improved section'taken in the plane ofthe line A-A of Fig. l, Fig.'3 represents a transversecen-v tral section looking toward the rear, Fig.4
Fig. 2 with'the cover shown open, and Fig.
5 represents adetail central' section correy spoiiding toFig. 2 of a modified form.
'The 4body of the box'is denoted byl and provided with separate suitable coverings 3, 4, such als' plush, velvet, linen or paper. 'lhe edgesofthe. covering 3 on the body 1 are'turned in and secured to the wallsin' 4.0 any well knownaiid approved manner. f
Aportion of the covering 3 at the-back'v is extended upwardly, a's'slown at 6, in Figs.
2, 3 and 4, and into-the cover 2. 'llhe edges of the covering 4 on .tliecover 2 are turned in and'secured to the rim 7;
rlhe body andcover are hinged together I by means of a hinge comprising two leaves '8, 9.` `'llhe leaf 8 is secured to the rear wall of the body l by means of ametal strap 10, the ends of whichr are passed ,through slots in the rear wall 5 andleaf- 8 and turned back upon the leaf in opposite directions, thusv serving to hold the body and leaf lfirmly together. The leaf 9 of the hinge is secured to the cover 2 by means of a strap 11, the

` will pass" through the turned in edg'ebf the covering 4 and the upwardly extending portionY-lof the covering 3, thereby firmly se` curingthe parts together. Thus it will -be seen v'thatthe upwardly extended portion 6, being securely fastened to the cover,'hugs andconceals the highe'd portion of the leaves. atthejoint'forined by the/body and v 1 whether the box'is open or closed. will be. completely covered, simple injjcon-v cover,
lnjthefniodiedform shown in Fig. 5, the hingigg'eoly portion lof the leaves is concealed by l Y a doi'VIlWaIdly extended portion 12 of the A practical embodiment of l,my invention 20 is represented in covering-f4, `which portion is firmly secured between. the turned in edge of the'covering Scand thel'eafS; .The metal strap l0 passes ;'-through the 'rear -wall' turned iii' edgefofthe covering 3, the downvwardly extended` portion. 12, the leaf 8, and
to lfirmly se- -is turned "-b'ackcupon.- the leaf cure the parts together.
A spring v=13 is heldin position by rivets '14, 15, (assingthrough fears 16,17, formed integra `with .the spring and odset therefrom, 'and secured-,to the'leaf 8 of the hinge. The spring'13 is offset for the pur ose of receiving ai springt. engaging mein er 18, vwhich-'fissecured to the leaf 9-by a rivet 19, and! provided with shoulders 20,` 21, which, in the present instance,.are shown as abutlments, which are turned back from the body of the spring engaging member.'
The spring engaging member 18 extends downwardly from the `leaf 9, so that 'the shoulders will come finto contact with the spring V13 and force ,it forwardly asthe cover is :opened vor closed. |The shoulders 20, 21, are so located that `the spring willpress them rearwardly at all times, thereby putting tension upon the vcover so as to hold it either openxor closed. When the cover is `closed, as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 5, the shoulders arebelowl the hinge pintle, the s ring thereby holding it closed. When t e cover is open, as shown in Fig." 4,. the shouldersare above the hinge pintle and the spring thereby holds it open. A tongue 22 is formed'between the shoulders 2021, andadapted to engage a slot 23 cut in the free end of the spring for limitofthe body, the v ing the rearward movement of the cover, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. Y
'hile I have shown and described the means for concealing the hinge as applied to a self-opening and closing box. I wish it to be understood that it may be applied to any box having a two member hinge thereon.
It is evident that slight changes might be resorted to in the form. construction and arrangement of the several parts withouttlepartng from the spirit and scope of my inventien: hence I lo not wish to limit myselt' strictly to the structure herein set forth,
but A `What I claim is:- y
1. A box having body and cover members, a hinge having a leaf secured to each of said members. a separate covering for each of said members. the covering for one of May. 1911.
said members passing between one leaf of the hinge and the opposite member for concealing the hinge.
:2. A box having body and cover members, a hinge having avleaf secured to each of said members', a separate covering for each of said members. a portion of the covering for the body member passing between'the cover member and its hinge leaf for concealing the hinge.
In testimony. that I claim the foregoing as my invention. I have Signed my name in presence of two witnesses, this sixth day of LOUIS A. NEGRAvAL.
'itnesses:
F. GEORGE BARRY, C. S. SUNDGREN.
