Description
@2M i PATENTED- JUL 41871 UNITED STATES TENT OFFICE.
RAN SOME N. FRANCIS AND RUSSEL FRANCIS, OF GIRARD, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN ROTARY ENGINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,582, dated July 4, 1871.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, RANsoME N. FRANCIS and RUSSEL FRANCIS, of Girard, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rotary Engines; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in rotary steam-engines, and consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a sectional side elevation, the section being taken on the line a: of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation taken on the line 1/ y of Fie'. 1, showing a double cylinder and the valve-motion.
Similar letters of' reference indicate correspon ding parts.
A is the bed-plate. B is the cylinder-casing attached to the bed, and held stationary by the stands C C. D D are the cylinders, equal in diameter, and arranged side by side, as seen in Fig. 2. Each cylinder has a single piston, and an induction and exhaust-valve. E E are the exhaustports, and F F the induction-ports. G G are the stea1n-chests. H is a piston in each cylinder, one being seen in dotted lines. The mode of operating` the valves is seen in Fig. 2. I I are the double valves that is, an induction and exhaust-valve for each cylinder-operated alternately by means ofthe eccentric grooves J J (on the shaft) and the levers K K. L is an abutment foreach cylinder, operated by the eccentric grooves m m. on the outer sides of the revolving piston-wheel N, the latter being secured firmly to the shaft O. In Fig. l an abutment is seen closing one of the cylinders, and the piston in position for taking steam. The abutment-s work alternately.
When one piston is operatin g under the pressure of steam the other cylinder is exhausting the steam, so that the steam pressure is constant.
By this arrangement there can be no dead-centers, or no loss of power caused thereby.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The arrangement of the steam-chests G G, valves I, abutments L, eccentric grooves J and m, casing B, piston-wheel N, and shaft O, substantially as and for the purposes described.
RANSOME N. FRANCIS. RUSSEL FRANCIS.
