To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Cr-IARLns MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locomotive-Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to locomotive boilers, and the object of my invention is to construct a locomotive boiler which will have a combustion chamber located between the fire box and front end of the boiler on a horizontal plane with the fire box, and by which much larger tubes may be used, from the fire box to the combustion chamber than from the combustion chamber to the front end of the boiler and the water bars or arch tubes usually used in the fire box may be eliminated, and also the bricks at the rear of the fire box may also be eliminated and the tubes Welded to the rear end of the fire box to prevent a tendency of leakage.
Other objects of my invention will be found later in the specifications.
I obtain these objects by means of the mechanism illustrated in my drawings, in which,-

Referring to the drawings, A. represents a fire box of a locomotive boiler made in the usual way, except that it has no water bars or arch tubes as are usually used. At the end of the fire box are the tubes B B B. These tubes are of the usual kind used for generating steam in a locomotive boiler; the ends of the tubes are attached to the rear end of the fire box by welding and the fire bricks, such as are usually used, are eliminated. The tubes B B B extend from the fire box to the combustion chamber C. The tubes B B B conduct the fire to the combustion chamber C; much smaller tubes extend from the combustion chamber C. to the front of the boiler than from the fire box to the combustion chamber (3., for instance, if the tubes B B B from the fire box to the combustion chamber C. should be one hundred in number and four inches each in Specification of Letters Patent.

diameter the tubes from the combustion chamber C. to the front of the boiler should be four hundred in number and two inches each in diameter.
D. is a tube designed for an outlet from the combustion chamber to the bottom bf the boiler. This tube may be closed in any suitable manner and may be used for blowing out by the engine by means of a soot blower of any suitable design and construction.
E. is a man hole through the side of the boiler to admit a person into the combustion chamber for any desired purposes.
F. and G. are steam domes on top of the boiler. In case it is desired to use the boiler for a compound engine the steam may be conducted from one of the domes F. or G. with a low pressure cylinder instead of taking it from the front end of the boiler.
Made in this way, my locomotive boiler will be much more durable and less likely to leak by having the large tubes welded fast to the back of the fire box and the fire bricks eliminated, and the combustion chamber C. will take up the contraction and expansion of the fines by reason of the sides of the chamber being attached to the outer shell of the locomotive by means of sleeve bolts and this will make the locomotive boiler last longer than boilers as ordinarily made.
What I claim as my invention and. desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
In a locomotive boiler; an exterior shell; a fire box; a combustion chamber upon a horizontal plan to said fire box, and at a distance therefrom; tubes leading from said fire box to said combustion chamber; said tubes, welded to the rear end of said fire box, coming directly in contact with the fire in said fire box without the intervention of the fire bricks; said combustion chamber being fastened to the shell of said boiler by bolts and sleeves; two or more domes on the upper surface of said boiler, substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
