Description
I. C. HUB 81 F. M. CASE.
TAB STOCK. APPLICATION FILED FEB. 20,1914.
Patented Dec. 21, 1915.
JOHN C. HUB AND lEN'CIS M. CASE, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO; SAID CASE ASSIGNOB TO SAW HUB.
TAB-STOCK.
Application filed February 20, 1914.. Serial No, 819,897.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN C. HUB and FRANCIS M. CAsE, citizens of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tab-Stock, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in stock for use in forming tabs for index cards and sheets.
More specifically the invention relates to tab stock comprising a main body celluloid strip preferably of the thickness of the cards and having amalgamated with it and on each side thereof side plate strips of celluloid with the edges of the three strips flush at one edge of the stock, and with the two side plate strips extending beyond the opposite edge to forni side plate portions which when tabs are cut from the stock will form plate portions for engaging the sides of the card.
It is also a feature of the stock to have one of the side plate strips extend beyond the other so that when the tabs are cut from the stock the side plate portions may be readily separated for the insertion of the card.
The invention may be further briefly summarized as consisting in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth in the following description, drawings and claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a strip with parts broken away; Fig. 2 is a section upon the line 22 of Fig. 1'; Fig. 3 is a side elevation with parts broken away showing a modified arrangement of stock; Fig. 4c is a section upon the line 4- of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a section upon the line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
Our invention may be carried out in any preferred manner, but we have shown an embodiment which is very effective, and in such arrangement 1 represents a main body strip of a thickness corresponding substantially to the thickness of the card or sheet which is to receive the tab and of a width such that the complete tab may be cut therefrom.
2 represents one side plate portion which is wider than the strip 1 and has one of its edges flush with one of the edges of the main body strip, the plate extending freely beyond the edge of the main body strip. Secured to the opposite side of the main Specification of Letters Patent.
body strip 1 is another side plate strip 3 of greater width than the two other strips and arranged with one of its edges flush with the flush edges of the two other strips. The three strips are amalgamated together by treating the central strip with alcohol on both sides and pressing the side plate strips against it and applying heat thereto, the action being such as to cause a complete amalgamation of the three strips and the formation of a homogeneous tab stock.. It is obvious that by having one side plate strip wider than the other there will be an extension of the wider side plate strip beyond the other side plate strip so that when the tabs are cut therefrom the side plate portions I may be easily separated for the insertion of the card.
In the modification shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5 the main body strip 4 is recessed or notched along one edge with recesses 5 preferably of the shape of a tab and to the sides of this main body strip 4 I secure the side plate strips 2 and 3. The three layers of celluloid in this case are amalgamated to form a homogeneous tab stock, and when the tabs are punched from the stock the stock is fed so that the recess 5 is in the proper position to form a pocket, as it were, for the tab of the card.
Having described our claim 1. As an article of manufacture, a tab stock comprising a main body strip of celluloid or similar material, and side plate stripe of celluloid wider than the main body strip, all of said strips being amalgamated to form a homogeneous tab stock.
2.'As an article of manufacture, a tab stock comprising a main body strip of celluloid or similar material, and side plate strips of celluloid wider than the main body strip, and both arranged to extend beyond the same edge of the main body strip, all of said strips being amalgamated to form a homogeneous tab stock.
3. As an article of manufacture, a tab stock comprising a main body strip of celluloid or similar material, and side plate strips of celluloid of difi'erentwidths and each of greater width than the main body strip and both arranged to extend beyond the same edge of the main body strip, all of said strips beinkg amalgamated to form a homogeneous stoc invention, we
4. As an article of manufacture, a tab stock comprising a main body strip of celluloid having tab notches along one edge, and side plate strips of celluloid amalgamated 5 therewith to form a homogeneous structure, said side plate stripsbeing of greater width than the main body strip.
I 5. As an article of manufacture, tab stock comprising a main body strip of celluloid 1 provided with recesses, and side plate strips amalgamated therewith to form a homogeneous structure, said side plate strips bemg of greater width than the main body strip.
In testimony whereof we affix our signa- 1r tures in presence of two witnesses as follows:
JOHN C. HUB. FRANCIS M. CASE.
Witnesses:
