To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HERMANN N liennn, a citizen of the German Empire, residing at Stuttgart, in the Kingdom of Wurttemberg, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gut and like Cleaning Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap pertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to a machine for cleaning gut and as compared with the machines at present employed is characterized particularly by its efficiency both as regards the thoroughness of the cleaning and also by the feature that the gut is cleaned more rapidly than hithertowith the least possible liability of being injured, the same machine being also adapted to be Without difiiculty used for all kinds of gut from the smallest to thelargest size.

The cleaning of the gut is effected by means of knives, past which the gut is drawn by a pair of rollers which also presses it out during the passage, while the knives by scraping, free it externally, on both sides simultaneously from adherent dirt and slime, the rollers serving as supports for the knives.

The gut is passed between aconveyer roller and the first knife bearing in the direction of rotation of the roller, and is thereby cleaned on one side, for example the upper most side, whereupon it travels away from the rear over the second knife and from thence between the latter and another transport roller, so that it is cleaned on the other side in the same passage through the machine. From the second knife it travels between two rollers elastically pressed together, which rollers press the gut out flat during its passage. The gut is thus cleaned on both sides externally as Well inwardly by a single passage through the machine which may be operated in any suitable way by hand or mechanically. The conveyer rollers are also ribbed in an improved manner, the ribbing consisting of transverse longitudinal grooves of a certain form and arrangement. Thus, for example the width of these grooves is smaller than the Width of the space lying between them, whereby a plurality of surfaces for the. gut are provided that even the thinnest gut is conveyed with safety. over the entire width of the rollers, but are interrupted and arranged in staggered relatlon, whereby transverse bars are formed which prevent the knives resting on the roller from penetrating the material and thus avoid injury to the gut to be cleaned.

Each of the knives can be independently thrown out of action, so that if necessary the work may be done with only one of them, and for this objectthe second knife is provided with a cutting edge, both on the side at which the gut enters and also on the one at which it leaves the machine. Further the first knife is preferably regulatably connected with the second, in such a way that when it is lifted, for example if a thicker part of the gut is passing through, it is automatically lifted with it, in order to prevent the gut being damaged. Finally the machine with its rollers and knives is mounted to pro ect from its supporting base or bracket, so that it is quite open on one side, whereby it is possible in case of need to withdraw the gut sidewise, which is of value inasmuch as the guts to be handled are frequently more than 30 yards in length, so that, for example in the case of a stoppage, a gut need no longer be passed back through the machine to its entire length, but removed sldewise and re-inserted equally rapidly from the side.

If desired several such cleaning apparatus may be arranged in succession.

This invention will now be more particularly described in connection with one form of construction, taken by way of example, in which two apparatus are arranged in series, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side view of the machine; Fig. 2, an end view and partial section; Fig. 3 is a view of the corrugations or rifling on an enlarged roller; and Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross section of a cleaning apparatus.

Rollers Z) and c are r'evolubly mounted on shafts (Z and e in the frame a of the machine, the rollers being accessible from the side, as shown in Fig. 2. One roller, for example 6, is driven in any suitable way, for example by means of a crank handle 7, and in turn drives the roller 0 by means of gear wheels 9, the shaft 6 of which roller 0 is mounted on a pivoted link 2' pivotally mounted on the bolt it, so that it bears on the other roller 79 and is capable of being lifted away from it.

The rollers 72 and c are ribbed, the ribbing consisting of longitudinal grooves 70 which 'run at right angles to the shafts (Z and c, and

the width of which is lessthan the width of the space lying between them. The grooves is also do not extend over the entire length of the rollers b and 0 but are interrupted and staggered one relative to the other, so that bars Z project between the separate rows of grooves (Fig. 3).

Knives m and n which are removably fixed on holders 0 and 79 serve for cleaning the gut. The knives m and n or rather the holders 0 and p for these members are loosely pivotally arranged on their shafts q and r which are also fixed at one side to the frame a of the machine. The arrangement adopted is such that the knives m and it rest on the rollers b and 0 (Fig. 4t) when the machine is at work. The knife arm 0 has also an arm 8 which carries a regulating screw t which bearson an arm 32 of the knife n, so that when this knife 12 is lifted up, for example when a thickened part of the gut it passes beneath it, the knife m is raised simultaneously with it. The knife m is also provided with a cutting edge on both sides. The two knives may be laid back separately or together as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4.

The gut u, as may be seen in Fig. 2, is first passed between the roller 1) and the knife m, then from the rear over the knife 71 and away over this and then between this knife n and the roller 0 between the two rollers b and c, as indicated by the arrow on the drawing. The knife m thus cleans one side of the gut u, and the knife n its other side, so that when it leaves the machine it is perfectly cleaned.

Preferably, as shown in Fig. 1, two such cleaning machines are arranged in series to operate on the gut in succession which are then operated by a common driving gear, whereby a kind of preliminary cleaning takes place in the first machine.

I declare that what I claim is 1. In a gut cleaning machine, the combination of a pair of rollers between which the gut is adapted to pass, at least one of the rollers being provided with staggered longitudinal grooves; and cleaning means to press the gut against the grooved roller.

2. In a gut cleaning machine, the combi nation of a pair of :operatively connected rollers yieldably pressed by weight the one toward the other, and provided with longitudinal grooves; knives yieldably pressing toward the respective rollers; and an operative connection between the knives.

3. In a gut cleaning machine, the combination of a pair of rollers yieldably pressed the one toward the other and beingoperatively connected at one end, and entirely disconnected at the other end; and cleaners yieldably pressed against the rollers and entirely disconnected from the machine at the side of the machine at which the rollers are disconnected from each other.

l. In a gut cleaning machine, the combination of a frame; a link pivoted thereon; intergeared upper and lower rollers journaled respectively on said link and frame and provided with disconnected sets of longitudinal grooves; upper and lower holders pivoted to said frame; and knives on the respective holders and adapted to be pressed thereby toward the respective rollers. 1

5. In a gut cleaning machine. the combination of a pair of rollers yieldably pressed one toward the other; knives yieldably pressing toward the respective rollers; and an operative connection between theknives.

6. In a gut cleaning machine, the combination of a pair of rollers yieldably pressed one toward the other; knives yieldably pressing toward the respective rollers; and an adjustable connection between the knives.

7. In a gut cleaning machine. the combination of a pair of rollers yieldably pressed one toward the other; knives yieldably pressing toward the respective rollers; a holder for each knife; a set screw adjustable in one holder and bearing on the other holder.

8. In a gut cleaning macl1ine, a pair of rollers between which gut may pass; a knife pressing toward one of the rollers, the roller toward which the knife presses being provided with grooves and means for preventing the knife to pass into the grooves.
