BAIL-JOINT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 23, 1915.
Application filed July 22, 1914. Serial No. 852,435.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, STEVE JAMBOR, a sub ject of the King of Hungary, residing at South Bethlehem, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Joints, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to rail joints and has for its object to provide a joint of such class, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, for connecting the opposing ends of a pair of track rails together, without the employment of nuts and bolts, at the same time providing for the expansion and contraction of the track rails due to climatic influences. V l
Further objects of the invention are to provide a rail joint which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable and readily positioned, eiiicient in its use and inexpensive.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of a novel con struction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications. can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views :Figure 1 is an elevation illustrating a rail joint in accordance with this invention, one of the track rails being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the coupling member of the joint, Figs. 3 and 4 are respectively cross sect onal views of the coupling member, and Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view through a track rail and a coupling member.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 6 and 7 denote a pair of track rails and each of which is provided with a tread 8. web 9 and base 10. interposed between the opposing ends of the track rails 6 and 7 is a coupling member consisting of a body portion 11 having its top of the same contour as Gopies or this patent may be obtained for the upper face of the tread 8, and the said body portion 11 has projecting from each side thereof a pair of spaced extensions and the extensions of each pair are indicated at 12 and 13. The extensions 12 and 13 are of less height than the height of the body portion 11 and are adapted to extend under the tread 8 of the track rails, upon the bases 10 of the track rails and at opposite sides of the webs 9 of the track rails. The track rails 6 and 7 are adapted to be positioned against the sides of the body portion 11 whereby the extensions 12 and 13 will be positioned in a manner as stated.
The chair plate 14: is provided with lateral wings 15 having openings 16 for the passage of holdfast devices to secure the chair plate to the upper face of the tie. The chair plate 14 is also formed with vertically disposed tongues 17, which engage in grooves 18 formed in the outerfaces of the extensions 12 and 13 and which prevent longitudinal movement, as well as lateral movement of the coupling member.
What I claim is A rail joint comprising a connecting memher having a body portion formed with its upper face flush with the treads of a pair of track rails which are adapted to abut against each side thereof, oppositely disposed spaced extensions adapted to engage under the treads of the track rails and further engage the webs and bases thereof, the outer sides of said extensions being cut vertically from the bottom portion at each end to form recesses. a chair plate supporting said body portion and provided with vertically disposed tongues at the ends thereof adapted for projection into the recesses in said extensions to prevent lateral and longitudinal movement of said connecting member, and wings projecting from said chair plate between said tongues and being provided with openings for the passage of hold fast devices to secure the chair plate to the tie.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signa ture in the presence of two witnesses.
STEVE JAMBOR.
